Malacensis wood from Malaysia.
One piece seemed adultered with chemicals, another reminded me of animals and last one was just ok.

That's what you get for buying in seemingly large amount w/o quality control.

Really hate adultered pieces. I can understand lower quality wood but adultered with chemicals in a health hazard! Makes me angry just thinking about it.
Bro this is why the cheapest I buy is 150-500/g and I never have to worry about this garbage!

is there any visual clues you can photo? Curious to identify it. I'm sure I've seen it and not recognized.

I'm smoking some damn good super cheap Indian Mysore bead scrap via China. I'll have the KZ bead scrap soon to compare but this is deep sweet, fruity.

Without heating, I wouldn't have known. It showed its colors on high heat though. The resin did not bubble out as it generally does from true agarwood. I'm guessing they inoculated it with oil/resin/poison lol.

I don't buy cheap (ok maybe sometimes) and I believe you get what you pay for to a point. I'm happy in the $30-$50/g for special occasions, $15-$20/g all day long
The wood that I bought would easily be sold for >$10/gram at least. The wood 'looks' very resinated. But that was just one little piece in the batch. And it's impractical for me to burn a sliver of each piece/chip to check its' quality. Although I'm tempted to do just that. For the fun of it.

Many of my sessions end with little to no oils bubbling out of the wood grains. Some woods don't give it up! They smell great but aren't juicy. On the flip side, some oily woods that float off my mica plates don't last but a few moments of aroma? I wouldn't discount the wood for no visual activity...though I greatly prefer BUBBLES!

Shoyeido Agarwood for Kozutsu

I’m getting a Brunei vibe once again, but the finish is not quite Brunei-ish.
I’ve experienced a lot of different opening notes with Indonesian oudh, it’s a very big
area with a lot of varying oudh profiles.

With these little agarwood pieces I get a very big smell as well.

Sinking Filipino
- Medicinal, bitter, spicy awesomeness at the start. Later, some floral elements - hyacinth, pink lotus, orris butter, and a few more unspecified ones - albeit very subtle. 30 minutes in and it is still going strong.
- Interestingly, this one has very little of the oceanic qualities that are common in many oud chips from that and surrounding regions.
- Soon it will become this dark and elegant balsamic and oudy wonder. Last time I heated slivers from this batch, they lasted over 90 minutes at low temperature.

Old batch of baieido Vietnamese wood “Tsukigase”. On the subitism. This is a classic voluptuous agarwood and adds a sublime rich sweet tone to the room that is outstanding. The wood has regions that are more resinated and less resinated so this is a fun one to splinter and ship to find choice cuts.

Love this stuff - perfectly clean, no odd dung or cat saliva or “human who needs a shower” notes - the smell of the smoke and the residue left behind is clean, sweet, pristine scintillating and slightly spicy oud.

I have probably said too many time that I have a problem with a significant portion of my woods having “unclean human” notes, as someone once put it. I don’t know if it’s a reflection of the poor quality of my wood stash or if I have a hypersensitivity to a certain molecule. Whatever it is I’m happy to say that as far as I can tell Baieido simply does not sell wood with those cat spit and dirty human notes. I’ve sampled of the wood chips they used to sell via US resellers… the have a very good “nose” picking their woods.

To me even the old Borneo 3000 eventually leaves you smelling like a cat licked you, as do some of the higher shelf woods from Yamada Matsu. My “AA” grade logs and granules both have that same note (this is no comment on today’s inventory as I purchased these is 2001) and smell pretty good when burning, the residue is not something I want in my house so I end up having to cover up the after smell
