Shoyeido knows what they are doing more so than any of us, this has to be an issue caused by the shipping department or a vendor / retailer.
One possibility: The person that the wood was purchased from stored their incense in a single space so that the woods were stored close to heavily fragranced incense sticks or chip mixtures and picked up the surface scent - I have had a batch of chips basically ruined this way.
Another: some shoyeido granulated incense is quite powdery and cloying to me. Maybe they were sent a granulated mixture by mistake?
