2023 Sumba Extreme Vintage Sandalwood oil by The Tea Guru (@Guru_AromatiX ) that I got a ML of in November and still have more than half left. Nice oil, very nice. Starts off with hardly any resemblance to normal sandalwood oils for the first 15-20 mins. Starts with a leathery, woody note... then after 15-20 mins you get this amazing, very, VERY rich buttery note, then comes along some milky, lactonic notes that just goes right into the sky of full on cream. The woodiness is very much prominent but in a soft, gentle way, sweet as well. Some fruity notes early on after the 15-20mins as well? Maybe some florals, too? Very sophisticated sandalwood oil!!!

This is black and red meat sandalwood oil.
This one is next on my list for sure. Sounds incredible.

A dab of the 1990’s mysore from an najwa. I’m enjoying the mid/base portion of the fragrance right now, which is fantastic, very very appealing cool dry woody and true to the aroma of some carvings I have had a chance to sniff said to be from authentic mysore wood.

I have not smelled oils with this particular profile since the 90s. I would love to hear another members take on this oil’s profile.

ASO Mysore 2021. I'm very new to discerning notes within sandalwood as I don't really have others to compare it too as of yet other than the Kangiiten Mysore special reserve. That one is very buttery from the outset but does not like to hang around and is gone off the skin very quickly. The ASO however starts with a citrus note? Is that what people call it? Kind of sharp like an orange but this mellows out to a lovely woody butter dry down which just seems to go on forever. In fact I can still smell the oil that I put on my forearm going onto 24hrs ago. This stuff is wild!

1990’s An Najwa vintage mysore (SQ) has been getting my attention the last couple of days. The performance is really beautiful when I put just a drop on my wrist or forearm and allow the smell to gradually waft up throughout the day. There is a unique sweetness to the opening that I haven’t smelled in oils sold as Mysore since the 90’s, and even a small amount surrounds me with very pleasant, classic tantalizing sandalwood aromas for a nice long period of time.

I find myself repeatedly surprised and amused to be smelling something that I never thought I would smell again, and which I had begun to lose my memory of (due to the fact that I only experienced it for a brief period in the earlier parts of my “journey”).

Very interesting Sandalwood! I think this one has that true “old Mysore terroir”. I can’t say that with any certainty, but my experience suggests that is the case. So psyched by the chance to reinforce that memory. I would love to hear someone with more/different experience than me reflect on this particular oil in connection to their experience.

Kangiiten's (Special Reserve) aged Mysore - I got this around 2-3 months ago, I believe? I have put it on other people as well so it has been used, but I just haven't put it on myself very much as I like to take breaks from sandalwood oils then I go on a binge with them lol. The picture is just to show how much I have left after I put the amount I have on right now on my skin. I put quite a lot on actually, usually I would only puta little on, but today I just tipped the bottle and shook it a little then started tapping, tap tap tap tap, until a good amount of drops came out, then I tapped the oil a bit, then rubbed it in very, VERY gently into a square shape on my upper hand facing me.

This oil is great, it starts off very, very strong, rich creaminess, butteriness, fruitiness and oh so gourmet, and not much of the unique sandalwood, wood note. After around 15-25 mins, it quiets down and that's when it starts calming down, you notice a very high quality woodiness that is delightful, cream and butteriness is still there but with an oversight from the wood note balancing them between each other, sometimes milky instead of creamy, but most of the time you get that full woody-creamy note, and a buttery-woody note, with notes of citrus, especially if you do rapid and fast sniffs at a certain area on the skin that its on, or a deep inhale will give you citrus woodiness. The more it develops on my skin the more I start to smell a frankincense like scent from the citrus, and some florals too.

Lovely oil. Good aged sandalwood found in Japan... or atleast that's the official story anyway.

EDIT: Also some vanillic notes the more you go into the heart. Clean, just out of the washing machine, soft powdery, linen notes.

Mesoud NTT at the moment. Absolutely outstanding Sandalwood oil... I have a lot to learn but these Hydro sandalwood oils really hit the spot. I generally see them as characterized by complex multi layered top notes, including some musky aspects that really appeal to me.

I'm sure this must be amazing. sandalwood hits different.

Sri Lankan Sandalwood that I have 6ml of:

Starts off very, very creamy and buttery, so much so that its hard to tell them apart they are so rich, but the oil is so sweet that the creaminess came with a vanilla note and quite a bit of florals as well that continue past the top notes for a little while too, no wood notes whatsoever until around 15-20 mins later as it develops. Then a lovely sandalwood note comes in, balancing the cream with the butter notes, a little bit of nuttiness too, the floral notes still somewhat present but everything becomes softer and more well rounded, eventually you get notes of fruits (not sure what kind though, quite hard to tell), 1hr 45 mins in and I was getting some sweet, candy notes with the cream and butter in the kitchen making a sweet, delightful dessert, gourmet, gourmet, gourmet!!!

Lovely oil.

Mysore Pre2K - Rising Phoenix Perfumery

A lovely vintage Mysore which opens with beautiful freshness, florals (purple florals but also softer tropical florals in the background). There is a very light pepperiness to this oil as well and some powdery and buttery facets which develop into the drydown.

I did some comparison between this and JK’s now sold-out Sumba Imperial.

It was really interesting to note the similarities in their floral facets while Sumba Imperial tended to be much more dense, heavy and gourmand than the Mysore pre-2k. The Mysore is a little less straight forward, but once you wrap your nose around what you’re smelling, very, very enjoyable.

It reminds me of a video I saw on YouTube by The Tea Guru where he shows a piece of vintage mysore sandalwood and compares it to the wood of a big South-east Asian tree (I believe from Java). How replete the woods from these South-east Asian trees are with oil makes them just as “good” as the vintage mysores but, there is still a distinctive, unmistakable character that comes from the terroir that you can only get from a good vintage Mysore.

AlHindOud - Mysuru 2
This is my first sandalwood oil and compared to oud oil, sandalwood oil seems rather flat to me. It is a nice scent but sandalwood might not be for me OR I just have to get used to it.
It is not my intention to insult AlHindOud, as his oud oils are awesome!

It’s like comparing apples with oranges. If you are new to sandalwood, give it an independent wear and give oud a little break. You’ll start appreciating why people from centuries are enjoying this amazing nature’s gift. 🙂

I'm the same, I enjoy sandal but would never reach for it to wear neat.

The Tea Guru has some wonderful CREAMY Java's. I'm amazed at the bountiful plumbs of smoke.

I'm also enjoying the Kangiiten black meat Mysore story which is quite different. Floral, evolving into a gentle lapsang souchang tea that burns cade, dying with a slight bite of bitterness.

SULAYM's HM Mysore (rarely I wear this, and always neat as it is deserving of that, and I like to use it when I am getting a tad overwhelmed by Ouds).

This is a very nice, very RICH Mysore oil, throughout. It starts off not quiet, but not extremely loud either, but with a dominant creamy note with some butter and sweetness in there somewhere, after a good 15-25 mins, it livens up and becomes a strong, creamy, sweet AND buttery scent. As it develops into the heart, you get a nice few notes of powderiness, that comes and goes, and some very nice quiet, passing fruit notes, that turn into mainly a nice floral note that also comes and goes but is there quite regular, but also very quiet compared to some Oud florals (but also very nice and noticeable), sometimes I would also get powdery florals. On the base notes you get a nice sandalwood note (most of the wear the wood note is not a main note at all, it is always in the undertones hardly there) that smells kinda like crushed up biscoff biscuits on a cheese cake, as well as more powdery florals. As the dry down appears, you get a nice "clean" note, (I have said this about notes in ouds as well lol) that I can only describe as fresh, clean, linen, some of the florals come more dominant and more powdery as the powderiness is a dominating note here, and the woodiness is very apparent, but not in a way you'd think, it smells quite sweet and (the only way I can describe it and to my nose it is very similar) to a crumbled up box of biscoff biscuits on a cheesecake, with some of the creamy and buttery notes adding to that to make it feel like an real, biscoff cheesecake 🤯.

An amazing sandalwood!!!

Santal Royale. - Kyara Zen

This is a sandalwood spray sold by Kangiiten under the name Kyara Zen. I’ve heard some good things about Kyara Zen’s stuff so when this came around I had to make an order.

You get what you pay for. This isn’t an expensive spray. And you aren’t going to be mindblown by it but it does smell like sandalwood. A sweet and floral sandalwood. It kind of reminds me a bit of myrrh as well… especially on the opening. It gives you the sandalwood oil experience in a spray. Not too expensive. Can’t complain too much!

Tamil Nadu deg distilled single tree sandalwood I purchased from White Lotus in 2002. Somehow this shares the rich multilayered complexity of my old baieido granules (from about the same time coincidentally) heated on the subitism.

There is a mild maple-fenugreek like aroma that i never see these days... it may be a regional thing for Tamil Nadu but I haven't sampled enough oils from there to know for sure. It's a bit frustrating having fragmented / incomplete/ incorrect information and knowledge about things like this.

And when I step out into the air or into an open space for some reason it reminds me of the smell of fresh snow. There's a certain "petrichor" (?) associated with fresh snow falls it's a kind of dry woody powdery extremely pleasant scent. This particular oil has it in spades. I feel like this dry woody powdery sense is what Iso e super and "timbersilk" attempt to vaguely imitate

By the way those phenolic poly-cone caps are by far the best in my experience for keeping essential oils well preserved. Other plastics are not as capable of dealing with the unique characteristics of essential oils. I would transfer everything I have into these types of bottles if I could do so without too much waste.
