Wazzup maunamoku! Had a bit of your tung tinge and heated some of the kalimantan sample yesterday! Nice relaxing experience. This is a heavy wood with a really nice bittersweet dry down and a top/heart that is somewhat labdanum like and a little animalic / musky.

I have read with interest some of the brief discussions about where barnyard / musky notes come from and whether these aromas are present the wood itself or a result of soaking or fermentation. I would say this wood shows some of those notes are inherent in the wood itself. I feel like this wood needs a little higher temp to really shine.

Heating slivers of wood at controlled temps is the way to go. A small piece of wood can last decades or multiple generations if burned this way.

Same here, Vietnamese.

It’s supposedly soil agarwood, or at least a mix thereof.
A touch of powdery florals, a little fruit, resin, and a hint of spice at higher heat. It fills my room with a nice aroma, which reminds me of high quality incense sticks.

Is this possible on a Mon-Koh style heater or do you really need a sub? (I really do need a sub).

I don’t really have the skills to handle coals properly, but I’m sure someone with practice can

Subitisms are super easy to make (ugly ones at least) and of course a treat to use.

Agree with the charcoal route being messy and a bit difficult. It's a commitment for sure.

Nichrome wire, a $13 variable power supply from amazon or wherever, and either mica or glass microscope slides and cover slips. A couple of alligator clip electrical jumpers or whatever things you wanted to use to make a secure connection between wires.

Off the top of my head I don’t recall the ideal gauge of wire - does anyone have that info? I’ll have to find my spool. It might have it printed on the side.

Update: spool says “#32 nich”
