Orient Attar from Hikayat Perfumes. Sweet tobacco, crassna and vanilla vibes. I think this is an upcoming attar as I received a sample with my last order. But they don't reply to my queries. I will definitely be picking up a bottle of this if it becomes available.

I'm wearing the Dynamic Duo! Ajmal's Mukhallat Danh Al Oudh Moattaq spry perfume with 2 generous swipes of Mukhallat Dahn al Oudh Moattaq CPO. If you are not familiar, the spray is Ajmal's signature denh al oudh/bulgarian rose, oudh dominant, the CPO is really gorgeous 18ml of Bulgarian rose and a touch of the same oud, Rose dominant. Together it's pure bliss, it radiates a good 3' around me for 3-5 hours, then lays lower but for the $ hard to not just love Ajmal for keeping it so real and affordable. 2 largest bottles on right, spray froward, cpo rear.

yan huang zisun from elixir

the opening is an absolute blast of camphor and frankincense with an incredibly resinous woody deep cedar, it reminds me of how saunas smell a little bit, because the wood smells so rich and moist, with bright essential oils like eucalyptus normally becoming embedded in the wood over time

for the first 1.5 hours or so, incredibly the top camphorous qualities stay, this really does evoke the sharpness of smelling fresh powdered snow and there is a hint of deep spices that meld with the cedar in the initial phase.

in the mid phase when this snowy camphor does finally recede it is replaced more fully by the spices, maybe some anise and fenugreek? someone referenced chinese 5 spice and i can totally see that but it doesn’t feel particularly culinary, almost incense-y but not quite. it evokes an image of being in an antique wooded shrine with bags of ancient spices and incense. it’s a really beautiful drydown to my nose.

it will definitely take a while to pick the details apart in this one but it’s a great success, like nothing else in my collection which is something i value highly

@slater With this scent I imagine the movie Spirited Away. My favorite part is the wood used. It is super dense and fragrant. Smells like you are in an old building, like the bathhouse from the movie. Then the super minty camphor would smell like the bathhouse water used. I have never been to a bath house but I imagine the bath water would be minty, clean, and slightly medical.

[Ouddict.com] Attar/Mukhallat of the Day

Ruh Juhi from White Lotus. This is a wild one… I haven’t smelled this oil from different suppliers, so I have no way to judge its merits compared to other similar oils.

Not sure how to describe this. Intensely sweet, no indole at all, some gardenia like aspects, fresh smelling, tropical, “bright” like sambac but does not smell like sambac. Nothing subtle about this oil, and it definitely is different from the samples of solvent extracted juhi I have smelled.

tuberose ballard by elixir attar first wearing here. i have actually hated tuberose every other time i tried it. it usually smells overtly feminine, strongly tropical and also like bubbalicious and super fatty to me. i would never have tried this if i wasn’t on the subscription but i am a fan

it is definitely a soliflare and i only smell what i imagine is a truer tuberose. it is white and also a bit stemmy and green. it has an almost subtle near mentholic top note, it is also kind of softly floral creamy like a bit of ghee (not at all like sandalwood). it does have a warmth that reminds me of the other tuberoses that i have smelled before, but this is much more subtle and not so… annoyingly vivacious

this is really like have a microscope on a soft velvety creamy flower, it has the same effect as smelling a delicate white flower up close. it does not feel exaggerated at all or amped up and there is no base of sandalwood or otherwise to pick up. it’s a very relaxing floral scent with tons of nuance. well worth the price of admission if you are fond of florals.

rising phoenix hindu homme. this one is quite nice, it has a lot of the qualities of man musk but in a composition i like much more. the bracing herbaceous lavender is the dominant note and it’s a really unique take on a fougere as well as one of the few lavender dominant compositions in my collection.

anyone know any other lavender heavy mukhallats or attars/perfumes?

i find it’s often more of a background note than a central accord, there’s bogue mem but i don’t like that one much

Fenugreek absolute for the last couple of days. This stuff is amazing but a little bit challenging. It settles into a wonderful warm curry note that reminds me of some of my favorite incense from Shoyeido. The top note is roasted and espresso like and totally hides the sweetness that emerges a few minutes later. Useful in an attar I think. The amazing thing is that curry note lasts an incredibly long time - you will smell it the next day for sure if you apply some in the afternoon.

The toasted / roasted top note is unfortunate on its own but it might be really interesting in combination with an oud.

RBO's Bangladesh vetiver, distilled in 2020.

it aged beautifully.
when it was young, it had a quite rough earthy note but that settled down.
what's left here is freshly cut grass, moss, dew, and moist fertile earth.

it really worth stashing away some vetiver for aging.

Fenugreek! It’s the secret sauce to the shoyeido incense mixtures I’ve been trying to figure out for many years here. I tried so many combinations of star anise, clove, haisoko, rei-ryoko, kunroku, cinnamon, benzoin… but the one thing I never tried was fenugreek oil.

I feel like I did my laundry in a concentrate of shoyeido tenpyo or one of their incense road sticks. All of these are rich in the warm fenugreek curry-like note. I applied some dabs of fenugreek absolute yesterday and this morning along with some oud oil and the result is really striking.

Ajmal AA musk gazelle I acquired many years back. This stuff is wild - so potent that the unopened bottles really are too much so I have it double bagged and in a metal tea tin.

I got a speck on my skin and it is radiating sweet musk grain top notes along with other elements - I smell castoreum and have no idea what else is in it. If this does not contain any actual musk, it’s actually a pretty amazing blend. it is a challenging scent and I recall folks having mixed reactions back in the basenotes oud forum days.

Sultan’s Grade Green Hojari Frankincense essential oil from Apothecary’s Garden. Very clear and clean. This stuff actually lasts on my skin all day. Rare for a frankincense oil to last more than 8 hours in my experience.
Sounds great! Another good one with amazing base/dry down: Ejayb’s hojari / cultivated kinam codistillation.

I have been picking up samples of frankincense oils for the last 32 years and this particular oil gets the “single best frankincense oil”, with the closest runner up being a distant second.

The kinam scent is not apparent when you apply the oil - just smells like a nice juicy fresh hojari oil. Very sweet, balanced, the specific frankincense notes are not swamped by strong pine or turpentine or other notes I usually find greatly exaggerated in some frankincense oil. So right off the bat the top notes and heart are just very well balanced.

where it really shines is how it eventually settles on the skin - it is a perfect facsimile of the most charming aspects of frankincense as I see it, and this is the first oil that really exhibits these notes.

The kinam seems to act as a kind of fixative and modifier in the best way.

what, I don’t know is how much of this is due to the resin that was used, the techniques of distillation, versus the addition of the kinam.

This is the only frankincense oil that I would actually wear consistently if I had enough of it. My second and third place frankincense oils are extractions and not distillates. Generally prefer the extracts.
