Aroma Sublime - Kusunoki Japanese Camphor oil

Added some to my heater, very thin so I'm glad I had the curved plate to keep it contained. Fennel notes quite apparent, coolness blossoms the longer it's been in the air, and overall it's really sweet, which alongside the other aspects makes it a perfect oil to vaporize. A calm sweet coolness to start off the week!
I’ve actually never heated pure Camphor as incense! Considering how ancient it is & the importance in Islamic tradition, I’m curious & feel as though I’m missing out on something exceptional.
Tbh I wouldn’t even know where to start sourcing a high grade material. Any suggestions would be great.

In my head I picture it being a slightly spicy, fresh, heavenly & purifying mint aroma.

It's a delightful scent, the only camphor I've been exposed to in the past has been the Dryobalanops aromatica, while this is Camphora officinarum. The former smells nice but quite piercing, not sweet or really anything other than full blown minty-ness. This however has a fennel laced sweetness to it which makes it feel more rounded, a tad bit like similar to the green fruitiness which is found in some modern (emerald like) Malays.

I got mine from here, and it's an essential oil, not the crystals. I do like how it was produced, from the leaves and branches of an old tree, sustainability always adds extra points to an oil.

Edit: I realized a cardamom note plays a pretty central role in this oil as well. It just occurred to me what this camphor is reminding me of, standing next to someone chewing paan masala, not exactly but close to that ball park of aroma.

Tarakan Bead Scrap wood from Tea Guru.

This is a particularly complex wood. Depending on piece, and even the same piece that has been cut, it can differ in scent, it usually has this wet, monsoon, jungle note, that progresses into a sweet, fruity note, some hints of florals in there sometimes too but cant be 100% as it is fleeting and hard to describe. I need more time with this and the 5g I have is just not enough to finally get it down. @Guru_AromatiX I will be getting more 😀

Shoyeido Matsu Square

I kept the heater from getting too hot and experienced creaminess from the chip.

I should do more temperature control with all my different oudhs.
It has been interesting hearing your accounts of the different notes that you get when burning different shoyeido chips from the same package. One thing I noticed about the baieido woods is they were very consistent. In the handful that I have ordered, there has been only a single profile in the batch.

I don’t know how representative my experience was, but it seems that Baieido was selecting for aroma over consistency in resination, whereas shoyeido perhaps is grading more by density or appearance.

Does this hold true in your experience in general?

I had only one pack of Baieido Ogurayama and there was variation of profiles.
As for Shoyeido I’ve purchased around forty 5 gram packs over a span of 5 years and yet there were variations within most packs.
I got fifty 1 gram packs of Shoyeido’s mini agarwood chips for their Kodutu battery operated heater, those have been the most consistent, but still, a few pieces with variation.

Some Maroke wood I got from www.pureoudh.com (I also got 4 other woods, including one of my favourites from him, Vietnam Red Soil and White Diamond Frankincense), although I don't think this particular Maroke he has is up on the site, yet anyway. It was very complex, but not confusing like some other woods, looking at you Tarakan. It is wild wood. Each piece and even each pieces I broke off of bigger pieces had differing nuances and almost different profiles, but not quite, just different nuances and some different notes from top to bottom. The notes I was getting overall in the burn that was around 40-50 mins long on my coal with a mica plate were these. Wet, rainforest, dirty jungle notes, with notes of bitter sweetness, dark fruitiness and swamp. I was also getting, wet, rainforest with clean jungle water notes, but with mud in the mix, then as the wood bubbled away at a nice pace it pieces were going in directions of either a nice rainforest fruity note, or somewhat floral, or both, nice sweet nots with some cream if I left the last few wisps of smoke come off when it was hanging on for dear life. Quite earthy you would imagine as well. Now those notes are out of the way, I was also getting some tobacco notes, here and there which was quite lovely, not like cigarettes (those are awful smelling), more like mid to high end cigars (I used to smoke cigars nearly every week, big ones, like Cubans for example, but that was only a one time thing, the other cigars I smoked where from places I cant remember as it was like 2+ years ago, but they were also quite expensive at around £15-18 for 1, and the Cuban around £25-30 per 1 cigar, so I know how they smell). Overall, I enjoyed my first burn tonight. Let's see if I burn some other wood tonight, or in the mood to.

Here is a pic of the Maroke chips: If anyone can't read the scale screen like me because of my monitor settings and nvidia screen settings it is just over 3g

Maunamoku Nha Trang Char

These chips are now part of my
“first round group” when it comes to rotation for daily heating.
I call them the Daily Dozen😁
Not to say I heat a dozen daily, but among my daily sessions, they will definitely include some of the Daily Dozen.

The difficult part was breaking the beautiful chips into smaller pieces to fit inside the bottle😟, I had to endure such agony with my Hainan char also.
