I wasn't patient enough to wait on this order since I didn't have a good estimate on when the product would ship but I can at least commend them on their polite and prompt e-mail support and their painless refund process.

As far as I can tell from this thread and their site, they even offer refunds to people who receive and aren't happy with their product. This is a more generous return policy than what you'll find elsewhere.

That whole conversation confuses me…

Distilled ambergris?
Dissolved in oil prior to distillation?
Then put into a carrier oil like sweet almond?

Were you trying to order ambergris infused massage oil here or what?

It was a unique listing for a customer with some experience in purchasing ambergris. I asked more about it on Instagram (posted below) and then followed up over e-mail.

[Ouddict.com] A Call To All "the Perfumist" Customers

In any case, the listing is still online.

Are you saying you wanted something bad enough to spend but not wait for? I just looked at the listing they claim if you buy it and it is not the best ambergris you ever tried they will refund ok. Sounds amazing. So kind! Then why can't I get a sample of it? If you are so KIND but not kind enough for tiny samples then what lye's behind this kindness. I even asked them if i can get .01g sample and it was a negative reply LOL I feel bad for my previous comments about the perfumist because I should just respect the policy they wish to serve but I just feel as if there is something not right about the whole picture but I do believe they created oils for kings on another planet!

You always lose a little bit of oil when decanting samples. I assumed that the calculated loss for decanting samples was weighed against the loss of accepting refunds and they selected their policies appropriately. This also avoids the annoyance of customers who only buy samples which I imagine provide weaker margins.

As for not willing to wait but willing to pay ... I need at least a good estimate if I'm going to wait. I've had sellers suggest that it would ship in 2 weeks or in 1 month and that was enough for me to be patient. The word "soon" was ambiguous enough that I wasn't willing to wait any longer. I could have asked for more clarity but I was starved for time and it seemed like a better idea to request a refund and move on.

From what I have learned here on the forum, if you decant with the glass swipe thing you don't lose any. You call it annoyance to be able to provide a sample of your products and then your customers not liking it? samples can be a bit more expensive and for a good reason! If an oil is 500$ at 3g then a .1ml should be 25usd and not 16.60usd that the 3g/500$ suggests.
Are we talking about where the applicator forms a sort of bridge that the oil moves across?

Some of these "zero loss" methods require additional time or a steady hand. They're great for our use cases but might not translate well to larger amounts or decanting multiple bottles.

For the annoyance ... I didn't mean that some customers might not like it but there are actually customers who only buy samples and don't buy full bottles no matter how much they enjoy the product. The way this phenomenon was explained to me (by an experienced reseller) was that they would purchase samples of every single release for years just to keep a variety at hand, but never purchased a full-size bottle and presumably, they never intended to. I can understand the psychology that would turn a customer into a samples-only buyer and I can also understand how that could frustrate a seller.

I am just as confused as @Mr.P , if what has been shared is the discussion regarding this product and then for a customer 'with some experience in purchasing ambergris' those two sets of information don't support each other. One party has no clue...

Distilling pressed oils like almond, jojoba or coconut turns on alarm bells.

Isn’t the guy’s name Steve?

When Steve starts telling you he’s a 300 year old Arabian company making fragrances for royalty ... ask him how rubbing elbows with the Creed’s is going 🙄

Edit : rereading some old messages in this thread. Apparently it’s Alex. Alex in Texas. Perfumer to Kings. I guess everything really IS bigger in Texas - including the Tall Tales.

PS - aside from this latest post about “Distilled Ambergris Oil”, which made no sense - did anyone see the equally perplexing post about Saffron oil?

Posts - and email responses as posted above - lead one to believe he has no idea what he’s talking about. Fool the general public, sure. But folks here know more than the general public and see through the shenanigans.

What kills me is - using synthetics is the modus operendi for most fragrance companies. No shame in it if that’s what their products are and if that is indeed how they make their products. It’s literally 99% of the industry. However- when claiming to be all natural, when obviously not - that ticks people off.

Alex, Steve, or whoever you are - just embrace it. Stop the fabricated stories, acknowledge that they are bulk synthetic generic fragrances, and stop pawning them off as ancient naturals. It’s obvious to everyone here.

And in being honest about it - nobody will be pissed off about it because they’d no longer be being misled and feeling cheated.

My 2 Cents

I made some comments here and I deleted. I just realized I prefer to stay away from whatever it is that I do not know 100% for sure about. So in the case of this perfumer retailer, I have never tried their products so I feel that the people who have should be the ones talking. Since I have never tried or sampled I should not have part in anything including satire. Regardless of my suspicions, I should not feed a certain bias. I guess that is what it was that made me feel a certain way, looking down on my self and not realizing why since I had no hate for this person just because I did not agree with their policy. I am also a person who is hard headed, meaning even when someone tells me not to do something I sometimes do it to clear up my own suspicions. After all, I could name a couple products in a field that I have much experience in that people were raving about that are complete BS. But that is also another topic that I would not spend energy building drama on.

I bought 3 of their perfumes siberian musk 1001 nights and the Cambodian Oudh spent £381 all together. They are the worst perfume oils I have ever smelled and obviously cheap quality. I tried getting a refund through pay pal however the case got closed. Which is very annoying knowing that they are just out there scamming other people. £400, a weeks wages down the drain as I’m definitely throwing them away.

Yes, sadly I have read much about this person/company in a thread going back some years that can still be found here.
Extremely disappointed for you brother @HamzaAli

Doesn't that guy claim he will give back 2x the money or something like that? Did you show paypal this?

No I didn’t I’ll go check their website properly
I just checked. Looks like he took it down. I didn't check too much into it, but I remember his claims that if the things he sells isnt the best or what he claims that he will refund 2x the amount one paid. what a circus clown.
