Sooo I made this thread to sum up all kind of heaters and burners available chinese or japanese to have an overview or reference thread for anyone looking for a new heater (I didnt include subitisms, these are easier to get from some vendors or selfmade).

1. KODUTO: Kohgen Shoyeido Grandawood Japan incense
PROS: Portable/battery (good for travel), cheap, heating part is replacable if it breaks, adjustable temp.
CONS: Prices vary (Japan obviously cheaper) (more than double the price at Grandawood), Turns off after 3min, has a plastic smell, you need round micas

2. Nippon Kodo SIZURO: Kohgen Nippon Kodo
PROS: Portable, mid-price range, chargeable
CONS: adjust temperature in 5 steps(no precise control), nowhere to buy (sold out), needs round mica plates, temp. range 190-250c
can be used for hour and half, 30minX 3 times (safety off kick in once it reach 30min of continues use)

3. KODACHI: Shoyeido Japanese website
PROS: Portable, temp. control
CONS: Needs power supply

4. HIINA/Hi-ina: Shoyeido Grandawood Kohgen
PROS: Portable, cheapest?
CONS: Needs coal, no temp. control

5. Kangiiten × YouYuan Heater: Kangiiten
PROS: Ceramic surface, Kit includes shin kyara, good temp. control, amazing price especially because you can order some sandalwood or other shin kyara colors from the same website for small money and you have all at one place.
CONS: Not portable/handy, Not for travel
Aliexpress heater: similar design for less money

6. Kangiiten Portable Heater: Kangiiten
PROS: Portable (good for travel or car), cheap, incl. some shin kyara, chargeable with usb
CONS: Bad temp. control, no accessories (tweezer, metal tray etc.)

7. YuLanXiang Magnolia heater: Aliexpress short version Aliexpress long version
PROS: Portable/handy, excellent temp. control, good LED display position, usb charger, no mica needed
CONS: Expensive

8. QiJiaXin heater: Aliexpress
PROS: Portable/handy, excellent temp. control, no mica neede
CONS: Expensive, Temp. LED is on the bottom, No usb charger

9. Aluminum heater: Aliexpress
PROS: Portable/handy, temp. control?, no mica needed, good LED display position
CONS:

Anyways, would the YouYuan still be one of the better ones? Are there any new Japanese heaters worth checking out? At the moment I am leaning towards the YouYuan, it just seems quite pricey.

I have same one since long long time and its still working greatly.
Anyway if you want solid Material and chip get the Qixianjin heater.

I've not needed to buy one separately from the unit. Maybe those types of YouYuan all use the same but I wouldn't assume anything when playing around with power cables and electricity. Do you have one of those heaters? You could send NineRegions a message and see if he will sell you a seperate cable? I'm sure he would have some lying around. I'd start there.

Thankfully they give the volts 12.8v and the plug is likely center positive. Looks smaller than 5.5mm the most common size, but you could measure barrel size and source one readily locally. I have an electronics recycle place in my city, with 100s of adapters for $1-2 each, or thrift store if you need one today. 500mah-1a is prob all it needs, and you can overshoot safely, but match volts

Or Amazon once you know size of barrel (they sell adapters with swappable tips, and even with swappable voltage)

I think many use a special device for the expensive/rare kyara, because it is often appreciated up close and very small quantities at low temperature and the typical subitism is not convenient for that. if you are talking about where to start with a plantation kinam wood, I would say give very low temperatures a try first and then gradually increase with time. My device doesn't have a temperature read out so I can't give you specifics but the younger plantation material in particular tends to smell better at low to medium temperatures than medium to high.

I suggest a relatively thin flat piece with a high surface area, start at the lowest temperature where you can perceive anything at all, see how that smells, then gradually shift the temperature upwards in small steps, some woods will release some really rich resinous notes once you pass a certain threshold. In my experience plantation kinam starts smelling unpleasant very quickly however if it's heated at very high temperature - the aroma is mostly coming from oil and it boils off all at once and then all you're smelling is burning wood fibers after that. truly you may find that each wood has its own unique sweet spot

Adding to this thread as I just purchased a kinam style wood chip heater from Incensoria, which is based in China. The pictures look promising and they have a pretty extensive catalogue of interesting looking heaters. Will update when it arrives.

Nice! The Chinese market is now flooding online stores with these heaters which is finally bringing some of the prices down. When they were first around they could go for insanely high prices. Some still do command this high price. The YouYuan I bought roughly 3yrs ago still sits at around $400. Really don't know why but it hasn't failed me once during this time and the battery is still great so I'm not complaining about it at all.

In case anyone else needs one, I was able to get the seller to package just the charger for me.
