But I must stress that the synthetic musk he uses is next level, I was smelling the dry down of Juriah on my arm and it was 99.9% the same as real deer musk, I couldn’t tell the difference. He uses real castoreum, ambergris etc I think in terms of animalics the musk is the only synthetic he uses

I would have tried them anyway even with synthetic musk, because of his talent and the fact I have another synthetic musk heavy frag (Mriga by Prin) which smells wonderful.

Good to know that he uses the real stuff too though when he sees fit!

I’ve tried that also. Amazing stuff

I am wearing 2 drops of Turath II on my wrists today and it is definitely kicking my @ss. This is the most challenging attar in my collection by far and is showing me how much of an oud beginner I am.

The opening is incredibly intense with an in-your-face smokey/incense/camphorous punch. It eventually settles a bit and soft woods, light spices, and a warm amber peeks through. If I sniff my wrists too closely, my untrained nose interprets the oud as a strong turpentine note so I'm enjoying it from a short distance. I cannot pick apart the deer musk, even though the bottom 1/5 of the bottle looks to be all deer musk grains. I've only smelled synthetic musks up to this point so I need to learn how to appreciate the real stuff. It's possible I'm simply unable to differentiate the oud and musk at this point.

I can already tell how addictive this oil is and am glad it is still cool enough outside to wear it. It smelled absolutely amazing when I stepped out of the house this morning into -2C weather. The cool air outside tamed the fragrance a little bit and made it much easier to enjoy. I don't know if I would wear this in the summer or to work. Luckily I'm the only one in the office today because I'm worried it might be offensive to some people. For reference, someone commented on SP Cheval d'Arabie as "smoky and weird", even though I find that attar very easy to enjoy.

I am not a beginner and this is one of my most challenging attars in my collection as well. The white rose and sandalwood in this are very good. Per ASO there is also a hefty dose of frankincense in this as well.

Thank you for your kind words brother. I'm glad it's not just me that finds this challenging. I will definitely need some time and multiple wearings to fully understand this one. I think I may even need to explore pure ouds and musks in general to better understand this attar. I have yet to try pure oud oil and this is my first exposure to real deer musk. I will try to report back regularly in the review section of this forum as my experience with this evolves.

Please define challenging?

Hard to appreciate by an untrained nose. I don't think this would appeal to the masses in the Western world.

Right now, the oud (at least what I think is the oud) has a strong camphorous/turpentine quality when smelled from up close - I need to learn to get past that. I'm also having trouble picking apart all the notes. While I am enjoying it, I think it will take multiple wearings over time to fully appreciate everything this attar has to offer.

This is something I would wear for myself, most likely at home in quiet contemplation.

I totally understand where you are coming from. If you look at my post history when I first joined ouddict, I made a thread about feeling like oud smelled like mulch and fuel. Lol. Now I don't smell those things at all - and the oil that made me think that is one I now totally appreciate and can understand it much better. I think that's the interesting thing about Oud. My brother I show him oils all the time and he just says they all kinds smell the same and aren't very appealing. My parents too. For me it now seems shocking - Ill show them a super "mom approved" oil like oud yusef or one of ensars airy non barn cambodi offerings and they will say it smells like wet mulch.

Then to my total confusion, I'll jokingly show them a super barny or non "mom approved" oil like oudbases funkmeister or yunnan or Zenesis and they go, oh I like that one though... This is just an example. I can't remember if these are the exact oils I've showed them but the point im making is that it's somewhat of an acquired taste. And at the tippy top of the artisinal oud world, what I've kinda found is that the difference between a 1k Borneo and a 500 Borneo might be really negligible or unnoticeable to me. I think sometimes we are just talking about small differences in profile between oils. Sometimes it's clear one is better in the wood quality used and distillation techniques and experience of distiller - other times not so clear. Buy what YOU like and see what you like from the lower to mid end of the price spectrum first. Just know what you like will probably change many times the longer you stay engaged and interested.

But for sure I still find some ouds challenging. Especially those that feel like they have a "staining" quality - ones that are really smokey or overly diesely still aren't my cup of tea. I can appreciate them, but I know I don't like them so won't buy them.

Challenging for me is when it is hard to appreciate the composition because of a note or combination of notes that aren’t my cup of tea. I find it best to apply small amounts of these to oils as to not overwhelm “my” olifactory sensitivities so I can better appreciate and study to increase my knowledge of both the composition and my personal tastes.

I couldn't have said it better, my friend. I may have applied too much yesterday as I used 2 drops when normally I only use 1 when testing new oils. I was just being too greedy! I will test it again tomorrow in smaller quantities to not overwhelm my olfactory senses.

I am testing Kaashef today but will start a new thread in the review subforum so I don't muddy up this thread with my beginner reviews 🙂 I'll also transcribe my original thoughts over to document my journey.

Eden's fir balsam is amazing. It smells like real fir balsam sap.

I ordered some musk from Ulugbek last December 14, and now, over 3 months later I received it.
Hip Hip Hooray:clapping::clapping::clapping:

Okay....don’t be so hard on the guy, it’s not his fault, the first musk sent got lost in the mail, my buddy ordered some during the same time and received his in around two weeks, so I know it was sent.
So I allowed a few more weeks before I brought it up to Ulugbek. He gave me the option for a refund or resend, and since I got it on sale at $50/g, it was a no brainer to request a resend.
It is regrettable that he had to take a loss, but he never voiced any discontent, what a guy!!!

I also had an interesting and what was ultimately a very positive experience with Ulugbek. After quite a long time of not receiving a small musk package my home country’s customs contacted me. They said they can’t determine what it was. Then I went there and told them that it was an animalic product used in perfumery. The policemen at the customs got very angry and told me that I needed a number of licenses for importing such a product ( he still wasn’t aware from which animal exactly it was) and he told me to go home and to be happy I am not getting fined. Well it was sent back I believe, but it took a long time. Only after another couple of months I contacted Ulugbek regarding the musk. Another package dispatched no questions asked. And then, like most of the time, this next shipment wasn’t inspected by the customs and arrived safely, and is waiting to be used 🙂 .
