The shopkeeper in Srinagar hesitated before showing me the saffron.

Tourists drifted through the old Kashmiri city's open-air market while he watched from behind shelves overflowing with walnuts, spices and dried fruit. When I asked for Kashmiri saffron, he glanced towards the entrance before reaching beneath the counter for a small steel container wrapped in cloth..............
