I want to tell a little about Mongolian musk.
Mongolian musk deer lives in the North-Western part of Mongolia (part of the Altai mountains), slightly captures the border of China and goes North to the Russian Republic of Tuva.
This picture shows the approximate habitat of the Mongolian musk deer:

The color of musk is dark brown, the smell of musk is calmer and softer than Siberian.
Much different from the exterior of the pods. They are usually without hair or nearly no hair. A big plus of the pods that they have thin skin and as a percentage of the musk is much more than skin.

Well, what fragrance can be more mesmerising and intoxicating than Mongolian Musk!

The day I had a maiden encounter with Mongolian Musk grain, I have forgotten where I kept Siberian musk in the cupboard.

Great piece of education dear brother Ninjarobb...very interesting indeed....so if I were to distinguish between Siberian and mangolian ....what are the 2 or 3 most prominent differences...as I am a layman and I used to think since both the regions ( Siberian & mangolia) are pretty close ....which supposedly means the same vegetation and weather.....so in my mind I thought it would be pretty much similar as compared to a Nepalese or a Tibetian musk which is diff. And pretty far off....but I will be eager to know your impressions....about the difference between mangolian & Siberian !

Received my pod from NinjaRob a few days ago and cannot stop sniffing the container i put the grains in,this Mongolian musk is amazing.Compared to my Siberian grains,the Mongolian seems significantly more herbal.

Just got mine as well. Smells quite musky. Like the Siberian, there is this strange magic-marker scent... this seems weird to me - it doesn’t smell natural or animalic but more like a solvent or chemical. I have very little experience with musk - is this typical? Other samples I have smelled had some ammonia notes but that’s totally different. I’m not saying the musk has chemicals in it (I wouldn’t know) I am just wondering because I have never heard this adjective used with musk. Maybe it’s just my senses being overwhelmed by the concentrated scent...

The Mongolian Musk I have were sourced from some other vendor. After sniffing the grains, I decided not to acquire Siberian and Nepalese anymore. The grains were semi wet, the scent had no hint of amonia at all, and the quality of scent was outstanding.

Its being different from Siberian and any other musk is too obvious. Vibrant than Siberian all the way. Though Siberian touch is there, but it transcends Siberian.

Both the Mongolian and Siberian had a weird magic marker smell in the bottle. Not overwhelmingly strong, but zero ammonia spite of the grains being moist. The only other sample of moist musk I have smelled had obvious ammonia notes (I read somewhere this is a sign it wasn’t dried properly).

I’m not saying this marker smell is a sign of anything bad, but it doesn’t match my experience or expectations, and it really does not smell like a natural smell, and I don’t know enough about this material to know if this is normal or not!

When made into a tincture, the smell of magic marker fades away and overall smell resembles closely that of other specimens I have seen.

I am not casting any shade in ninja rob’s direction - this is all about my ignorance and lack of experience. I just need perspective.

I just received my second batch of Siberian from ninjarobb , first batch is in some Mysore for 2 months and just starting to develop a nice scent. This is my first experience with musk beside some from a vendor in Singapore. I am waiting on Mongolian from ninjarobb. Have been thinking of an Oud maceration, anyone have any advice on the oud I should use? Cannabis EO maceration anyone?

@Edward jay Bullock I have a couple on the go with EO TWR & TW 95. Just musk & oud, been a few months...would highly recommend TWR, although TW95 smells good too, the TWR & musk is even better.

I was going to try a Malaysian oil from Oudimentary that I have or maybe create a blend of different ouds in musk , I have some Mutahid from Habz’s that is really amazing and is one of the best deals that some people will pass over because of how cheap it is but Wow it’s real deep.

I got my order the other day also Thanks NinjaRobb…. the Siberian is very strong in smell... but the Mongolian is a sweet powdery im guessing probably how its been dried … I cant stop smelling it I got another one not long ago with vanilla absolute mixed it smells like a heavenly chocolate … very addictive smell I couldn't stop smelling my hand for about 3 hours …. it looked very funny outside the box...

I have Ninja’s Mongolian and have no issue with the scent or anything else.

I have experience with Kashmiri, Siberian, Mongolian and Tibetan. Both grains and oil.

The pictures are 5ml vials, packed to the top with a tiny amount of oil to create a musk paste. The vials are Wheaton and super expensive too. I wouldn’t risk putting in anything but genuine musk in such costly experiments.

I have found Mongolian to be a very pleasant smell. It’s not weaker than Siberian for me. Infact there is far more depth to Mongolian. Siberian to me smells of urine and ammonia.

Mongolian is what I would describe as a scent which people from the subcontinent would prefer. Whereas Siberian I’ll say is more European. When mixing heavy scented oils it’s always Mongolian for me otherwise the scent over powers the musk.

There is an Arabian couplet which I can’t recall but it loosely translates to, musk in the pod is easy to detect but when the pod is opened the scent goes very quickly. So basically what I’m saying is don’t assume because it’s super strong in grain form the same will happen in oil.

I think depth is in grains of all musk deer grains, be that Siberian, Mongolian and Kashmiri. But all have different impact and result when used in some oil to macerate. As I am inclined towards Kashmiri musk, but I found no less superb the other ones too. But the most important thing in my opinion is the quality of grains. And when macerated, the quality of oil cannot be neglected.

Amonia or urine is in all wet musk grains. This is not limited to Siberian. I think this is wet musk chemistry.

So far as Mongolian musk goes, it shares certain nuances with Siberian, but the scent is more potent. Really beautiful. What are the reasons of their being having shared notes is not important for me. But Kashmiri and Tibetan both have their own scent kingdoms and domains. Both are rare and rare indeed as well.

When I smell grains, I say Kashmiri is supreme. When I smell some maceration, I am inclined towards Tibetan. But in attar, Siberian and Mongolian and Kashmiri they create unique effects.

The smell you mentioned is surely felt in some maceration if either the sandal is having copper scent or grains are of low quality. I think it is a fact that grains or pods have different grades. So, nothing can be neglected.

Last year I got a pod and when opened, it was stinky Kashmiri. Yes, it does happen. The way Oud has different grades, so has musk.

Thanks to some musk vendors who brought this rare product to us. Otherwise, at least Siberian and Anuha musk would remain unknown to me.
