I either char the wood or don't smell anything. I've posted pictures before of some of the woods I have, and was assured they should smoulder, but somehow I just can't get it right, especially with chunks. People have told me to warm up the wood first, then slowly increase the volts, etc....and yet I get nothing. I wish I could figure it out.
I definitely learned never use chunks. The wood burns too unevenly and leads to scorching/burnt scent like firewood.
Saying all that, I have often burned wood and got nothing from it as well, perhaps it's just a piece that has no oil. It's possible.

This oil is incredible, and so is the wood that came with it. I heated a tiny amount of wood on the kioka and applied a drop of oil and it's just sublime. Going back and forth from the kioka to my wrist was mesmerizing and seemingly opened up facets of aroma I couldn't see in each on their own.

The oil opens like an aromatic firework. Complex is an understatement. This oil needs to be studied to give a proper description, and I couldn't help but apply it while I still had preoccupations of the day distracting me. But green, bittersweet, medicinal, on a base of thick sinensis resin came to mind.

Kinamic also came to mind from the wood and the oil.

I'm 3 hours into it now, and the house is finally quiet. It's dried down into a beautiful sinensis resin, incense, and vanillic spices.
17 hours and a full nights sleep later this still has life left in it. Like the quiet echoes left behind from a long burned out Hainan incense stick.
