Fried Kyara sounds like something good to eat doesn't it? I have moved into my new place but haven't unpacked much yet, can't wait to get settled in and burn a celebratory piece of Kinam. I've waited a long time to burn it.
It would work well enough for just messing around. Functional but not ideal by a longshot. I made one a few years ago, but I am not sure where it is.Looks great! A pick made from sandalwood- good idea? I've only used plastic ones, do wood ones work too?
looks amazing!Mystery oud - old stock from a Hong Kong TCM herb shop that relocated to the bay area. This was the end of a circular log of heartwood that the pharmacist shaved slices off for various herb mixtures. This is a small chunk of what I bought since better or for worse I decided to break the log and up for two reasons. One: there was some wood that was less resinated. I wanted to try to get some solid resin sinking pieces, possibly to carve, so i chiseled off the lighter wood. I also removed the outer skin of the log to separate the parts that had been handled from the parts that were untouched.
This wood along with some musk pods and ambergris they had in this one cabinet date back to the mid 70’s.
Very sweet honey opening transitions to a kind of spicy bitter heavy oud heart. The dry down is reminiscent of labdanum. I have it on the subitism but I think this does especially well on a coal.

Would love to save some smoke in oil format. If this smell was similar to the smell I got in my fumigated clothes, I’d be very happy. It’s really puzzling to me the difference between the low temp extracts and the smell of gently heated wood. I wonder if there is a way to release that heated wood scent when extracting or distilling?
I saw a Japanese patent for a device that heated kinam in one chamber while a forced air stream blew the smoke into another chamber through a tube where it was forced to bubble through some carrier oil or perhaps alcohol. A little bit like attar creation, but not relying on steam pressure to push stuff into the receiver.
I imagine you could make a potent kinam smoke oil that way.
It’s basically the only trophy piece of wood that I have. I wish the labdanum note was absent in the last stage of the burn - a little too funky. I’m trying to think what kind of wood it would be. I believe it is probably malaccensis as I don’t get any crassna notes whatsoever and it doesn’t remind me of any other regions.looks amazing!
sustained temperature perhaps? Like, the oil is cooling quickly after being removed and then applied to your skin? how long did it feel hot on your skin for?I was just scratching my head over this again this morning. I made an alcohol-based kinam extract and evaporated the alcohol so it’s a paste. It has a nice smell on the skin but even when applying a heavy swipe, you really have to stick your nose right on it to smell it. Zero projection essentially just like a heavy fixative.
If I put a -tiny- bit of this oil on a mica plate on the subitism however, that little bit will scent my room.
Something magical happens when some critical temperature is reached. I think what I should try next is putting a larger dab on the burner and once it is radiating scent but not fully evaporated I will take the sheet off and see if the oil remaining on the mica plate has any kind of enhanced scent.
If it doesn’t smell that much different than it must mean that something is happening during the process of evaporation, some breaking or forming of a chemical bond or two
UPDATE: I tried applying the heated oil at its peak while it was bubbling and smoking (ouch) and it is not stronger in scent at all. How is this possible?

Just for a moment. I dabbed some at the beginning middle and end of evaporation and detected no increase in fragrance.sustained temperature perhaps? Like, the oil is cooling quickly after being removed and then applied to your skin? how long did it feel hot on your skin for?
They moved to a new location and I think a different family member took over year that I left and the quality of everything started going downhill and some major reorganization of the business was happening. They still had massive pieces of agarwood but they were not the original old stock from the store and looked painted. the old store had these outrageous sculptural oud logs in a glass case that looked authentic. Are they still around?
i dont know how much alcohol you used to extract but the less alcohol used the better. i have used 1ml alcohol to extract 1g of kinam and it is much different than when i did the same with 20ml alcohol. also the best is when there is ambergris in it.I was just scratching my head over this again this morning. I made an alcohol-based kinam extract and evaporated the alcohol so it’s a paste.
