cambodi yellow soil. florals and spices and strong musk. on the kinam heater its a little bit of a turn off because the spice and musk is way too aggressive, but on the subitism like heater its extremely impressive as it shows more sweetness. really amazing wood. doesnt look like much either...i honestly cant tell if it is cambodi or vietnamese. shows both clearly and evenly. by the muskyness i will say it is cambodi.

First session of the year

mesOUD Pursat Char
KZ Hainan
and a powdery floral piece of
Shoyeido Matsu square.

Cup of coffee….Peet’s Cafe Domingo
with milk and raw sugar🤣
very nice!

Black kinam from Kangiiten. Given what I know now, I feel a little bit silly having spent what I did on these small jars, but I value having the different cultivars to compare. The piece I crushed in the mortar was very oily, actually exuded some oil that left a stain, so the resin and oil content of the material is good, even if the aroma is not superior to the less expensive stuff that is readily available. Smells excellent to me, just very much a typical CK.

I prepared this by crushing it in the mortar and pestle, there was a little bit of benzoin left over in there which is visible if you look closely. I'm not crazy about the aroma of benzoin with oud in incense - kind of sickeningly sweet. Baieido uses too much for my taste in some if their sticks...

Thank goodness!! So I'm not the only one for whom the aroma is never anything pleasant when heated, whether it be on a very low setting or God forbid on something higher, I don't understand Benzoin being used as incense. That being said, I don't think I've encountered it in collection of Baieido sticks, what I have is mostly from the daily line and the line just above it.

Some photos where we see your massive stone DIY subitism with whole raw mica plates, on which wood and resins leave their trace... I'm a fan, it reminds me of "art brut" sculptures (the organized and arranged backgrounds of the various bottles give a very artistic contrast to the whole).

I don't know how much attention you pay to all these details when you take these photos, but I find it very artsy/stylish!

That's great, thank you, the backdrop is just my workspace - I got these old drawers from a print shop that were used to store the various type faces, and I propped them up against the far side of my workspace vertically kind of like a shadowbox just so that I can keep an eye on samples that I want to repeatedly check out. I don't want to break the illusion of stylishness, but it's a somewhat functional workspace in fact I will attach a slightly zoomed out picture of one section of it. I would actually like to put a little time into putting in some built-in cabinets and so on.

Thanks for noticing - I do try to make the best of whatever happens to be in front of me, and will push things around a little bit and consider the angle before taking the photo for sure. it gets a little chaotic...

I was talking about your photos in general, not just this one; you have a really recognizable aesthetic signature!

My English isn't great, so to help me explain what I mean, I’ll use another example of some pics you shared. Even though there’s no 'subitism' burner or 'tidy' background in it... We can still immediately recognize the 'Mr. P' style (at least I can!) haha:

Anyway, if what I'm saying makes no sense, it’s probably because it doesn't. I haven't slept much, and my English skills regress exponentially with every hour of missed sleep.

I'm humbled that you thought it was worthy of mention, I do understand what you are trying to convey (and it never occurred to me that English was not your native language!). I make some adjustments to the color and contrast to try to have what's on my screen look a little bit like what's in front of me as opposed to accepting the rather flat illumination that my phone tends to default to. Very often the phone makes some decision about exposure level based on some feature of the scene that's not the one that is of interest, and I make some little tweak to the pictures before uploading to keep a consistent style.

Btw knowing how to create a visual universe is a major asset for futur artisans/perfumers who start from scratch and not associated with the well-known brands/names. Since we cannot (yet) share scents over the internet or social media, we can share our inspiration through other mediums. Just as the perception of music or sound is multimodal—engaging several of our senses at once—a perfume or a scent is not limited to a simple list of ingredients or a distillation site!

However, (and I think this is even more tricky in this field), artisanal/natural perfumers have to to find the right balance between an authentic artistic signature and the constructed identity of a product and its brand. Mainstream houses—including "niche" brands—rely heavily on this, over-investing in packaging, storytelling, marketing...everything except... for the fragrance itself, at the end... Lol

I burned a tiny sliver of Habzoud sinking sri lankan just to quell my impatience (I got a delivery today but am at work). I'm only used to cheap, perfumed bukhoor. I had no idea oud could be minty like this! Haven't quite wrapped my head around it, but I'm excited to sit down with it properly. Also realising this electric burner with no temp control will not cut it anymore...

That mintyness can be so appealing - sri lanka and tarakan wood in my stash have that aroma. it comes through in an interesting way in oils distilled from these types of wood.

more than maybe 5 years ago, I sniffed an empty sample of Musc Gardenia Ghalia and it absolutely blew my mind. Someone told me it was the walla patta, but did not elaborate. I've been chasing that understanding for the longest, and it clicked finally. Crazy stuff. I just got off work and am about to go šŸ„Žāš¾šŸ€ deep into some oud oils

And just like that, another Ouddict is born.
