Midnight Malaka - EO

I've been having a love affair with some of EO's products and falling out with the others. This one is the latter. To put it lightly, Midnight Malaka is underwhelming. I can't discern profiles that would make me recognize their origins. It's light-bodied, but the oil is the greasy type (weird, huh).

I'm getting light notes of the varnish I have come to love from certain ouds. But that's where it ends. I'm not getting any other scents punching through the void. I wanted it to work out, but it didn't. And it's past midnight 🙂

I give a 6/10

With only 1 month under my belt on sampling, I’ve been feeling like the less expensive EO oils can lack projection and sillage - EO Extraordinare is to me a great smell! First time I ever rubbed Oud into my hair. But it fades so fast.

Yet the price is set where…. I kinda get it.

I got Dokusan from EO. And it smells identical to Oud Extraordinaire. Was disappointed. I thought it would be something different.

Vietnam Organic - EO

It’s a dark brown colored Oud. Medium-bodied and not too greasy. I’m getting notes of hay, mud, wood, cottage cheese, nuts, and more nuts. They should call it “Nut Organic”. This is very similar to an old Cambodian but without the butteryness that rounds out everything beautifully. I appreciate the execution and I haven’t smelled an Oud like it.

There is no spice element or pepperyness, and it lasts a long time on skin and clothes. It completely overpowers any Oud you combine with and the same goes for colognes/parfums. It’s nice to have but not a need.

Edit: there is a pepper note growing stronger now.

6/10

Laosi SQ - Batalat Oud

A nice viscous dark brown Oud with a similar scent profile to a Hindi SQ. It has a Smokey Bakhoori scent that’s beautifully enveloping me. I smell dirt, wood, and fermentation. A lovely and luxurious Oud. Spice level: none to low. Longevity: low to medium on clothes and skin. I prefer the Hindi SQ over this even though this one is slightly higher in price than the Hindi SQ.

I give it a 8.5/10

Maroke -AlHashimi

Dark and rich brown colored Oud. This is an Oud-lovers oud. It’s has acidic, woody, and light varnish notes to it. It’s really strong too. I was expecting a Smokey profil. Its acidic quality is appealing.

Even though this is one of the lowest-price Ouds stocked at AlHashimi, it doesn’t mean it’s less in quality than the others. On the contrary, this is a great entry point to find out about Oud. It shares many characteristics of a great Oud. Spice level: low-medium. Longevity: medium;

Although I’m not big fan of Maroke chips, this Oud changed my mind on Maroke in general. A great grab while it’s a at’s current price.

9.5/10

Thai Oud Oil - Oud Factory

I love the bottle it’s in. I love the texture of the oil, It’s dark yet clear and clean. Beautiful sublime woody and Bakhoori scent. A hint of citrus. This is not just an Oud. It is an experience. Oud Factory is quickly becoming my number 2 place that I rely on when I need that sure thing feeling from an Oud or a creation. That said, I hope they come out with more region-specific ouds.

Firm 10/10

Junaid Oud Oil - Junaid

A lovely blend of various ouds that results in a Bakhoori, woody, and muddy scent. Very close to a Burmese Oud. I’m really enjoying it and the bottle is beautiful. You CAN judge a book by its cover in this case.

I give this a 10/10

Bronze Oud - Sokkat AlTeeb

First I get some smokiness that grabs attention. Then warm, woodyness like cedar and real agarwood chips give it a calm, deep backbone. A light sweetness ties everything together, making the scent bold yet easy to wear. Medium longevity and low spice.

I give it a 9.5/10

Hainan Chinese Oud oil - Fawn Horn

I bought this alongside some good Chinese kinam.

Dark red and very thick. Having tried some Chinese Oud oils (Broadlink) before, I was expecting it to be as tame and benign as the Broadlink oils. I was right. Even though the Hainan was thick and red, its bite was tender and soft. If you like light Oud oils that smell of Matcha or green tea then this Hainan is for you.

It didn’t hit the right spots for me. I give it a 2/10.

Buried Belongings Oud - Sokkat AlTeeb

Note: I posted about this on “oud of the day” but this Oud warrants a proper review.

Its a dark brown Thai Oud that that has very strong sillage, longevity, and projection. Extreme notes of wood and dirt. As if it was buried.

I kind of get lost when Oud artisans call their ouds something odd like this. But I've become accustomed to just trust the process with Sokkat Alteeb.

They are without a doubt my favorite oud purveyors. Quality is what comes out a lot. But the marketing of these ouds’ names confuses me sometimes. Names like “Buried, lost, bronze, old forest”. I can relate more to the naming conventions of artisans outside the GCC.

In the end, this Oud is phenomenal. Different than the Thai ouds I'm used to.

I give it a 9/10 (because it's so strong) 🙂

Malaysian SQ VIP - Wadi AlTeeb

A beautiful medium-full bodied Oud. Has notes of wood, smoke, and is giving off aquatic scents. Its a different profile the Hindi SQ completely. It has fair sillage, projection, and longevity.

I procured it from somewhere new and definitely will be going back for more to restock as this is one I want to keep in hand at all times.

I give this a 8.5/10

Nepalese Oud - Mohammed AlQurashi

This is a medium to full bodied Oud with candy apple, apple, cherry, and banana notes. I had forgotten about it and remembered that I got two 1/4 tolas of it.

It’s really special and I’m lucky to have this beautiful Oud. It leans on the woody side. But the fruit scent is really strong on this one.

I give it a 10/10

Philippine Oud - AlMoklif Oud

It’s a dark brown full bodied viscous Oud. Heavy on the dirt notes and a bit softer on the smoke and woody notes. It’s a straightforward Oud. Apply and forget. I wouldn’t call this a personal favorite though as I’ve tried some great ouds. There’s kind of a funky smell but it’s hot today so my nose might not be picking up the notes in a good way.

They say “put down the Oud in Summer’ but I’m letting go slowly. 7/10

AlRakheem Oud oil - AlShareef Oudh

The story behind AlRakheem for me was a simple story. If I remember correctly, I asked for something bold. I reached out to ASO find out what I could get my hands on. I told them Leen was fantastic, and they said they had something like Leen but unreleased to the public. They generously asked if I was interested in a bottle. I jumped at the chance and said “yes!’.

When the AlRakheem arrived I treated it to the red carpet treatment: a nice and coveted area in my Oud storage box (I have 2 boxes- one for the good stuff, and one for the up and coming). I removed some especially for my upcoming ASO collection as I believed the ASO numbers would increase as time went on.

The experience was nothing short of outstanding. It shared similarities to Leen but felt like it had more legs. It is fair on the sillage, projection, and longevity. The spice level was low too. It was an easy everyday kind of oil. No frills. I like that about this oil especially, and ASO products more broadly. Upon, finding out it’s a Prachin, I wasn’t surprised. Prachin goes well with Taif Rose oil and is frequently blended together. Although, AlRakheem can stand alone well too. I’ve got it on now as the weekend kicks off (last weekday is Thursday in Saudi Arabia).

It’s a 9/10

Looking forward to the next opportune catch I can get.
