I saw the post on the fangs, and all I could picture was a poacher holding down a deer and yanking their fangs off and releasing them. Much like what they do in Africa. I’m totally ignorant on the subject so I was thinking outside the box with respect to why the fangs are not allowed. Since I have no interest in musk grains (didn’t even know that musk was in grain form...thought it was a liquid), I would have zero knowledge that there were legal issues with it.

I apologize for my stern response. I very rarely get to log on, let alone post anything, so I was shocked by your post and was on my way out the door. That would have been a shame because this an excellent forum as a whole with tons of information. Thank you for clarifying.

@sg1011 i did not find your question irresponsible at all, im sure @Ouddict is reffering to random requests here from people for buying musk as opposed to geniune questions like yours. Also if its not clear in the rules can we please make the rules around musk more apparent

Now it is clear after respected Nadeem's post about Rules/ Policy. Otherwise, I myself was unaware of this sensitive topic. Though I knew it very well that in certain countries trade in Musk is a big issue. Now, the Admin has very clearly stated the reason.

I genuinely don’t know jack about Siberian Musk. That’s why I asked...out of curiosity. What is this forum up for if not to educate people? Is the expectation for new members to read through thousands of pages of Siberian musk in order to not ask ‘irresponsible’ questions and upset you? Your approach to someone who has no knowledge on the subject is horrible.

Respected @sg1011 , you are right that some time it becomes very difficult to dig out the thread. And your query/ question is pertinent to this thread as well. I hope, respected NinjaRobb would answer or would already have answered the question, except price.

On the discussion on Musk, I am very interested in it and have been for years. I know authentic Musk and I know fakes. Over many years, I have obtained Musk from as many sources as possible, grains, oils and tinctures, knowing most all of it is fake or heavily adulterated. I love the smell of Musk and the different versions being sold. It amazes me how Musk Oils/tinctures/grains that are supposed to be made of the same material smell so different.

I received supposedly authentic clean and dried musk from an Asian Country and separated the different textured grains while looking under a microscope. There were three different textures/grain types. At least 80% was something other than Musk and 20% I thought might be authentic by the way it looked. I tinctured the different grains separately in Perfumers Alcohol (20%) and one
tincture turned an Emerald Green color in the alcohol. While I know they were fake, the grains in this tincture had a saw dust texture and do not dissolve but have a sweet, musk-like odor. The grains, which started out colored dark brown, did get lighter in color after being added to the alcohol but retained their original shape/texture. Does anyone have any idea what adulteration might have turned the tincture bright Green? I have never had this happen before.

I recently received some fresh, uncleaned Musk grains from Siberian Musk deer and this was wonderful. Immediately identifiable as authentic under microscope. Many different textures and components - skin cells, different types of oil/resin cells, plant material, microscopic pieces of sand in nice, moist Musk grains and oils.

Today I decided to open 1 pod to show the musk.
Choice among 2 pods
and choice fell on this
The pods are extracted legally and in a humane way in December 2017.
They are not completely dried and about 30% of initial state.

Musk brown (Eastern part of the Altai mountains has a different vegetation, so the color of musk brown, Western and southern Altai mountains inhabits deer musk deer with black musk and black-brown, you can see photos in my posts earlier),
the smell is sharp and pleasant. The condition of the grains in appearance and touch-dry.
The taste is neutral with a slight trail of the smell, but immediately gives vigor and energy, clarity of mind.

As a fellow deer hunter (Bow, rifle; in the Pacific Northwest USA). I would like to know how the animal is respectfully utilized in all ways: Medicinal, shamanic, artistically and utilitarian -,clothing etc. I understand this contains many big questions outside of perfumery, but I am a rather unique perfumer! I have deep respect for this magnificent being the musk deer & thirst for knowledge & intimacy with the ingredients and product I employ. I read the meat is not used to the musky gamey flavor that is not appetizing, but perhaps the fragrant fat could be rendered and saponified, or used cosmetically to moisturize dry skin or, fine leather?

depends what you wish to achieve, but a good start is Malaysian oudh does well with Musk.

Thank you, @Al Shareef Oudh I have heeded your advice and I am currently macerating some extra musk grains I had in a typical cola-sweet spice Malaysian Oud. I opted for a rather potent maceration... 25% I don't think I will be disappointed.

I also added some musk grains to the already incredible Imperial Oud Ghaliya Solide ....

I do not regret these decisions 🙂
