some Bangladesh wood from Ish @ Royal Bengal Ouds on the heater earlier, really nice scent filling the room
I've not burned on coal in forever - I have a box of 80 coals and I appear to have used 4 from one pack of 10 😂, I'm heating some lovely bakhoor from An Najwa and can pick out a lemony rose/frankincense, creamy sandalwood and oudy goodness 🙂

I'm gonna throw on a few pieces of wood that I've slightly burned on the heater and give them a good roasting directly on the coal (am using a mica plate for the bakhoor). What woods they'll be, I have no idea - got so many "spent" chips just sitting at the base on my heater (it's attached to a small plate)

Shoyeido kyara from a dear Brother
Sweet, little bit dark, little bit sour.

Delicious, my daily meal is served.
All round kyara. It can be enjoyed in the morning, afternoon, and night.

I’ve been swapping samples with ward lab - I’m getting an education thanks to some really nice samples i have received. Here’s one I got recently that i have on the subitism. The smell is clearly crassna, but it does not smell like the handful of cambodi crassna i have smelled. There is some real complexity to the top notes that I actually don’t really have a grasp on yet. In addition to sweet crassna top notes, there are these streaks of mineral and earthy scents that come and go. Likes higher temp on my subitism. The tail end is very much like a couple of cambodi woods i have. Bright, clean, tart(?), wood over a vanillin note. A clean and very recognizable scent I especially value. Typically this bright woody note can go on for hours if the temp is right.

Wish I could do better describing the top note, but I will try again the next time I burn it.

I tried the ward lab diào kou last night. This is very very interesting- love this wood. A great balance of sweetness and some kind of complex buzzing multilayered pungency. Definitely comes across as sinensis wood.

it also filled the space with scent more than expected - enticing scent for sure - the scintillating wood notes are pronounced and have just a little bit of teeth. The smell seems to project (?) especially well.

the dry down has the sweet lingering aspect that crassna has but a subtly different scent - softer somehow.

I need to smell this a couple more times to come up with some decent adjectives.

As I mentioned, I have received a handful of samples from ward lab… really nice materials and I will try to share my impressions with all of them.

So here is a first impression of the Chong Lou wood from Hainan. This is a sinensis wood.

First, the top notes that came off of the subitism (with a generous heat level that will gradually blacken wood over an hour or so) reminded me of two different sinensis co2 extracts i have smelled that are espcially lively. One from wild sinensis, one from cultivated kinam. So that signature scent is there. I feel like there are at least two different chemotypes of sinensis in the specimens i have sampled - this falls into the more spicy, lively sort. In addition to all of the delicious sweet vanilla smoothness, there is a certain toothy top note - a little bit spicy, hot maybe.

I got a sample from Ward Lab labeled “mystery oud”. I put it on the subitism and had a guess at the species/origin… really nice wood, and I will confess upfront that I did not guess correctly.

Nice complex pungent top note - this one leans a little bit in the labdanum direction. I was thinking that that note came from malaccensis wood but this wood pokes a hole in that theory - it is not malaccensis. This wood had a slight labdanum / musk note throughout, more pronounced at first. I have smelled quite a few woods in the last few days… this one has a really rich top note - salty and sweet honey and beeswax as well. I think I will try this one at a little higher temperature next because I found that some of my woods with this note handle higher temp burns especially well.

Has that long sweet tail, this one is a little more candylike? There is one type of club fungus (mushroom) that is very sweet tasting and smelling - kind of fruity. This has a bit of that peculiar sweetness.

Turns out that this is Sinensis from Hainan “diao kou”, and it is a little less simple and sweet than some of the others that I have smelled - a kind of fleshed out sinensis. Apparently, this was my second time is smelling diao kou sinensis but this had its own distinctive scent. These pieces look different as well - darker resin streaks.

P.S. what’s the etiquette with pics - post thumbnails for large size images, or place large images in the body?

One of my favorite ouds is from that region I believe. An old Oudline malay - it is exotic and very long lasting. Dark, peppery, tangy, earthy

How does cultivated malaysian fit into the picture? Is it mostly malaccensis?

Condensed oil Kyara, suppose to be rare formation.

fossilized, hard as rock "some piece had softer texture"

at 90c floral, milky and sweetness, wood is complex

95c bitterness, powdery and sourness, more complex

shaved little of soft piece to add

now i get more of the bitterness deep in nose and throat, floral background, milky in between and sourness refined with sweetness balanced.

first time heating it but in love already <3 wish i could get 2-3gram of it =/
