Emperor gaozong - scent Talks

Received quite a large package of his blends yesterday, so I only smelled each one from the applicator and this one seemed fitting for jumuah today.

After application, I was greeted with a fresh burst of citrus, possibly bergamot, and I could smell white floral notes, possibly frangipani being one of them, but I couldn't pinpoint any other floral. This blend perfectly matched the sunny day we had today here in London, although that's probably the only sunny day we're gonna have this Feb/march

Just had someone drop in the shop where I sell my perfume to talk botany, scent, and foraging. Left me with some home made raw birch tar - wild stuff.

I just found out there's a type of Zanthoxylem (Szechuan pepper) that grows wild here in New England where the common name is Prickly Ash. I will be working tinctures of this to my perfumes for sure - I know where there's a huge patch of it.

I stupidly tried some Szechuan peppercorns with my brother neat, and the experience was not pleasant, however the scent, I couldn't stop thinking about, I desperately wanted to make a tea with it, but because I'd be ingesting it, I refrained. I might try hand at making a tincture, it had this wonderfully complex citrus profile, with the slightest hint of a peppery note. Feel it would be perfect addition to a Chypre, give a bit more top to say Patchouli and Oakmoss, while sweetening it with Benzoin or an Amber accord.

I love Zanthoxylem CO2 - wonderful material - and i love to nibble on the peppercorns.

Amouage Rose Ta’if. The most natural-smelling rose I have, although it does have some synthetics in it (kudos to Amouage for including a proper ingredients list).

Just a lovely rose that deftly walks the tightrope between greenness and citrus acidity. Somehow both calming and invigorating at the same time. The aroma is not very long lasting - but that just gives me an excuse to go back to the bottle and take another swipe.

PS…I wish those celebrating a happy and fruitful Ramadan.

One beautiful material that keeps surprising me is linalool and those oils rich in it. I know this is a well known perfumer's work horse, but I'm just charmed by this material whether it is linalool isolate, coriander co2 or essential oil, ho wood, or rosewood. A dilution of coriander at 5% or so in sandalwood is a beautiful simple scent i enjoy.

Linalool is interesting because there is an intersection of floral and herbal associations - it is as much a part of jasmine grand as it is a part of lavender and cannabis flowers and coriander.

Yesterday Evening: I felt like I wanted to start the month off with some heavy hitters, though I have overshot. Jardin is starting to grow on me, though I still felt it was "stinky" per say, but to a lesser extent. Wanted to sweeten it out a bit with Kaa'bah Attar, and I think I permanently scented my wrist with these two. Maysam Co's is what I would describe as an easy wear, gives me Umrah vibes, beautiful incense amber-rose sitting on a dense blend of ouds, primarily an aged Pursat
- Areej Le Dore's Jardin Sauvage
- @SULAYM Kaa'bah Attar
- Maysam Co. 's المخلط الشتوي الفاخر (Luxurious Winter Blend)

This Morning: I wanted something easy on the stomach, the beautiful clean lotus in Izz Al-Din, not to mention its name was the perfect way to start the first fast. Added a bit of cough syrup Crassna because I felt like it. Really felt a deep happiness wearing these, Izz Al-Din was the winner here, no doubt about it!
- @elkhaldi-unscripted Izz Al-Din
- Sokkat AlTeeb Trat Red Chip Oil

Post Afternoon Prayer: While running some errands.
- Mohd. Ayub & Co - Seufi Super
- Mohd. Ayub & Co - Mukhallat Qaboos

This Evening: Revisiting this again and I can firmly say the "stink" has vanished. I'm getting a really complex attar where the start is a deeply resinous, albeit slightly sour Hindi. Still very "desi" attar smelling, Indian subcontinent memories through and through. Getting less of the Spikenard I felt at the beginning or what's reminding me of Super Malik Shamama,

Today I have used Rose amber Oud attar from Ahom World. Small review, three days ago I have received this three lovely long lasting attar from AhomWorld / AhomOud / Zakir Gafur attar from Zakir bhai who recently moved his business in Dubai. It’s their Ramadan pack but honestly saying the all three of them have such nice natural intoxicating sweet, spicy notes which will keep you happy and calm. The first one is the Rose Amber Oud have this rosey opening then smoothly moves towards the ambery note where during the transition it brings this cardamom like spicy smell and at the end it brings this sliding transition of the hindi oud smell. The second one is Patcouli Oud which opens with patcouli smell and moves to the oud smell. The third one is Oud al Oud is a Hindi oud mixed mukhallat which does have hindi oudy note without much strength into it and the oil seems not aged. The other two oils are more thicker and darker oils.

Areej Le Dore - Jardin Sauvage - totally overdid it today, the sorta scent that'll knock the air outta you if you're not careful. Three dots, that's it, maybe less but never more. Strong association with Holy Land Grade 2, that sorta I take care of horses aroma. I got more spices today, less resinous sour Hindi action. It's unrelenting as well, prior to this I was wearing a musk macerations made in Hindi oud, and even that didn't prepare me. A peculiar note of well worn leather coming out today, yeah very much picturing a tough Tibetan incense being burned. Rhododendron leaves are often used in that style, or I've at least seen it being mentioned, wonder if the burning leaves smell a bit like the oil, unlikely though. I think a rural spice market captures this perfectly, the scent of animals and their waste in the distance, dirt roads and merchants grinding spices. No doubt it's much more tame than that first day.
