Noob question. Why does everyone macerate musk in sandalwood? Is there anything else you can macerate in or does it smell better with sandalwood?

Good question. The traditional way to macerate musk is in Cambodi oudh (@Al Shareef Oudh recommends) and I did this about two years back in a beautiful Cambodi Oudh from Oudimentary and it is so much lively in the bottle.
So simple answer is anything can really go as I have macerated very small amounts in other oils.
Sandalwood on the whole is cheaper then using Oudh but other then that...go for your own creativity @AbuNader

Musk + Oudh and the preferred Oudh is Malaysian Oudh.

Yeah so much for my recall.....😅
😅
It was Malaysian I meant..

My own experience is that a minimum of one year in Malaysian Oudh produces a truly wonderful scent....go for it if you can.
I kinda loved it even after a month. But yeah more than a year is :handok:

Because of this thread I had to revisit my
Oud Musk Ambergris blend from June 2018
It’s mainly HOM Malay Encens with IO Kejalasan & Kushiara, Agar Aura Bois Mielluse & Inderapura Encens, Kashmiri & Siberian Musk grains filling up one third of the bottle, and Ambergris.

I don’t smell the Ambergris, but I get a lot of Musk and Oud.

It is now a precious one-of-a-kind.

If anyone is so inclined, make a few musks blends now to stash away for years to come, and let the musk work it’s magic, then it will be something special.

Question regarding splitting open a musk pod.
Should you pick out the membranes and tissue from the grains before tincturing or macerating? Or are you supposed to dump everything inside the bottle besides the outer shell.

I have always spent plenty of time cleaning the pod out first and foremost.
I separate as much grain from everything else......hair, membrane, skin and the pod itself.
I attempt to clean the grains of as many "Impurities" before using for a maceration project. The rest I lump together and put in alcohol to extract every bit out of it.

After cleaning the musk grains from the rest of the stuff, I ended up having a small piece of a thick skin. It was thicker than regular tissues mixed with the grains. I decided to cut it with scissors and macerate into jojoba oil. Now it has been a month and the color already turned dark yellow(almost light brown). My plan is to mix it with some white florals after 6-8 months, will see whats gonna happen.
