Mate, that information you just provided is invaluable. Thank you very much!
Kinam heater is the best way to take advantage of precious woods. Subitism like heaters are good only for mid grade cheap woods mostly and mid grade high end woods. If fumigating the room is what you want then subitism is fine but if you want the tiny shavings to be taken advantage for much much much longer timespan then kinam heater is the ONLY way. When woods super expensive you should only chose kinam heater and close up smelling to enjoy and experience the aroma. Unless you super rich and can burn it non stop lol

Kinam heater is convenient but in fact a “subitism” can be designed in whatever shape and to produce whatever intensity and distribution of heat you want. The battery operated cup sized premade units are very easy to use.

all a subitism is (as i see it) is a variable temperature surface on which to heat wood. It can be turned up to higher temperatures, but it can be operated at as low a temp as needed.

thats actually the same thing as a kinam heater as well. but i never seen those cup subitisms i know a sub as one of them wood boxes cant really stand on top of it and pick up nounces. the kinam heater was a game changer for me. big time difference. i never tried a cup your talking about

Yes the format is super important- the box designs definitely seem more like fumigation devices. I wasn’t thinking of the box types which have become popular.

Here is a thumbnail sketch of a simple design that works well. Detail depends on what you have available.

The rectangular object is a glass microscope slide. It could be replaced with a sheet of mica. It is not a bad thing that half of the coils are behind the face of the glass. These rely on radiant heating as much as direct conduction which is why they do such a good job and transparent materials are placed over the coils. the coils behind the glass back up those in front with slightly lower temperatures but still plenty of radiant energy (really the unique feature of the subitism). Basically fills in any gaps with a slightly lower temperature, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Obviously, this method has its flaws because if you compress the coils, you can get short circuiting across some of the loops and less efficient heating. If you had a little diamond file, you could hitch grooves into the top and bottom sides of the glass slide for the wire to slip into.

The cover glasses will eventually crack due to thermal stress, but they work for a while and are cheap. Various members here have sources for make a sheets of approximately the same dimensions as these cover slips. I picked materials that I thought would be easiest to get.

The circle I sketched in represents a bowl or a dish. For instance, you could sit the slide in an incense burner that has been filled with packed rice ash. Or duct tape it to a brick lol.

There are two types of power supplies that I use. One of them looks just like one of those little wall transformers that come with desktop LED lamps and things like that. It has specific voltage options - 5, 7, 9, 12 v so it is not good for fine control. It was $14 or so

If you spend $50 and dont mind ugly, you can get a desktop lab switching power supply. These gives fine control and allow you to set voltage and current limits to prevent overheating.

Both of these are very useful items because you can use them to replace all of the different power supplies that you may need or have lost and to do electrical tinkering safely.

Wonderful information! Thank you. I'll be sure to post picks once I've put one together.

A couple of unfortunate typos.

“make a sheets” is “mica sheets”
Also “hitch grooves” should be “etch grooves”

been rocking more seasons of this beauty Purple Kyara, extremely gorgeous <3
have to say green and purple my favorite of all K

Hi there, may I know where can I get the above heater? Look really nice

Thanks for the links, what are the pro’s and con’s of each one?
the qijiaxi is one of two popular brands along with youyuan
Ceramic exterior, temp from 50 to 200, big heating area, nice in hand comes with bag and tweezers, dish and brush
whats bad the temperature led is down not on side like other one, slow charging, and need its adapter that comes with it for charging, and its battery inferior to other one and its slower to get heated compared to others

other heater comes with Aluminum exterior, smaller heating area, awesome led shows battery level on side and temperature range 40c to 260c, also comes with tweezers, dish and crush and USB-c cable for charging
you can connect it to PC, laptop or any phone adapter to charge, better battery level and faster charging and way faster to heat when you start it.
bad its smaller heating area, doesn't comes with bag thats all i remember
