in the spirit of keeping things weird in my neighborhood and giving my daughter a chuckle, I did my late night walk last night with a small candle lantern, which amazingly held up through the entire walk. I put this in burn of the day because I was thinking if I could stick a little frankincense on top of that lantern it would be like one of those tea light burners, not only would I be able to see where I was going but I would also perfume the night air. It was quite dark but my camera has some long exposure thing it does so the result is what you see.

Yusa Nha Trang Bead Scrap

I’m studying this again today. Even at lowish temperature it quickly turns jet black and starts to weep/exude. At low-mid temp it has a nice, pleasantly sour berry sweetness, but also a certain carpentry shop dustiness that I am less enamoured with. When I take the temperature higher, the wood begins to audibly sizzle and tarry resin starts to bubble up to the surface somewhat - gunks up the mica plate like crazy. At higher temp, it’s possible to discern a slight floral note, but it’s also darker, smokier and tarrier - as one might expect.

It’s cool to have a wood like this that’s interesting at the full range of temperatures, even if it’s not my favourite overall.

I have some of this but am yet to try it. I'm a shocker for buying woods and then just leaving them. I do recall it's a very hard wood? Not like a standard chip. I'll scrape a bit off into my handheld and see how that goes before commiting it to the sub.

Yeah, it’s very dense. I have tried it both as shavings and portions snapped off some of the thinner pieces I got. Be interested to know what you make of it. 👍

Yamadamatsu SS Aloeswood

Just a little fragrance from today’s piece,
being a mixed lot, there are always a few
underperformers.
I find your breakdown of these lots especially interesting - on a certain level it is surprising that things aren't sorted by aroma, given the origin.

The first time in 9 months that I have layed down to rest during the day. I was more exhausted than usual. I only lay down to sleep at night. I never do naps or little breaks or lay down on my sofa or my bed during the day. I am mostly on my feet or at my desk. Due to work I walk an average of 14,000 steps per day, usually more.

So this time I set up a timer for 30 min and decided to burn some Pursat Char with little bit of Mysore Sandalwood dust from @mesOUD Abi.

I closed my eyes and contemplated about my life.
I thought about my late father, and somehow about my childhood. And how slowly I perceived time as a child. Meanwhile sweet fruity resinous cherry, honey notes emerged from the sub. Slowly the creamy woody buttery notes from the Mysore Sandalwood accompanied the Pursat.

Out of nowhere, I was woken up by the ringing of my phone and realized that I had nodded off for roughly 15 minutes. I felt relaxed. More importantly, I was able to remember events from the past that I thought I had forgotten.

I promised myself that I would allow myself to take a break every now and then.

Some cultivated Green Kinam slices. At ambiant temperature, this CK smells very bitter and with a fresh grass note. This note remains a little at low temp, and at mid temp you get the typical CK honey-sweet/vanilline profile. Nothing extraordinary, something you enjoy in the background.

I heated some of this amber - this was collected in fossil beds in Montana, this type of amber is about 30 million years older than the Baltic type - scent from the age of dinosaurs! Took a very long time at high temperature to start yielding aroma but when it did it was quite beautiful, phenolic resinous, a bit smokey. Very much similar to the scent of smoking baltic amber. It didn't melt but it became soft, and when it cooled down it became extremely "friable" and easily crumbled into powder. The aroma would be so wonderful to have in an oil form, the scent was a lot like some choyas.
