Ever tried the goku-hin grade of the Shoyeido aloeswood? The sweet aroma of the raw chips penetrate through the sealed package.

The only time I've smelled anything from agarwood without burning it is from some cultivated kyara in its packaging.
I get a feeling my sense of smell is wrecked. woe is me

That’s wild. I’ve never smelled sandalwood like this. I have one log (from India supposedly) that has some sweet floral elements that stand out at first.
Shoyeido Byakudan Old Mountain squares I received last week, I would describe like this - Sweet floral notes. A prominent white floral note which I didn’t get as much in the Kangiiten black meat. Both really nice examples, however.
The more I’ve been heating the Shoyeido, the more I’ve been appreciating the refinement.

Same mate. I can never smell woods at room temp. Only cultivated Kyara from Kangiiten. I don’t own any wild Kyara unfortunately, but I imagine the density of resin & oil would be even more intense than the CK.
I hope your sense of smell returns, it’s my worst nightmare!

yup, the Kangiiten ones are what give me an aroma unburned!
It's so weird, it's not that I have no sense of smell, I can spray a scent at 9am and still smell it at 5pm, just somehow my brain is tuning out agarwood.
Hmm, does the older we get, the more our sense of smell got distorted?
I'm not sure. Looking at perfumers for example, there are master perfumers, 60-70+ still putting out new scents

Tahitian Vanilla, grade special from Indonesia. I didn’t know raw vanilla smells that good. Even it can be eaten raw and taste wonderful.

Smell at room temperature divine, little bit kynamic, alcoholic and flowery. I suprised the vanilla scent is faint, unlike essence.
When heated everything is much more stronger but there is no alcoholic note.

I guess i am the first person that heat vanilla here

The other little piece of that sandalwood root from AlHind is on the subitism. Once again, I’m impressed by the performance of the Sandalwood. It really is aromatic for a long time on the burner. Nice warm classic sandalwood scent

Heating some wild hirta from Indonesia to assess it’s potential for distillation today. It is fresh from the humid environment so will require a bit of drying to allow me to explore it’s true scent but I’m thinking this will make some nice oil !!!

I just heated a sample of Mysore Sandalwood someone sent me as a sample with an order a while ago, only it isn’t mysore - it is either from Vanuatu or New Caledonia. it was sent to me over a year ago, so probably no point in following up on it. I would’ve let the person know if I’d smelled it when I got it. I would say the obvious thing: be very careful when buying supposed mysore wood. If you are still getting to know sandalwood, I would suggest starting with a specimen from shoyeido or baieido, and getting to know those very well before making any significant purchases of wood. There really are many odd things floating around labeled as Indian Sandalwood and if you start smelling these first, you might never end up with a good internal sense for what it is supposed to smell like.
