I stop burning more than one month after my sickness I advice every one use Agarwood burning just one time in week or tow weeks or burn it away from you inside locker or far room ...
Hi Mandeel,
Sorry to hear about the sickness due to the burning. Please be aware that it is just not safe to sniff burning wood of any kind inside a confined space or in the open air. The issue is not directly relevant to the space but to the chemicals you sniff. Of course, you will have suffocation issues if you do not have enough fresh air supply in a confined space. Generally, any wood has water, extractives (in this case, Oudh resin), hemicellulose, cellulose, lignin and some ashes. We intend to sniff extractives in general which contain our heavenly fragrance. When you burn wood, you mainly burn hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin. When you burn wood, the hemicellulose, cellulose, and lignin of wood undergo internal chemical changes, and some of those chemicals are so harmful that you may have headaches, dizziness, and so forth at short exposure. At long and regular exposure, one can even get cancer. Fortunately, as most of the extractives are volatile at low temperatures, you could avoid burning hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin into harmful chemicals and yet enjoy what you are after from your valuable piece of wood.
In the past, I did some experiments with pine wood thermo-gravimetric conversion in the absence of air. Pinewood and Aquilaria fall into the same softwood category. I found that, under 120 degrees centigrade temperature, most of the volatile extractives would be given off from the wood. If the softwood is continued to be heated, from 200C along with extractives, some of the hemicelluloses will start to break down and evaporate. If it is continued to be heated, even at 400C, all of the extractives would not be coming out from the core of the chips straightway. But by the time most of the hemicellulose, cellulose, and lignin will break down and evaporate out from the chips. So, you would get mixed of everything at 400C temperature. But to get out all of the heavy extractives from wood, most of which are waxes, the temperature needed to rise to 600C. But in the presence of air, wood chips will start to smoke at 300C.
So, if you wish to keep yourself healthwise safe and still would like to enjoy the Oudh fragrance, I guess you need to find a temperature safe between 120C to 220C. You can use a temperature-controlled hot plate to find an optimal temperature. In the optimal condition, at first, the low volatile fragrance will come off. Then if you wait long enough, the heavy resinous fragrant like agarospirol would come out slowly from Oudh chips due to its volatile nature and increased porosity of wood created by previous water and low volatile extractives evaporation. You can give a couple of trails and see the optimal thermal condition to enjoy the essence best without actually burning it. All the best!
