Haha! Yeah man, maybe I haven't tried enough good quality woods yet but with what I have tried I've never understood the whole cool "minty" thing. I have a very under-trained nose to be able to identify scents or put words to them. It smells more like a nice hud kind of warm not spicy.
Youll get the cool minty thing once you have tried a batch of some really good green kynam. @Faizal_p has some, I can't remember the company he owns though. Also, www.pureoudh.com has some really nice green kynam.

Does anyone think that AIR, affects the smell and strength of an incense stick? I think it does... this gets annoying sometimes, especially in Scottish winters, because you sometimes just cant have a door open because of the wind, a window in the other room is fine, but that doesnt seem to affect it until there is enough fresh air in the living room already, ugh. Rant Over.

BUT: Any ideas guys?

I agree, and it applies to oud oil also.

Baieido, “Tobiume”. This was a free gift from Kikoh Incense. I am fumigating my house right now and it is lovely, not overpowering, with lots of unexpected nuance.

Description from Kikoh:
When I first started out collecting Japanese incense, Tobiume was a budget friendly favourite. I think it was Indonesian agarwood used in this if I'm not mistaken. It was very enjoyable at the time. I think I might get another box soon for the nostalgia. Did you try the Samurai series from Baieido?

What did you think of the Samurai series, Simla ? I've been considering them, but not sure where they fall in the range of their offerings.

I haven't tried them, but thinking about Tobiume and Baeieido for a minute reminded me that I saw those last year and was curious about them. Must be the clever packaging. Originally, there were 4 in the series.

I imagine, as with all Baieido products, you get what you pay for. Likely the quality is somewhere in between Kai Un Koh and Ho Ryu. I should do another Baieido order soon. Their upper mid-range sticks are very enjoyable 😀

My main somewhat premium incense today was again, Tenpyo, Peaceful Sky by Shoyeido in the Horin range. Each stick I use I get more confused, not more enlightened aha, such a complex aloeswood (possibly kyara) stick. I use the Genroku and Tenpyo, Peaceful Sky in the same way I use fragrant woods on spent coal with a mica sheet. Somewhat in a ritual manner, I go into my room and put the stick into the holder then shine a light on it (most of the time, I have noticed with woods on coal that the light actually attracts the smoke to the area the flaslight is in, the sticks KINDA do the same, but as I have always thought, I think incense sticks have their own mind lol) and then waft the smoke into my face or near me every so often, quite a lot actually, the notes are so complex its quite insane, for both of them, but the Genroku is more creamy, sandalwood-like aloeswood, with an earthy woody scent, this is pretty consistent, with the Peaceful Sky, it seems it changes each stick? Weird, but it doesn't change drastically, just in little minor ways, that throws me off. It is a very sweet stick, sometimes becoming very woody, sometimes being very resinous (in the aloeswood way) and sometimes being bitter or "bitterly sweet" would be a better way to put it.

I need more times with these sticks, and may buy more in the range to see the differences of each stick, and I really want to get their other last aloeswood one, and then venture onto their sandalwoods and sandalwood with other aromatics like frankincense.

Quick, you can order from Kangiiten quite easily I have seen? I would get these, QUICK: https://www.kangiiten.com/products/black-meat-mysore-sandalwood-ambergris-incense-by-kyarazen
This is KZ's limited edition incense sticks of the year, the Oud ones are already gone, and my box will be here hopefully tomorrow, if not then Wednesday!!! Can not wait. First KZ's premium, limited edition, incense sticks I will have tried... since I have only been into this for like nearly a year on around April/May.

I just enjoyed some Shoyeido's Five Hills, Gozan incense stick, 3 of them all at once, from their Daily Range, the 2nd most expensive one lol. It uses quite a nice amount of Mysore Sandalwood, and the spices just compliment it to a really nice degree, you can really smell the dry Indian, Mysore sandalwood in this stick. Usually I just use 2 and my incense plate has an Indian stick holder (hamsa hand) and I place two Japanese incense holder at each side of the hand and put the sticks on each of them and they cross lol. These are very good sticks, I like them alot from the daily range.

@Hamza H 's Vintage Sinking Merauke. Even low temperatures coax out the fragrance in this wood. Started bubbling at around 6.5 on the sub. At 8, it's giving vapors that get animalic once you get your nose right on it. The smell is peaty, somewhat toasted, and sweetly ozonic. The overall character of the scent is dry and powdery.

If I rip it up to 12, the smoke gets more camphorous and cooling.

I just received some more sticks from www.lotuszenincense.co.uk, Jinkoh Yosei and Byakudan Kobunboku, Byakudan is Japanese or a Japanese name for sandalwood. I am burning the Byakudan Kobunboku right now and it is really, really nice, and for the price, they are phenomenal... only £10.99 for 80 sticks!!! And they smell like nice good Indian heartwood (like the description says on these sticks), a nice dry impression that isn't too dry with some of that normal sandalwood creaminess, and some buttery-ness is starting to come in now after a couple mins into the stick, very woody and rich. These are some nice daily burners.

Kyara Zen: River Convergence
"A Blend of premium, almost sinking grade Tarakan, Brunei, West Malaysian, Papuan Tigerwood with a tiny accentuation of ambergris to give a rich wholistic representation of the core notes of South East Asia fragrantwoods"

The ambergris is quite pronounced in the half stick that I tried. The personalities of the 4 woods pop up here and there, but my experience earlier really had me noticing the Malayasian and Papuan varieties right away.
Looking forward to spending more time with this and unravelling what's happening here. 👍

Sounds fantastic!

Ohh, you got the aloeswoods box, nice one, those sold out super fast. I am waiting on the KZ's Limited Edition Mysore Sandalwood with ambergris incense, should be here tomorrow, or, Friday at the latest. Since it is in my country, and left London last night so heading up to Scotland and probably will be out for delivery tomorrow 😀 But I get up super late so itll probably be pushed through the letter box, left outside the door, or my worker may get it for me if he cant get it through the letter box, if I miss it I can always say to Royal Mail to just deliver it the next day at the Post Office round the corner, but I am pretty sure they can fit a small vial of purple kynam and these incense through the letterbox.

Can not wait!!!

I'm sure you'll love his sandalwood incense. I was going to grab that one, but decided to order a couple of his perfumes instead and see what he's up to.
