I might suggest going for something like this:

Or really any of RBO's Thai offerings - he's got I think the most options for proper wild thai oud on the forum at this moment. Ish says in the listing that this one doesn't have any soak notes to it, so thats a good sign. As always when ordering from Ish, he's uber generous with the samples so it's a great way to get your nose on many other natural scents while your at it!

Also - just want to pause for a second and say that RBO is getting slept on heavy in the reviews. I swear I check his page every couple months and theres always brand new oils! So many I want to try. He just humbly doesn't mention any releases but keeps putting out heaters 🙂 I really want to try this one: https://www.etsy.com/listing/914886322/wild-indonesian-oud-oil-kerinci-seblat?ref=shop_home_active_2
Absolutely agree with the RBO reviews! I tried to find some when I was deciding what to order from brother Ish, and couldn't find much at all. Ish's offerings are quickly becoming some of my favorites!

Well I'm not great at reviews. I lack the knowing and experience. But I have to say that their description on the wedsite is very accurate. The first thing I noticed is intense musty, wet soil smell. Which I myself love, being a gardener! Then I notice some leather, and I think a bit of tobacco. The end is a bit softer, with the scent of wood and resins. I CAN tell you it has staying power though! I like it very much, but to me it is a bold scent. Or maybe I'm just wimpy?
Not a shabby review there Leander.....🙂

Thank you! I'm still very insecure about my noses abilities though. I read these descriptions of "floral notes" and I think to myself "really? What kind of flowers have they been smelling?!" And then I see them say "No barnyard notes." Then when I smell it, I definitely smell barnyard. I grew up around animals. I know that urine, fecal, and wet straw smell! lol

Scent is very subjective.....and any description can only be in reality a close approximate to the individual doing the sniffing..
I too am comfortable with barnyard scent and find it comforting...although the first time I encountered it from an expensive 3ml bottle of Oudh...shocked me that I had made a great error....I work on an ICU ward....and perhaps one of the worse smells you can get, is from a human that is on a concoction of medical antibiotics...and then they open there bowls...😱😱
I associate the smell of human feces and dog/cat feces on a par with each other....to be avoided.....

Yes. Barnyard is fine with me. But human, dog, and cat feces and urine is radically different than the more mild sheep or goat or cow feces. I'm not too keen on the medicinal notes in some Ouds, Reminds me of taking care of sick animals I guess. Thank you for your service to mankind as a medical professional!

I feel there is a lack of complete transparency in the reviews we get around here. I think this reflects the strong presence of vendors and that's OK it's just reality. I've encountered some pretty bad oils but not said anything negative about them so as not to anger anyone around here.

I've been sent some pretty odd samples along with nice ones over the years. Things that smelled toxic or burnt or phenolic harshly medicinal or like a disgusting aspects of cat spit or anaerobic bacterial decay. These are things that I think have been poorly distilled and shows the unpleasant side of agarwood scent that can accumulate in some circumstances.

I never feel comfortable writing negative reviews I tend to just ignore those focus on the ones I like.

I will say this: if you don't see a whole lot of positive reviews of the products of somebody who is selling things at a reasonable price there's a good chance that people are not wanting to write negative things about mediocre oils.

Example: RBO is very generous. Deserves our patronage . To a fault and to a degree I felt obliged to only praise him and some of the oud oil smells clean and well extracted. Many of the samples I received were not wearable due to aggressive extraction notes, or maybe not the best raw materials. They reminded me of some of the edgy ouds I stumbled across early in my oud explorations. Advice for this vendor: sample before buying because he stocks some DEEP funk.

My point? Trust your nose. Ugly barnyard is real. So is beautiful barnyard. There is beautiful fermentation and over fermentation and its all out there... not all delicious

While I am new to ouds, I have to believe that most vendors have some oils that are not so great. I'm pretty sure it depends a lot on a persons tastes also. I absolutely agree that a person should sample before committing to an entire bottle. Luckily that is where Ish truly exceeds! All kinds of samples! And yes. There were some that I truly disliked. But there were some that I really loved also. In fact a have a wish list of ouds to buy from him. As soon as I get the money of course! lol
Also, I agree that it is human nature to not want to say anything bad about a vendors products. But I'm not sure that the lack of reviews indicates anything about the quality of ones products. Perhaps the purchaser was just too lazy to write a review. Or so inexperienced that they didn't know how to put it into words. Regardless, this conversation has inspired me to try to write more reviews. I don't have the proper terminology yet, but I can say what I do like, and what I don't.

50 ml of sandalwood on the way! Good stuff if it is the same as last time. $145 shipped! Now that's sandalwood I can afford to wear the way sandalwood was meant to be worn.

May I inquire as to where you purchased this from please?
It would appear to be exceptionally on the very low side of affordable, to say the least..
Just curious...but quite understand if you wish not to reveal your source....

Grandawood co2 sinensis still on the way. No update to tracking since the 15th... 🙁

also waiting on 50 ml of the essentialoilscompany (Amit / RKSons) $2ish/ml sandalwood. GREAT STUFF! This oil at least the last batch truly had that rich sandalwood base which is what I crave. Couple of drops wiped on my neck or upper chest and I am just in sandalwood bliss for like 18 hours. I am not getting this quality sandalwood-base note from any of the cheaper oils being sold in the US these days like those anemic Sri Lanka root oils.

Let's hope Covid hasn't destroyed this source.

I think the old trees are still going to be stolen after covid and pushed thru , oils are cheaper from undocumented sources, it’s not really scale that makes the oils cheap it’s theft. I’ve searched high and low and even at scale
( government auctions) wood is to expensive to honestly distill unless it’s plantation and in India even the plantation is pretty expensive.
That being said the available wood I have found so far has all been stolen , a lot gets shipped into Pakistan and then reshiped.
So no matter how much I’m willing to spend I just would never be able to produce quality Indian Sandalwood oil ! Maybe from some other regions just not the good Mysore

Ordered the 10ml sample. Even though the shipping was at much as the product, might be a good deal.

Last time I ordered shipping was almost the same day. I'm hoping that the delay is just because of the holidays or something. I ordered Tuesday, no shipping notice yet, which is weird for Amit. PayPal so I guess if there is a problem I'm covered? Maybe?

And the fact that the shipping is the same price as the product is a sign that you are not getting fleeced. At least that's how it was last time. See how the shipping compares to the oil price buying a 10ml sample somewhere else...
