i agree 100% sandalwood is a challenge for sure. I’ve only had satisfactory results with low temperature subitism heating but that is mild and slow release. Never found a pleasant way to “fumigate” with sandalwood
i have a lot of experience heating the extract, but this oil is just insane on the heater man, the most amazing sandalwood product to heat hands down! I have even heated distilled sandalwood oil and this is many levels above. The waxy resin left over has an extremely sweet smell while the oil is pure spicy woody bliss! I am about to buy 200-300grams of shoyeido sandalwood one of these weeks and do it all like this. The idea of having a bunch of this oil just tickles my heart lol

It is interesting observing the aging / maturation of old Australian sandalwood oil. Been revisiting the “high grade” oil from WLA that is now about 15 years old. One bottle I have is topped off and unopened, the other is just down to the last couple of ml in a 1 oz bottle.

It has picked up quite a few of the nuances of old santalum album while still 100% having the Aussie signature scent. There is a note in old sandalwood that is vaguely like aged atlas cedar. At one point in my past I was suspicious that old atlas cedar or cedar fractions were adulterants in some of my oils but I see now that this is just something that develops with age.

I’d recommend getting some high quality wild distilled Aussie sandalwood stashing it away for a while because these oils becomes great with time.

I have a couple different sandalwoods from Australia, one has a purple note in it similar to the shoyeido. The other is cultivated and it is nothing special but the extract is extremely sweet i mean sweet overload on the heater you can smell the sweetness. It is crazy how such a spicy wood has all the spice in the oil but all the sweetness in the wax-resins

[Ouddict.com] Sandalwood oil of the day

This is from about 10 years ago more or less. Very nice classic warm woody sandalwood oil. A gentle sweetness pervades the top notes, similar to but different from good Tamil Nadu oil. My Tamil Nadu oils show hints of something more or less like a sweet maple syrup note, yes with an animalic or musky aspect to it; the sweetness in the mysore oil is as intense and likewise a little “confectionary” but it does not bring maple or anything specific to mind other than sandalwood.

I’m not sure how this particular batch of KSDL mysore oil relates to the true classic mysore oil from the wild harvest days. I feel like there was this strong, resonant warm “fuzz” to sandalwood back in the 80s that I haven’t smelled in a while, but it might just have been that my nose was more sensitive when I was younger.

Bro I can only imagine what oil would come out of that shoyeido sandalwood. I have tried sandalwood from so many vendors and famous houses in japan and from auctions, but this shoyeido wood is dark red and smells like the most beautiful sandalwood i have ever smelled. it is very very purple for some reason literally smells like crape candy sandalwood and it smells much much better than it sounds. However, my girl smells zero candy grape in it 🤷‍♂️

I really wish someone would buy a bunch of shoyeido sandalwood and distill it. it like 11$ for 10grams. For sure they have the highest grade in the world available for sale. I have tried "Vintage" mysore woods looking orange-pink-brown, they have nothing on this.

I have enjoyed the shoyeido sandalwood and other woods I have sampled. I also like their signature herb/spice/whatever it is that ties a fair number of their incenses together.

I have so little experience with other incense manufacturers besides baieido so I can’t really comment.

My top shelf sandalwood are 6-7” diameter heartwood slices I bought from Yamada Matsu in 2001. Such juicy sandalwood. I have the slices sealed in a mason jar, open it a couple times a year at most - it is painful to use up.

Also, where are you getting the shoyeido at $11 for 10 g? Would like to get some especially at that price. I see it for about 3x that price at shoyeido USA.

Nice to see people posting in here again! I lost most of January to the flu. The worst was when I lost my sense of smell for a number of days. Definitely freaked me out! Thankfully its mostly back. I've been trying to train my nose by smelling all of my essential oils everyday.

The first oil I wore back was Mysore Regal from CraftOud. It's just my favorite at the moment. I did break down and get a new oil - Mysuru Maharaj from Tabeer Oud. It is still fresh but it clearly has the Mysore base. For the price I would personally stick with Mysore Regal.

Hope everyone is doing well and enjoying their sandalwood!

Yesterday I went with a more "pedestrian" oil haha. Eden Botanicals - New Caledonia. I actually preferred the New Caledonia extra which had a great scent but no projection or longevity at all. Which is strange considering the "extra" title. The regular version has this sweet note that I just can't seem to place and it's driving me nuts. Reminds me of honeycomb but it isn't. I've found the same note in many cheaper "Mysore" oils. I'll figure it out one of these days...

Some New Caledonian oil reminds me of the sweet smell of plastic bags.

I have smelled one really nice buttery NC sandalwood oil years ago from white lotus and have never encountered another that smelled as good as that one since.

All the rest remind me of plastic garbage bags.

I have smelled this oil and Papuan (S. macgregorii) sandalwood mixed into supposed Indian oil as well. Another very sweet and odd sandalwood scent

Today, it’s a spray of high-grade sandalwood carbon dioxide extract I got from Eden botanicals what must’ve been a decade ago (at least) when Will LaPaz was running the business. He had two different grades of sandalwood CO2 oil, and this is the higher grade. I bought a couple of ounces and I like to dilute it in alcohol, and use it as a spray. This particular sandalwood has quite a present top note so it does well as a diluted spritz. It has a beautiful dry Sandalwood timber scent and at times almost get a faint whiff of a saffron like note. You would never confuse it for saffron, but it has something of that wonderful, dry dignified quality. Dignified, unlike me when I’m spraying the stuff all over myself.

I happen to know that this oil was extracted by a company called Nisarga Biotech.

Yesterday I wore an oil I distilled in July from Australian santalum album. The wood was standard plantation but it's one of the first oils I distilled so I like it!
how much wood did you use and how much oil did you get? maybe we can go halves on a shoyeido distillation?

When I did the australian distillations i was getting between 2-3%. I think if i redid those today though I would do better. The blackmeat mysore I've been working with lately has been giving me 4.4% yield. I think that can be improved on as well and I'm currently updating my equipment. All of my batches are small, 50-100 grams, because I only have so many resources and because I like to tweak the parameters everytime and see how it changes the outcome. I would definitely like to try using the shoyeido wood at some point. I'll send you a message.
