Be en,I pour off the majority of the now opaque hydrogen peroxide and then filter the rest. My favorite material for straining tinctures is very finely woven, sheer, windoe curtain material which you can often find at the thrift store. Some people use coffee filters, but this can take a long time, as the fine particles tend to clog the filter. Then I spread the moist shells on a ceramic plate or tile and let them air dry.
I use to think that the matter that floated to the top of the liquid was "bad" stuff. The last time I did the process, I skimmed off the floating matter, washed it in water and let it dry on a seperate plate. It smelled fine and felt gritty. I believe it was super fine particles of shell that floated on the hydrogen peroxide. So you might want to consider saving it.
I put my oz of opercula shards into a jam jar on July 1 in the evening. It foamed. Then this afternoon I poured the jar's contents onto a coffee filter sitting on top of an espresso machine tray (the ones that sit underneath the espresso nozzle to catch excess coffee).
It worked fine. There was alittle bit of tiny seashell material left on top of the filter.
Since I didn't skim the foam or pour off the liquid, but rather filtered it through the coffee filter, I can tell you that the foam didn't consist of serious solid material. All of the material that laid on top of the coffee filter after I filtered it was just the normal pebble sized tiny opercula shards.
Before pouring the material, I took a deep sniff of the jar out of curiosity. It was not as strongly smelling as seafood shellfish (oysters, clams), but was like beach sand or ocean saltwater. Right afterwards I got a headache that basically lasted a half hour. It went from the top of the nose to the front of my brain, which I take to be from the toxins that the hydrogen peroxide is trying to clean out. That's the kind of substance that would be in the foam and the liquid that you try to get rid of.
Next time I want to try your method: skim off the foam, then pour off the liquid and filter the rest.
