Heating up some ancient wood.

This is an old old piece of wood - from the Edo / Early Meiji Era. 1860’s at latest, given the provenance.

Not positive on the exact origin.
I think it’s Cambodi, based primarily on its scent, but also on its color and grain.

Very strong room temp aroma. Almost animalic smelling - which also makes me think it could be very old Laos.

On the heater - no sourness, but very fruity and Oudy. Smells insanely good. Blissfully happy right now. 🥰

What an incredible piece of history! Oldest piece i think I’ve seen on here so far. Can’t even fathom what something like that smells like😳

A good piece of wood can give hours of enjoyment when allowed to

Malinau from ward lab. oh man this is really hitting the spot for me today, i will try and explain the experience: comforting, warm hug on a cold day, and most of all is just lifting my soul with happiness and optimism! the scent is really nice and thick kinda like a slightly spiced vanilla pastry with a beautiful hint of mint, resinous oud background maybe a soft suede note as well. this piece has a bite that has a lovely penetrating effect!

I imagine that pollen from different flowers may smell different, but I use it in a general sense to describe a mix of notes which include nuts, flour, cream, bread crumbs, and a touch of plant stems.
Ahh, so lets take this Organic Vietnamese oil I got off JK yesterday (which was my birthday, so now Ouddict says I am 25 instead of 24, which is my true age) as an example, so when I smell the creaminess in the oud oil, you would say pollen or pollen creaminess, or just creaminess?

I have not smelled that oil.

Impressions are personal, you have to express what you feel, and even at that, our impressions can change from time to time due to many different factors.
Then there’s inspiration…….sometimes I’m inspired to give more impressions, or less, or describe an aroma more in terms of notes, or feelings, or objectivity (such as regions, comparisons, perceived quality, price, value).

When describing aroma, sometimes we try to be exact with specific notes, such as mango peel, banana, jasmine, hibiscus, or simply group them by category such as fruity or floral. At other times people want to express what they smell by stating colors such as purple, red, etc. or even qualities such as fresh, aquatic, medicinal, Royal, spiritual, meditative, heady, and narcotic.

I’m sure there’s more, but that’s just my 2 cents for now🤣

Yes, I agree with you on this one. I love how everyone is so personal, and yet also kinda not? Like we all take a little inspiration from someone describing a scent and use it in our own way, I believe anyway. Then long enough, I would reckon, we come up with descriptions that inspire others. It's a very spiritual, community based thing IMO. Especially because of this forum we have.
