Sampling some @Faizal_p perfumes, Nilam Santal at the moment. This is some wild stuff - I smell things that bring carrot seed, camphor, ambrette seed, a trace of patchouli and of course sandalwood to mind. This is warm, musky, and woody and goes through some distinct changes as it dries down. It has both recognizable parts and some seamless accords buried in there which means it is interesting and engaging to smell! I have worn it once on skin and smelled it twice on paper so I am just getting to know it here but it seems like a quality product that's for sure. The musk note seems to swell as the perfume settles on skin revealing a very satisfying musky woody base accord.

Have you tried Violet Animale? I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on that as well. Though I haven't tried Nilam Santal, Violet Animale strikes me as similarly creative. It's very different from anything I've (half-) smelled before, and very beautiful.

As for Oud Florale, I only bought a gram of Oud Florale to start with and just msg'ed Faizal that I'd like another. It's that good.

I have the Santal, the Ghaliya and Kinam Elixir.

The ghaliya is a treat - i'll have to spray it again before I try to describe it here. The kinam elixir is also quite distinctive - cedary, ambery, and I think I'm getting a fair amount of ambergris as well or something like it. Pleasant dry down that has something that reminds me a bit of iso e super. This could be from the cedar but I know that Faizal is taking a hybrid approach to perfuming (skewing very heavily to naturals of course) and is using just a touch of some aroma chemicals to fine-tune these, so it could be that what I'm smelling is just a hint of iso. The effect is very pleasant.

sotd was Kishmir II by @An Najwa
spicy cola note with creamy Ambergris drydown. Even if you have Kishmir I, this one is different and personally I like it even more. I would recommend this even though you have the first version.

for now im wearing Khaltat Baghdad and Damascus after a while.

Khaltat Baghdad - beginning with amber-coated peach and apricot with addition of several roses and drying down to a saffron, ambergris and oudy base

Damascus - green, rosy, tea-like, fruity what else to say? 😃

[Ouddict.com] Attar/Mukhallat of the Day

Picked up a couple bottles of old cologne from the market today.
These specific colognes had several uses during the last century. People would sometimes drink them (which is a very bad idea). They’d be used in traditional “Marash” or sprinkler, the sprinkler would be filled with one or both of these colognes along with rose water, and used to freshen up after eating seafood, the hands would be sprinkled with the perfume after washing them.
A third use is in bukhoor, these colognes along with many, many other aromatic oils would be blended with powdered oud, or sandalwood, along with whatever is available or depending on a family recipe.

Today I mixed it (the one on the left) with Indian ruh gulab to try it out, 3 drops Ruh gulab and 27 drops Pompeii. It smells quite nice, lots of florals already so the ruh gulab gets lost, it’s powdery, fresh, and overall nice. I bet it would smell much better with ambergris and an extra dose of patchouli, it already has patchouli in it but it’s faint.

The Oud Lab - Purple Haze 🌼💜

This is exactly like I imagined it would smell. A tinge of musk and oceanic notes with florals emanating from this magical blend. I don't know much about flowers but I'm getting a lot of jasmine sambac without the indole and what you get is an amazing concoction of jasmine, musk, ambergris, licorice and possibly some Borneo/Sri Lankan type oud that pierces the nostrils and invigorates me with that purple haze! Such a fitting name for this scent.

Alright so I got a sample of AL bayt Al Ateeq 2 from ASO and after coming back from work today I swiped on my wrist. MashAllah! Sublime! to the core. Sacred to the core. Noble! Sophisticated, respectable of high degreee. In a Class of its own! Takes you deep into self reflection. Very emotional feeling. This attar is something you don’t want to wear to impress or enjoy. This is for reflection! Meditation, silent moments, silent prayers. Hope I will get a bottle of this inshAllah! Its expensive but I will see.
MashaAllah very accurate feelings and experience description

immersed in several swipes to really appreciate the ambergris in the drydown. im lucky to have smelled this sandalwood clean, with musk, and with ambergris so im able to tell how the additives play out. this stuff is dripping in awesomeness.

mesOUD’s attars are mind blowingly good. I have SOROOR and I smell it from the dipstick atleast 20 times a day every day. There is a very slight sweetness to that gamey animalic musk and this combination is so well balanced it drives my mind crazy. There is this oceanic saltiness as well that comes at the end of the whiff. So it starts off sligtly sweet and then gamey musky and then suddenly saltiness. addictive

Violet animale is a very intriguing attar. I love it. Did post up a little review on my insta a few days ago. Very well balanced.

Would you mind either sharing it over here or sharing your Instagram handle? I’d love to read it. Apologies if you’d rather keep your worlds apart 😉

Here you go. I’m fragdoctor over there as well🙂

That’s absolutely lovely ❤️ What a touching memory. It’s lovely that Violet Animale brought that back for you.

The attar is so smooth. Maybe Faizal should have named it Violet Pussycat 🤭

Wonderful video and gorgeous Insta page Doctor saab, I really loved your photography and aesthetic!

It's so strange how differently scent is perceived! I smelled the perfume version of this attar and I immediate messaged Faizal saying something like, "it'd be a dangerous fragrance on a woman!" No doubt the attar and perfume are different beasts due to concentration and reworking necessary. However there's a sultry quality about the perfume that I just couldn't shake off, the feeling white floral compositions often exhibit. It must be the combination of the civet and violet, but also the cucumber note, which you'd think would bring the down the sophistication of a blend, but not here!

A distractingly beautiful fragrance, with the ability to captivate everyone around you, wield with caution!

I haven't tried the perfume but I completely agree with you. I've told Faizal that a man who wears the attar would have women all over him. It's the civet, I think. Not positive, as this is the first fragrance I've tried with civet in it. But it's very powerful, deceptively so 😆

@Mr.P Have you much experience with civet, Mr.P? What are your thoughts? I did buy some from Apothecary's Garden but the package just arrived. What about castoreum? Does it have similar effects? I forget to buy it, but have just put in a second order.

Hello @SophMarie !

I have not really engaged with any of the animal extracts beyond collecting specimens for reference / research and very basic layering experiments! fascinating materials of course...

Castoreum is neat stuff - very much reminds me of oud and I can smell the birch, willow and poplar that make up the diet of the beaver. It can have a kind of phenolic / medicinal note that is appealing. A recent sample that I got is kind of nauseating if it's too intense though… There's a body odor type aroma that sits beneath the phenolic notes that turns my stomach.

The civet i have is kind of "cheesy" - not appealing to me, but I understand that traces of it can exalt certain florals, and I have certainly noticed the influence of civet and artificial civet in perfumes and incense over the years.

I think the castoreum is worth getting at least to sample because it's so distinctive.
