Hey Ouddict's i was just wondering how long have people been into Oud for? When did the journey start? feel free to vote away. If people want to share via a message after voting this is fine it would be nice to see who's old school and who's new school or who's in the middle :p PS for me its been 5 years.

Since 1990 when an Old Arab Guy swiped some mystical Attar that smelled like a babies dirty diaper - Heavy Animal Scent , I almost vomited in the masjid , 40 Minutes later the Cow Poop fades away and the journey Began , But still a Novice at that time and gradually made my nose use to the scent , when you are young you like the sweet Smells , I gave my Son some and He freaks Out " Yucky ,Smells bad' that's a kid for you , hence takes time and I need another 300 years to learn , Life is Short and Share the Oud with friends and family :)

I first heard about oud (about eight or nine years ago) from a friend who had spent some time in Yemen. He and his family were over for supper, and I was talking about my love for Sandalwood. He said something like, "Have you ever heard of oud?", and then proceeded to share his experience of having attending a wedding where swipes of oil were given to the guests. I had no idea what he was talking about, but I was intrigued! I ordered a sample from an essential oil company, and the scent turned my stomach (I still have that little sample vial, and it really was a nasty specimen, imo!). After that, I got some agarwood incense that was pretty great, but I assumed all oud oil was like that first sample I tried, and therefore thought it wasn't for me! Fast forward to 2011, and I was on BN and started hearing about oud again. I ordered a sample of Agarwood CO2 from Eden Botanicals, and though I found it fascinating, I knew it wasn't quite what everyone was raving about. I started looking around on the internet and came across Oriscent (Ensar), and I was shocked at the prices. 400 dollars for a tiny bottle of scent!? And, at the time, Ensar wasn't even offering single samples. I ended up contacting AgarAura, and Taha was kind enough to send me three samples for the price of one. And I have been hooked every since!

Well, I didn't know if I should have made my answer 1 year or 9 years. I've known Oud since my childhood and have used it all throughout my life. ASAQ and Ajmal mainly with a few other small Arab Oud houses. But I only came in contact with Oud as I know it today around a year ago. I thought all Oud was skanky and barnyard. :D

Fast forward to my third Oud oil purchased from Ensar Oud. Enter Oud Yusuf. When I first got it I thought I had been ripped off because it didn't smell dark (silly me). I even recall letting my friends smell Oud Yusuf and Oud Mostafa no. 5 They said Mostafa no. 5 is real, Yusuf is fake (silly them).

After reading some more online, I learned that there were different kinds of Ouds with completely different scent profiles. Later on, I bought an Oud oil from Agar Aura called Beccariana. I remember when I first let a close friend of mine smell it, his words were "I don't know what that is..but it's definitely not Oud" and I said "Yes it is! I swear it is!" to which his reply was "oh yeah? then why does it smell so bright?" Grrrrr

So my Oud journey technically started 9+ years ago... but this chapter of my journey only started a year ago with a bottle of Aroha Kyaku and a bottle of Oud Yusuf. I might not have as much money as I used to....but guess what? Never been happier! :D

Seems we have more Oud veterans here its great to hear about people journeys. @Alkhadra when i went to Makkah last year i took a few ouds with me, i went to loads of shops and swiped the guys behind the counter, many of them where shocked that it was oud. Maybe its because they aren't custom to oud's which smell non barnyard or dark as you said. Many of them did not know oud can be sourced from many places not just India and Cambodia.

Me: 1 year, 5 months, 2 weeks, 1 day, 4 hours, 42 minutes, 21 seconds into my Life with Oud!

Okay, the days/hours/minutes/seconds are invented, but I might as well remember the exact time because my first sniff of pure oud oil was so striking and memorable. It was a sample of Encens d'Angkor, purchased used on Basenotes October 2015, for what seemed the exhorbitant price of $37/0.25gr. One sniff and I was converted. Goodbye all my ordinary alcohol fragrances, goodbye all my Amouage attars (which I credit as my "gateway" to oud and which til then I never thought I would give up), goodbye reasonable spending habits, hello forever my dear friend Oud.

I had tried hindi oud oil first from a reputed mid Eastern house. And my initial thought was that if this is oud I will have nothing to do with it. Later on I bought an oil from Ensar ( Khao Kala) and got hooked. That was 2014.

Over 10 for me. But unlike everyone else, my oud oil love is not as profound, though I still enjoy the hell out of it. I love the wood, and all aromatics including sandalwood and unrelated conifer-like scents which tend to be my preference. I adore frankincense too. For me, the wood is preferable. Agarwood is amazing. If given the choice, I would fumigate the wood over wearing a swipe any day. Also, to everyone that posts regularly, I love your posts, but clicking "like" becomes onerous quickly.
