A co-distillation of Jasmine Sambac and Cardamom from Jack Chaitman. From the bottle and upon initial application, it comes off as a straight Jasmine, very fresh and clean with impressive depth and a nice sparkly top. Feels pretty true to the flower. After a few minutes, the middle explodes with interesting and unfamiliar notes - green yet warm, a little spicy, fruity in the way good peppercorns can be. It all harmonizes really well with the jasmine heart, never coming across as obviously cardamom. Really beguiling stuff. I just love that 1+1=3 nature of co-distillations.

@Mr.P what attar did u swipe today ?
I had a swipe of Musk Osmanli today !
🙂
Lots of different things today. As far as mukhs go I was testing two of my own. Also working through some Yuzhi ouds.

One of the mukhs is a blend that features sandalwood, rose, grandiflorum, violet leaf, ambrette seed, orris and cassie, along with many other things. Kind of hits as a musky violet with enough jasmine to be noticeable, eventually turns into a Sandalwood fragrance. This one is very interesting - pretty punchy and it smells a little different every time I put it on so I'm still figuring it out

The other one is a peculiar blend I came up with working with my daughter… Lots of myrrh, vanillin, rose, ambrette, patchouli, bergamot, angelica etc. etc. - floral powdery, to rich resinous, to spicy vanilla.

I had a swipe of the Tibetan musk the other day - nice stuff - it's been a while since I've smelled the Osmanli.

This @Al Shareef Oudh ambergris oil is a treat - a very pleasant gentle clean ambergris centered scent - I don't know what (if anything) is in this beyond sandalwood and ambergris but it has dry woody, floral, and rosewood / linalool facets to it and it is quite appealing. I don't get any of the challenging facets of ambergris here - no halitosis or funk - the scent is quite clean. For whatever reason my nose interprets the blend as having a clear rosewood facet as part of the opening accord (coriander is similar as well), then it becomes more prominently sandalwoody with time. A lovely aroma - lays down a really addictive skin scent.

Aroma Sublime - Bolton’s Apogee

This is absolutely, astoundingly beautiful. I had to go take an extra shower with unscented soap to make sure I was smelling this accurately. Any pretension I may have toward mixing and blending, this made me realize I am not anything close to a perfumer. Right up front florals and Oud, maybe CambodI, Vietnamese, Thai. It really doesn’t matter. This smells like what my idea of a French perfume smells like. I can imagine going a date with someone and smelling this on their collar. Maybe they leave their scarf behind and you hold on to it and smell it in secret.

I’ve never understood what someone means when they say musky florals until this. It has the presence of a musk dry down, but from the beginning and when this dries down that muskiness is the main feature. Powdery, spicy. Extremely heady. Sweeeet! Bordering on cloying which I would normally never tolerate. It’s a lot! I don't normally like anything approaching traditional perfume, but I love this. It’s pretty, and if that turns you off you would probably hate it. I made the mistake of over applying because I made the assumption that pretty means weak or soft or wimpy. This a powerhouse of screaming flowery oudy overindulgence. With the Oud giving enough camphor and resin that it has a backbone to give it depth.

@An Najwa nagarmotha / cyperus oil is getting my attention. I am not a connoisseur of this material but this seems like a fine specimen - lovely dry rooty pepperiness. I am mentioning this because i'm realizing that to some degree it really has what i consider to be a "brothy" presence and even though I know that umami is not a smell, I can't help but see this in that light. It seems like a good scent reference for describing oud. I have smelled brothiness vaguely like this in various ouds as well - not smelling literally like nagarmotha, but having a similar "brothy" impact.

Last night I received part of my order of Annette Neuffer's perfumes. It was very exciting, although at this point I can only smell the top notes. It's a little easier with alcohol-based perfumes, they're a little sharper and brighter initially than oils. So I wore her beautiful Rosa Alba last night and this morning. Then I had an inner need to run back to my Teones. They soothe me mentally and spiritually. That may sound weird. I don't exactly get it. But it's almost a spiritual connection. So now I'm wearing Tea Rose Mimosa LE, which is floral-herbal ☺️ It's the rare Teone with ambergris

On topic:

Musk al Ward today. Rose & Musk, best combo? Maybe it is !

I've been checking out frankincense oil and enjoying the Royal Luban from ASO. I know some folks here had mentioned a preference for more viscous frankincense oil and this one is quite thick, and might satisfy in that respect. The scent is classic - pristine saturated tangy omani frankincense top to bottom of course.

I put on a favorite sandalwood perfume this morning, only to realize I'm not in a sandalwood mood. Does that ever happen to any of you? I hate washing off something I love, so much but I want florals and resins. Teone has plenty of that but it may be a day for ASO's Al Bayt al Ateeq II on one wrist and Sulaym's Ghaliyah on another. Not to compare, but to enjoy both.

Yes, I have been there. Sucks when it happens.

@Phan has spoken to Ahmed and I think we can put this to bed now. No hard feelings from any side. I'm still involved with Sulaym especially the Oud side but Ahmed is now the creative mastermind for attars! If there's any similarity it was a genuine coincidence.
A-ha! Thanks to both you and Phan for clearing that up. So Ahmed is now the genius and powerbroker behind the house of Sulaym 😱 I can hear him rubbing his hands and cackling with glee 😈

Thread is now unlocked. I’ve spoken to the members concerned and reminded Staff Members of their responsibility to remain aloof of controversy on the forum. Personally I read the posts and I really think it was a storm in a teacup. I don’t think the OP meant anything in a bad way, but it could have been phrased differently, but others also jumped in and things got out of hand.

I recently got a sample of Damascus from @An Najwa which I have commented on somewhere here before. I applied another swipe today, and really noticed how this is a distinct departure from the other AN attars. The opening is zesty rose and a pretty good dose of a nice sweet violet leaf accord, plus a number of peripheral notes that influence the fruity and citrusy character. There's quite a lot going on here besides straight up rose - that is most evident when smelling it from the dipstick where I get some interesting deep piney / resinous notes and an occasional whiff of something akin to grape, but mainly a sense that it is a complex mixture with parts in balance that I can't quite sort out. i'm going to see what I can find about the ingredients on this one…

From his listing here:
"It has a large dose of a green jasmine that is less indolic. It and the ouds (Papua Oud 2024, Khlong Yai 2017, Arakan Classic 2024 and a few more!) add this gentle coumarin-inflected herbaceous, balsamic and incense note. They are mainly here to embellish the rose accord, not to shout their presence."

Elevation - Al Shareef Oudh.

This is a masterpiece. From memory it contains around 30 different Oud oils of various regions, stages of maturity, blended to form a scent pyramid structure. It blows my mind ASO was able to execute this spray perfume concept with such precision & cohesion.

The top notes are kinamic, actual Kyara was used, it smells like wild Kyara heated on the sub. Piecing, medicinal, with that unmistakable luminosity.
A darkness begins to emerge in the heart, this is when the antique, floral, dark green Malaysian, Filipino & Indonesian Oud oils arise. Aged, incensey, deeply woody, resinous, musky.
Eventually the leathery sweetness of the Hindi Oud begins to envelop, providing a rich ambery tobacco aroma, without any barnyard. However, the most dominant dry down note is a beautiful high grade Vietnamese Crassna; a deep red Oudy resinous core, jammy fruits, sensual florals, an unctuous caramelised sweetness. This dance between the Hindi & Vietnamese Oud plays out until the end with certain elements playing peek a boo, one moment the 35 year old aged Fili reveals itself, then a hint of the Kyara from the top notes is apparent etc.
To fixate the ethereal nature of the Oud, the slightest touch of Musk & Ambergris has been dosed, while you don’t really smell these materials you can sense them doing their magic, unifying the various Oud profiles, rounding off any sharp edges & filling in the gaps.

My description doesn’t do this perfume any justice. The perfume of my dreams. Simply due to the rarity of the materials, this release had to be a limited edition, but it’s sad because I wish everyone could’ve enjoyed this beautiful masterpiece! Very blessed to own this bottle.

Wow. It sounds amazing. How long have you had the perfume/how long ago did it come out?
