Kangiitens "black meat" mysore sandalwood this morning. Never ceases to amaze with its complex headspinning opening. Getting ultimate creamy sandal with a little berries, and sweet so sweet! With that x factor I can't put my finger on. But oh the openings gone too soon! Guess that's my fault for going with medium heat, but I can't resist pushing out all that scent at once.

Anyone else notice the difference between their milled black meat sandalwood and the bead scrap? They sent me the scrap by accident and sorry to say but it's better 👀
What heater are you using?

The kioka! I'd really recommend if your into lower heat Japanese style heating. And the price is right. Doesn't have specific temperature control but you can titrate your preferred heat... which is more relevant imo.
Sidenote: people using specific temperatures (as do i) need to realize, that all that the numbers represent is just a sliding scale. If you have it set to 110, and then increased it to 112 you probably wouldn't be able to tell. 115? still probably not. 120? 130? 150? Now you can tell a difference. Why? Because it's a fuzzy sliding scale.
So what does this mean for you? This means that if you always only use 70°, 90°, 110° etc you are missing out on 96% of the heat range. So play around with 73° sometimes or even 65° and see what you get! Move it up gradually over time and get the whole transition!
Don't treat a certain specific temperature as your favorite or as a standard and you'll get a fuller experience.

I'll look into that one. I have a YuLanXiang heater and it does ok but I don't love it for some reason.

Thanks for sharing those tips as well, I will keep that in mind and experiment to see how it goes 🙂

Nippon Kodo Vietnamese

The granules are larger than the standard kizami cut, and some are totally resinated.
If the price didn’t double, I would have purchased more.
Speaking of price increases, at Kohgen, Baieido Kyara Kokoh and Koshiboku went up in price again, ¥165,000 & ¥77,000 respectively.

Comes with small amounts of aloeswood.

White Shin-Kyara powder from Kangiiten. Scored two bottles of this for the price of one and I imagine it will last a good while. The powder itself resembles a brown unrefined sugar and just as sticky. Wasn't getting much from the lowest temp so I'm now sitting on 130c and I'm getting more. Starting notes are actually reasonably dark and heavy oudiness but it also has a something behind that which I can't quite put my finger on. Camphor? I'd say that's it because I'm reminded of like a Dettol antiseptic. As it warms through this will disappear I imagine. More to come.

Sampling some 200 year old wood today. Such a different experience from fresh harvests it's hard to accurately describe...
All the antique woods I've tried so far have the same top note when burning/heating, like a strong resin/wood smell. Kind of flat too, and only releasing vapor on slightly higher temperatures.
But one minute later and the full profile comes alive, different depending on the wood as you'd expect. Even this part has a very different feel to it, almost feels like the smell is not in your nose but in the middle of your head. Feels weird but good.
Has anyone else had experience with very old wood (non kyara)?
