Was recently shopping on Elixir Attar, when I stumbled across Spirit of the Hellenic Republic. As a Greek guy, I simply couldn't resist and ordered a 3 gram vial.
In short, it's a wonderful and very interesting chypre that cuts to the heart of the Mediterranean concept that formed the basis of this family of scents. Where the original Coty Chypre (Cyprus) used cistus as its resinous material, Ahmed and co. added a Greek spin by using mastic instead. Mastic is a bit of a difficult to define material for me, being kind of musky, pine-y, and sweet all at once. Spirit of the Hellenic Republic takes these characteristics and builds an accord for each. Citruses and rose, which play a sweetly soapy contrast to the green and musky accords. Tarragon, ylang-ylang, and oakmoss are a sweet and bitter green accord that blends beautifully with the coniferous notes in mastic. Finally, indole and leathery notes from jasmine, sambac, champaca, and osmanthus play well with the sweetness of the mastic and ambergris in the base notes. As the scent dries down, the ambergris becomes a bit more prominent, and contributes a cooling ocean breeze to the composition. I find it a great unisex scent that really captures the essence of both the beautiful flowers, and the bitter green evergreens and olive groves of the Greek islands. I'm a very happy customer!
