We don’t see much Wild Thai - picked clean long before even Cambodia or Vietnam. Somebody liked this region long before any of us even came to the game.

Not sure if the Gulf or the Asian market picked them clean - but I’m leaning towards Japan and Taiwan. Thai Crassna woods, in my opinion, smell more similar to Vietnamese Crassnas than do Cambodis.

My last trip to Japan, I found only 2 pieces of Thai wood, one piece about the size of a finger, and the other about the size of a hand. Asking astronomical prices for what we here would likely call mid grade wood. The scent was stellar - but not the most resin dense (one of the big differences in how Japan market evaluates value (scent quality first) vs the Arab market (resin density first)).

Below here is a mountain batch of Wild Khao Yai. Great, thick, resin dense stuff. Smells like dessert 🍨 Sweet Tamarind, Vanilla Cream and Spice.

IDK if its me but it seems like a lot more Hainan wood has been popping up everywhere nowadays.
I think there is a lot a cultivated “char” on the market and other nice looking cultivated Hainan, the good stuff is out there being hoarded and does slowly reach the market but it’s very expensive.
If you paid $5-30 a gram for your Hainan it’s probably cultivated wood

to be honest, market never run dry of it unlike other woods which is harder to acquire "Vintage Koh Kong, Vintage Hindi especially assam, certain laos, golden triangle, HK, vintage thai, some vintage Viet nha trang and top soil pieces"
best thai pieces i seen was with japanese, seen really amazing chunks for reasonable prices.
also to mention not all cultivated hainan cheap, i was shown stuff grams for 100$-140$ and even some sell it wild
some of pieces look like cultivated trat.
we have some here "char/batou" pieces sell for 50$-70$ for tola.

I have that it's actually Gonystylus and has value my friend 😉

I also have sample of Aetoxylon and you'd be scared how it looks EXACTLY the same as some sinking woods.

I have some also but i am not sure it is really it, looks like it, I got it from japan it was called "yellow rika" it is very very oily and hard sinking wood and the top notes are gorgeous sweet and flowery but towards the middle and the end tho it gets very funky and bitter it could turn off many people but honestly I like it. It stands no chance when we are seriously speaking tho. It is abundant and cheap IF IT IS THE SAME as the aetoxylon.

If I recall that's how Aetox smells, not bad, just not Oudh. Gonystylus is really weird, the stuff like in that pic, I have like 200g or so sent with export paperwork. It melts like butter, like it's all just resin, the carcass similar. Both these woods are in the Aquilaria family too.

yea nothing like oud but honestly the top top notes like the first minute or so has very pretty flowery notes before the sour bitter funk starts. I think this would be a very nice thing to distill and remove the top notes to add to another base!
