Baieido green rikoku set kyara purchased in 2007 - whittled some shavings to go on the kodotu. It's been a while since I've smelled this one! Got to see what all the kyara hype is all about. 🙂

I'm doing my best to sort it out here.

Very very pleasant aroma - and no trace of any unclean notes which plague many of my woods. In the vein of the inexpensive kinam going around in a broad sense - the connection seems obvious- but this is a refined scent - no flour/farinaceous scent or strong "spicy/jungly" or salivary notes that i see in ck sometimes.

there was a fleeting sense of a complex floral mix which i will look for next sessions; also in the pre-toasting stage a kind of multifaceted warm enclosing perfuminess supporting the kinam note that I can't be sure wasn't imagined. The toasty phase is very pleasant - complex and delicious with an edge like chocolate covered espresso beans. This all at the low half of the temperature range.

A little more heat and some gentle pepperiness appears. Beautiful sweet clean woody notes as well, a bit of a "ringing" quality - this is coming in more clearly after the toasty phase

what a beautiful piece 😍
would you mind sharing the price at that time? let's see how inflated is the market right now
I got a wholesale price maybe better on the boxed rikoku set from a US reseller who was an acquaintance of mine. I paid $650 for the set I think (including the kyara).

That's amazing description!
One thing i noticed in all top Rikkokugomi grade Kyara's "Shoyeido's, Tenkundo, Koju/NK" that they have insanely balanced aroma, no off notes no sharp edges and the 5 flavors present in all of them.
The elegance and nobleness in those pieces just heart stirring.

Thank you. I'm still sniffing that same little pile of shavings, on my or fifth or 6th three minute session. I have it at the highest temperature setting for the kodotu now as I did last time. This is not a fresh set of batteries so who knows how this compares to the high setting with fresh batteries, I can't really control temperature precisely on this. ( I imagine anyone doing comparative studies of kyara would want a burner reports the temperature of the heating element, has sophisticated voltage control, or plugs into the mains. To be fair I love this device in spite of its limitations, it's very practical for this kind of focused study and my issues with this are the ultimate first world problems ha ha)

So, Green kyara day 2 smelling excellent - got the chocolate covered espresso bean scent texture going on here. Doesn't smell like chocolate or espresso but I mean that combination of roasted and phenolic with delicious and confectionery.

I assume at this high heat setting the phenolic quality will continue to dominate, and if I had kept it down a bit that bright ringing sweet sunbleached wood I noticed yesterday would be more obvious and come to be the dominant note.

I might've toasted that out, I will do the next few at 2/3 heat. It may be time to move on though, start over with a fresh pile and some fresh batteries.

Lots of stuff i got a while ago but i haven't got full chance to share ther fully pictures or give them proper time for study.
One of famous incense i was chasing for years was a Kyara handed down by Oie school, it had unique look on the outside skin and inside.
Luckily i managed to get a tiny bit of it as there is not much left of the materials to share.
The poem comes with it says :
"When the wind blows, the dew of the clover scatters, and the moon in the field briefly rests on it.''

Sanjonishi Gyosui Kyara.

Have gone for multiple burns today to get the most out of my coal and small chips.
Have now tried all of the woods I got from my trip to Bali and all bar one are shit. Here's my learning curve.
Cultivated Borneo- stinks.. terrible stuff. I'm going to bin it.
Nth Kalimantan - I believe this is real agarwood as the resin that bubbled out was fantastic and I managed to heat this a bunch of times. Still a pretty crappy smell however. Are some woods better simply for distillation and not burning?
Maroke Papua - I don't want to talk about it. Straight in the bin.
Merauke - finally something that smells great!! Wish I got more of this now. Beautiful scent. I'll try this on my ceramic next to listen a bit better.
Brunei K Kangiiten - man this is pure sour cherry! Incredible! Stung my eyes a bit lol.
Sinking Leyte Yusa Aromatics - heavenly. Has been an educational morning. At least I ended on a high.

Nippon Kodo Sizuro Borneo

It happened again, sitting near the kodachi, mostly resin notes, stood up to leave room, that’s when the smell in the room was beautifully floralish.
I'm not sure if this is the same phenomenon you're describing but I always get major shift in scent perception when crossing a threshold from one environment to another. Stepping outside after being inside for a while. Or vice versa. Sometimes if I'm trying to figure out what to do with a blend or understand a wood or oud oil or attar, I will smell it where I am for a little while and once that initial wave of perception starts to dull, I move right to the spot where the air from the house and the outside mix and that is like the Primo spot for detecting subtle nuances for me especially if there's a big difference in temp/humidity between the two environments

Excellent shivers from gorgeous ~ Vietnamese Char ~ Maunamoku !

actually it's an all M A U N A M O K U woods day. His wild Kalimantan immediately elegant, the melon is real and I'm good with mineral.

Next joint in line is his sinking Borneo . . .

And soon to be in the mail Bukit Minyak, Penang. Hopefully. I'm trying to rattle his cage. Where is he?
