Agar Aromas, 20 year Nha Trang oil. Antique store vibe, lots of old mellow leather, color = brown, tobacco. Very consistent aged vibe - not really any auxillery notes, just lots of wood. If asking wet or dry, I'd say it's a wet brown vibe. Very robust, with long duration, but also mellow in a way. It's not high pitched at all - just super calm, confident, secure. Like a gentle confidence.

Can you summarize / generalize about your experience with Lao oud oil? I have only one Lao oil - from the old Bolisat Lao PDR distiller - it is an outlier in my collection and nothing else is quite like it.

I get a sense that Lao region agarwood has primarily a Crassna vibe, displaying fruits, but no jam, while the florals are Chinese and Malaysian.

There is always a good oudiness and some psychoactive factor, with an interesting progression that leads to a decent drydown.

The flaw in my analysis, is that I have tried
only 5 decent Laotian ouds.

For today.....IO Super Hoi An
A preferred oud equation:
good raw materials+good distillation=good oil

Ameenah Imperial Senesis
Amazing drydown, smells like high quality Chinese agarwood chips

Aroha Kush

At first swipe....a very fleeting pyrethrin note😱
Then this oil toys with my mind...
I start to think about a cool misty morning stroll through the garden, passion fruit drink in hand,
with sliced nectarines.
After the fantastical trip, the heart notes are solid
Cambodi.........
but you gotta take it all in before the sillage shuts down😀

You know what I noticed the other night. My sample of pailin from RPP I had gotten to the end of and filled with a little alcohol. When I wore it yesterday I noticed that when diluted it shares the exact same vibe as aroha kush. In it's actual state it's a far superior oil. Funny how I've come full circle though because when I first got that oil (it was my first Oud oil EVER) 4 months ago, I had a post here where I said I hated it because it smelled like gasoline lol. Now I can't smell that at all.

As time goes on...you will possess a “seasoned” nose which will help filter some notes, and amplify others.

Oil smell often changes radically when just a residue remains. I find oils that were very different when they were new smell almost the same when they are just a residue that is highly oxidized.

Late afternoon now....
package arrived........
so I’m filling up my arms and hands with swipes.
10 swipes!! To be exact.
Move over Sproaty, because aside from the 10 swipes, I’m burning 3 different incense and heating 6 different woods. (My room is heaven right now)
More about the wood in the Burn Thread......

So I’ve got 6 Hainanese oil samples
a Brunei, a Kedah, a Lawas, and a rose.
😕

All the Hainan oils have a nice “wear them as a fragrance” value, but when you dig deep as an abid ouddict would, you will come up short on depth and complexity. Ooooooo, one of them has a strong bovine barn! Kicks good butt😛 if you know what I mean😀 but not rotten smell.

The Kedah and Lawas oils are interesting, but don’t even catch my attention...pass........

The rose is from RK Sons India, I like it!
nice pretty smelling rose.

The show stopper is the Brunei. It reminds me of the top notes in Agar Aura Berkilau and Ayu, the profile being closer to Ayu. It has a powerful opening, but as it dries, it is light/less dense than the Agar Aura oils, and by drydown is far less oudy. It is however, a bit incensy, so I’m sure it wasn’t a white wood distillation.
I don’t know where my buddy got these, and even if I can share the information. Time will tell.
