Scenting the air here - nothing fancy just green kinam from Guangdong at moderate temp on the subitism. Getting a balance of the bittersweet basic kinam profile along with some nice robust combusting resin/oil notes. Very satisfying burn for me.

Lucky indeed are all of you who are new enough to take CK for granted (and of course those of you with collections sufficient to make something like budget kinam irrelevant!). The availability of affordable quality natural mechanically induced oil rich agarwood with this profile is just too freaking good in light of my first 25 years of collecting! Truly a kind of minor miracle, totally unexpected.

AlMokhlif Oud - Vietnamese Char Super

Smoky, woody, sweet. I’ll be using some on the medium burn coals and some chips I’ll break and use on the subitism. I’ve never used Char on the sub. I think it’ll work though as other chips worked so well with it in the past.

Kangiiten - Premium Hainan Aloe's powder. 3rd day on this now which is really like half a point of powder. Incredible longevity. Still no where near even 160 degrees yet. Caramel and honey. Nose numbing. Slight candied cherry. Hainan wood really is incredible stuff. There's still more in the shop guys. I'd be buying some.

CK - Sulaym. This was actually some of the first wood I bought. I think I've been going on the same 10g of it for a few years now. It's honestly some of the best CK i've ever smelled ( this along with CK from ASO ). Wherever it came from and produced by whom I don't know but it's stellar. The producer knows what he's doing. This stuff is worth the extra cash for the incredible honeyed vanilla syrup it sends out. Amazing stuff.

I wonder to what degree the resin improves in aroma with time as it sits in the wood itself? I wonder if you could do a side-by-side of those today with the way they smelled when you first got them if there would be any difference?

It wouldn't surprise me if there was a difference to some degree. I feel like I read from someone on here ages ago that ageing CK is a thing.

Old mystery heartwood purchased in 1999 or so. From the medicinal oud stash of an old TCM herb shop in the SF Bay area, a business that had moved there from Hong Kong. This was the last of their old stock - they stopped selling agarwood after this sold out. I have shared pictures of this before, every once in a while I burn a small piece just to remind myself of the aroma. I am not sure of the species, aroma when heated is like honey, labdanum, ambergris, slight salivary aroma, hot resin. Definitely resin-oriented instead of oil-oriented and it seems best with a little extra heat to boost the hot bittersweet resin notes over the musky / salivary aspects that are stronger at low temps.

Wow, @Mr.P , that's some old heartwood!

Dot of kinam resinoid on the subitism. Goes through several distinct stages - sweet sugary floral, hot resin bittersweet, phenolic ambergris / incense smokey, then slight sour burning wood fiber note at very end. Lily floral quality throughout. Somewhat softened, rounded, mellowed compared to the raw chips that it was extracted from.
