Old mystery heartwood purchased in 1999 or so. From the medicinal oud stash of an old TCM herb shop in the SF Bay area, a business that had moved there from Hong Kong. This was the last of their old stock - they stopped selling agarwood after this sold out. I have shared pictures of this before, every once in a while I burn a small piece just to remind myself of the aroma. I am not sure of the species, aroma when heated is like honey, labdanum, ambergris, slight salivary aroma, hot resin. Definitely resin-oriented instead of oil-oriented and it seems best with a little extra heat to boost the hot bittersweet resin notes over the musky / salivary aspects that are stronger at low temps.

Wow! That's really impressive! What does it weigh?

I didn't have the answer to that so I just checked.

The large heartwood piece is about 21 g. The smaller chunks are about 8 g combined so that's about 29 g of fast sinking heartwood. The chunks of peripheral wood are about nine or 10 g apiece, so altogether 60g+/- that I still have although I made a resinoid out of an additional 20 g of it or so.

I think the whole lot set me back a couple hundred bucks at most - felt like a very irresponsible purchase at the time 😂

That's incredible! I can only guess what that would be worth now and I'd still be way off no doubt. Very nice score.

I also have no idea how much value something like this has. I feel like it's age and density are in its favor, but the aroma does not suit me as well as other types of wood in my stash so that lowers its value in my mind. I don't know to what degree my particular reaction is typical or just reflects my own oversensitivity to the labdanum type balsamic sweet musky type scents.

Yeah, that's a tough one. I wonder how the wood would translate into an oil?

Shoyeido Matsu square

A bad piece today,
smells like a dirty dog🤣
Oof... was there anything that visually differentiated the chip from the others?

AlMokhlif Oud - Hindi mini double super

Sweet clove and woods are the main notes here. I suspect this is Sela Oud. Although it’s just marketed as Hindi mini.
