Morning burn Khanh Hoa wild char
[Ouddict.com] Burn of the Day

Today...I am going to gently burn the wild white kinam I recently got from @language scent
It was a very tiny piece but enough to get the idea about Kinam wood.....
I started with a setting of 10v on my sub and my nose was pretty close to detect any scent....so I went up to 14v and the piece gave of a very cool, fruity note.
As it is a small piece...I am going to ramp up to 20v for a final burn. Amazing, even when it began to smoke it gave a most beautiful other worldly scent...Smells like peach or some other fruit.....really lovely experience for my first kinam burn.......

it was like .02g i think. (what i use for small sessions) on a good kinam heater would have been a lot more as a kodo. subitism on such a small piece with such a big heating surface never worked for me to get the most out of it. but i am glad it still gave you something that you liked!

Just not contaminated by other scent I suspect (also with a low temp setting). They also mentioned a small heated surface to match the small pieces of wood, which makes sense.

I recommend the Shoyeido Kodachi. The ceramic heating element and the casing do not give scent. I don’t use the metal lid or metal heating tray that’s included, just a mica sheet.

The battery powered Shoyeido Kodutu isn’t very practical, less burn time, extremely small heating area, and lack of temperature control.

I just ordered a back-up Kodachi from Kohgen through Mr. Watarai, just $280 total with EMS. I asked him to remove the Japan local tax, ship EMS and bill my Paypal.
(¥33,000-3000+5,300[shipping]=¥35,300)
Yen to Dollar is great right now, through Paypal it is currently ¥127 for $1.
Email of Mr. Watarai is

If anyone wants to make a big purchase at Kohgen, nows the time while the Yen is weak, but unfortunately they don’t ship agarwood and kyara overseas, nor Seijudo’s Kyara Enju.

Just tell Mr. Watarai that you don’t want to use the Worldshopping third party, and that you prefer EMS, and the removal of the Japan Local Tax (which is built in to their prices).

I don't understand how?
Ultimately, shouldn't only the evenness of heat and the temperature matter? And I feel that subitism heater achieves that quite well.

Subitism is great for agarwood but not for kodo. The cupping of one hand over a subitism lol just doesn’t work. Also you can not do specific heating with 1+or- temp control. Kinam heating is not a simple task it takes time to master it. In order to enjoy to the fullest one has to discover the sweet spot temp and this also changes as different stages of the wood come about in time. Big difference sub vs that shoyeido or the magnolia. It needs patience and experimentation to unlock the kinam s to their fullest potential.

have to agree, not even for Kinam but for any wood i get over $150/g I use the Shoyeido or I'm waiting on My YuLanXiang which offers better control. The sub, and I have RPP's is awesome but too aggressive even for delicate wood, in my opinion, I'm also learning on the go here.

Good point, I always try to fully explore every agarwood I get. I have to establish the wood’s potential for Mon Koh, for an extended burn of a particular phase, and for room fumigation. The two heaters you mentioned is where to start, and if needed, progress to the Subitism.

I agree. I will venture a guess just for the heck of it. Maybe with a larger element, you are smelling a whole lot of heated surface area of mica, whereas what the person in question really wants to be smelling is just the scent of the heated wood?

Also you can not do specific heating with 1+or- temp control.
Actually with the right subitism you can do better than that! 🙂

I have two homemade subitisms that can be passed around. Not literary cups, but that doesn’t cause a problem for me at least. They are heavy stone blocks on long flexible leads. My homemade subitisms are very crude, not elegant, and no doubt some of the skilled artisans here could come up with an aesthetically improved equivalent, but it is very utilitarian and on that level has no issues. If you have the interest I suggest maybe making your own heater - get a lab power supply and make your own heating elements because you can make them of any size and it just takes a few moments to make one.

Another option which I got long ago is the battery powered shoyeido kodotu (sp.?) heater but it is more of a novelty for portability than a go-to burner. has a nice small heating area but the plastic is annoying. It has been most useful for introducing friends to the agarwood addiction, as on a few occasions I have lent it out with fresh batteries and a small envelope of chip samples. 🙂

That's the one I picked up first, about $165 delivered, works great for what it is, a very small, portable unit with limited output and temp control, not to say it isn't functional because it is. It's great to sample a tiny sliver of something good. Can fit in a jacket pocket and you can take it with you about anywhere you want.
