That looks like a good mix. The clove really potentiates the sandalwood aroma. What % tabu did you use?

I think patchouli should be in most incense mixtures. Adds depth and an “authentic incense” lol smell to me.

Another one like that is costus. Really adds depth and dimension - highly recommend experimenting with this.

I recently got a sample of a mysore stick from maunamoku which has me thinking about making some incense sticks myself. these are thin extruded sticks and smells like straight-up uncut sandalwood powder to me - great sticks.

Edward - the 30% tabu… have you tried greater and lesser percentages? I think oudamberlove laid it out for me once but the knowledge didn’t stick.

I got a couple of bags of Himalayan juniper from mermade and plan to use this as a base for some incense blends. All of my previous blends were in a base of sandalwood and tabu or aloeswood and tabu and I am realizing that this makes an excellent and reasonably inexpensive base or “carrier” material for the stick and opens up a lot of potential for other avenues of scent and for more subtle use of agarwood.

I would love to see some sustained conversation here about incense making and attar creation - we could learn a lot from each other and in turn hopefully leave a trail for future aspiring fragrance lovers…. It is some thing of a tragedy that those old yahoo groups vanished, because there was a wealth of information there. Casualty of the “digital dark age” phenomenon…

I think a group conversation would be awesome! The 30% was a shot in The dark first attempt. It went extremely well as I’d rather burn this stick than the commercial ones I tried from jing .
I made a tabu mix with my spices as a base with 70% spice mix 30% tabu and then once I mixed my sandalwood I added more pure tabu to reach an overall % of 30% .
I used hydrosol from my Sri Lankan oud distillation to wet the mixture!
It the future I will bring down the tabu % until I find the best ratio of a good burning stick

Maunamoku: did you make the sandalwood sticks you sent me?

Did you notice a big effect from using hydrosol? I've been using around >10% tabu recently, but the sticks are too crumbly and delicate.
The hydrosol has a great scent , it adds a bit to the overall scent but with using Mysore that has 8% oil it’s very sandalwood forward,
This stick has more oil from the sandalwood than a stick that’s 95% sandalwood of The very common >3% type wood . Quality starting materials are everything in all types of manufacturing no matter what you make.
To me quality control is something you do personally and internally before selling anything , not passing along a story that was told to you by someone else as a fact.

Don't tell me this is the first purchase you made of him?! :O
He's pretty well known and makes quality products!
But if you're new to him, you'll realize that most of his agar incense share a very specific common DNA in them. It's probably the way he processes them with honey. His herbal sticks are great too. I find them to be quite therapeutic honestly.

Yes I am new to artisan incense. I had a bad start with receiving commercial grade incense resold as artisan and I was just turned off completely and had zero interest after a few bad experiences with so called artisan products from resellers.
Fast forward a few years and I was gifted a Shoyeido sampler and that changed my mind. Now I am reaching out into the incense world again. This time I am only spending money with artists not vendors and exploring ingredients and playing around with making my own . I’m having fun and enjoying and learning.

Try out craftincense and kyarazen incense next [through kangiiten]. Their aesthetics are very similar because the owner of the former is a student of kyarazen. You'd have much better luck scoring incense from craftincense than from KZ though.
