Here's a controversial take on this: any consumer falling for the Kinamic markerting has no one to blame but themselves. I don't think any vendor is out there to intentionally rip their customers off by telling them that they might as well buy this oil over actual Kinam wood. If anyone is such a newbie that they fall for this marketing, they should probably find a cheaper and more common hobby like fishing.
And sadly we see almost everyone falling for this by the way they describe their oils as Kinamic or “you must try this because it’s such a Kinamic mind buzz” and I’d say mind buzz is the second most overused phrase in the Oud world used to describe anything that remotely smells passable as Oud.

Only mindbuzz I’ve ever received was from actual low grade kyara. And that’s saying something because now that I’ve smelled it I will completely disregard any attempt by any vendor selling an oil saying it’s Kinamic.

It always comes down to trust and knowing your supplier with something as easily tampered with as oud! And I am 100% certain you do not need me to tell you that, but I'm saying it anyway.

I think it's a blessing that we have a community to throw around some of these adjectives and try to develop a mutual understanding so we can help direct each other towards the good stuff

I relate to Mr P’s response here.
When I describe an oil which is obviously not produced from genuine wild Kyara as ‘Kinamic’, I’m not suggesting the entire oil is indicative of true scent of Kyara, I’m simply suggesting it exhibits a facet of a Kyara profile. I believe it is a useful description, as some high grades of woods & oil can display this facet whilst simultaneously smelling like normal Agarwood. For me, it would be inaccurate to omit this finding. If I could describe the aroma without using the term ‘Kinamic’ I would, but it’s next to impossible. Most of us know what Kyara smells like, yet it’s so difficult to put into words.
Like Mr P mentioned, If I believed an oil or wood smelled exactly like Kyara, I would say “This smells exactly like purple oil Kyara from so & so”.

Although I don’t have as much experience with this wood type as many of you, I’ve heated both CK & wild Kyara on the sub a handful of times, the aroma profile is so distinctive, if you have an experienced nose, I don’t think it requires an extensive study to understand the basics of the profile & to be able to successfully reference it. Those of you who are dedicated collectors/users of Kyara might think of me as being foolish for this over simplification, however, for the purposes of a concise review, I understand exactly what is implied when the ‘Kinamic’ description is applied.
I don’t know if I agree with this. Smelling green kyara is so absolutely different from any oil I’ve ever smelled that the 3 times I’ve heated it now I get something different. I don’t think in good faith I could ever say an oil has a Kinamic facet because the whole thing holistically is just that utterly complex and special. I also don’t feel like CK is Kinamic at all. I just think it’s a sweet, honeyed vanillic wood and that’s it. But it doesn’t display any of the hallmarks of real Kinam. It just smells sweet and vanillic but lacks any of the complexity of real Kinam. I dunno for me I can’t see the similarities.

I agree with take as well.

better stop calling cultivated kinam cultivated kinam then lol apparently the whole industry is wrong and we are the ones who decide.

You're going to have to be thorough if you're going to police that adjective. 😉

Doesn't the term "Green Kyara" exist specifically to differentiate it from other things that might fall under the broad category of kinam?

Cultivated Kinam is cultivated Kinam. It’s not real Kinam. It can absolutely be called cultivated Kinam. I just wouldn’t use my CK experience to speak about a true Kinam/kyara experience.

For example I’m burning some 1970’s Shoyeido kyara at this very moment and I’m laughing at how little I actually know about this wood. I thought all the ultra high grade sinking cultivated Kinam I’ve purchased and heated gave me some kind of indicator that I would find in the real thing and my goodness no. This is something different altogether. I simply don’t feel I could pick up any oil in my collection and say I’m reminded of this piece of wood even if it shares commonality with Agarwood.

They are not the same, that's for sure.

Mind buzz means different thing to different vendors and to different consumers.

Kinamic , mind buzzing are terms used by myself and lot of people here and literally almost all vendors here .
So I can talk…

To me, mind buzzing effect is an emotional sensation, like euphoria…
Taha used it … like Kinamic words and he is trustworthy and a honest human Mashallah…
Do you think you are legit to require us, members and all the vendors here to not use Kinamic , Kinam , Mind buzzing etc ? ^^
Even if there is an oil Called Kinam, there is no issue with this …
And even if you try your best, I hope we will continue to use these terms as it help us to know what we are talking about cuz it’s longtime it’s used by our community.

When I say , it’s a beast , it isn’t in reality cuz it’s an oil and not any animal …
Métaphores and puns and clever words or not prohibited , and If I want to say kinamic it’s not a bad thing …
Bro you are a human with a name and surname … not a shadow casted in reality . You are using an other name than what and who you are in reality…
You should understand that there is no issue to put a différent name or words of what things are… if there is no bad intentions on it …
And you can’t saying vendors has bad intentions cuz you don’t know theirs heart … are you medium?

I can’t let saying guys who
experienced wild kinam since few days saying this kind of jugement… don’t put your blame on dear and kind members of ouddict who using this terms… you are not our teachers here

I want to remind you please, YOU used these terms lot of times… go back on your tons of reviews…
And you used « Kinamic » way before experienced any kinam bro so stay humble and don’t try to learn us how to write a good review please even more when you are one of us who used Kinamic terms etc …
I use to staying back in these controversial thread but I don’t like Injustice .
Peace brother we are here to sharing nice things … if it’s not your intention, then fight with yourself not us please bro 😇

I totally know I’ve used these terms and I will no longer use them in the future. Like I’ve said many times I thought I knew what all of this stuff meant and now I realize I know nothing. But one thing I do know is that nothing I’ve smelled comes close to Kinam. That’s all. Call things what you want. I’m not singling you out or even referencing you so I hope you’re not taking offense or thinking I’m attacking you.

I’m not attacking anyone. I’m not fighting anyone. So please don’t see it as that. I simply am tired of paying lots of money for oils that are labeled as ultra Kinamic mind buzz and being let down because of the over use of the phrase by just about everyone.

I don’t think any injustice has been done towards anyone. So let’s not make this into a controversy because I’m talking about what these terms mean and how I feel they shouldn’t be used lightly.

If you dislike me now for talking about this fine. I can’t make you like me. I haven’t insulted you or any member on here. I have never claimed to be a medium. I have no issues with anyone using any words or names they like. Literally NO ISSUE. I’m not going around telling people to stop saying things. I’m not harassing anyone. I don’t think it’s fair for you to say I’m creating an injustice and being mean spirited.

One last thing I would like to say about this matter and then I’m done with it.

I don’t think I or ANYONE should have to think the same way as anyone else or agree with everything that everyone says or does in order to be a part of the community. Being in a hive mind isn’t cool and the moment you have beliefs on Oud or opinions on words that other people feel strongly about suddenly you’re seen as an enemy. That isn’t fair. If that means I should leave this community so be it. There’s no point in taking part of any group that demands we all think the same. If I’ve said anything in this entire thread that was harmful to any member feel free to point it out.

Kynam called and told me it’s appalled

😜 Relax! It’s all educational the dialogue and discussion. 💪🏼

But seriously. Kynam is pissed.

I think it's all good but the nature of this topic predictably is one that leads to a little bit of tension, especially with the way some folks in the conversation were characterizing the intent of people using terms that have ambiguous meanings (deliberately to mislead) and also the implication that a group of people are using a term that they have found helpful for describing certain things, in ignorance. Even if it's partly true, you know it's going to rub someone the wrong way.

I don't think it's worth making an exit because there's a predictable reaction to a controversial topic but you have to do what makes you comfortable. I think this place is better with your contributions regardless of whether they stir things up or not for whatever that's worth. I've seen too many of these communities wither

No doubt both of these terms are overused but I have actually gotten a mild buzz from some oud oils.

I don’t think it’s usually the ones that are advertised that way but it may have happened a once or twice.

I immediately thought of this thread when posting my thoughts on some wood I just heated and I used the word "perfume" to descibe one of the notes. This then made me think...what perfume? What is a generic perfume which smells like this wood..? There isn't any and yet as with "kinamic" it is also a common word to decribe a note.

I understand this but in my mind it’s more of an adjective; “perfumey”.

That obviously doesn’t refer to any particular perfume and it could be very easily misinterpreted, but it still somehow makes sense to me.

Lol, this is the same reason I abandoned my kynam quest thread from last year.

For some reason kyara/kynam is a triggerfest for some people, usually those with minimal to no depth of experience with the material. It’s not long before the thread becomes emotional or degrading to personal attacks 😂
