Finally examining my rikoku set (Baieido ed’n).
Kind of an odd one - has a full gram of kyara and 5 g of some woods, but only 2.5 grams of others. Sort of a half mini half fulll sized kit? The kyara alone I guess makes it worthwhile. There is a full gram as I said - a couple of larger pieces and maybe seven or so small chips. Most of the kyara is very dark and fully saturated with resin. Not super sticky but sweet smelling at room temperature and the splinters stick together. Some of the kyara pieces fade to less saturated wood at one edge. This is still super saturated wood in itself, but in contrast to the black, almost licorice-like consistency of most of the kyara, it is clearly lacking. Can’t help but wish it was a perfect cut of dark resinated wood like some sets, I’d estimate maybe 0.1g of the material is this lighter colored wood, 0.9 is all resin.
I generally take it out, look it over, and put it away. Been doing that for 11 years, only really examined the woods once or twice. I decided that this was silly so I got out the set this afternoon and started with the kyara. Just a tiny grain on my Kodutu battery chip heater. It took me a while to really appreciate how nice this oud is. The heater was a little bit hotter than I like it even on its lowest setting. It never gets very hot but it is nice to heat kyara very gently... could have eased in a bit more I guess. Anyway, the real surprise was the way this little chip has continued to produce a beautiful evolving complex scent over the course of six or seven different low-temp heating sessions over the entire afternoon. It is now black, brittle, essentially burned through but that sweet kyara drone is there through and through every time. It smells sweet along all the stages as different pleasant heated wood aspects radiate out in turn, little waves come and go of this subtle complex floral accord that is very much reminiscent of the daphne flowers blooming now in my neighborhood. This flower - same plant family as aloeswood. I wonder if I am just imagining a connection I smell it and Kyara?
