Just got Feel-Oud's Old School Malazi. In the bottle, the oil looks deep black like the paint on Adam's graphic for this oil . . . but on the stick, the actual color is a dark green with a brown cast. Awesome.
The aroma starts with that gingery-lemony overlay that fresh oils sometimes have. I suspect this note will dissipate with a little age. For now, it diminishes in about an hour. I find Adam's description of the scent very accurate. The oil has definite spiciness -- I was thinking clove and cardamom, the website says cinnamon, which sounds right. There's a dried fruit note; it's like dried fruit skin, not sweet or juicy. There is also bit of woody sweetness. When I breathe deep I do get that hearty wild oudiness that I hope for from a peninsular Malaysian, and the suggestion of leather . . . I haven't sorted it all out yet.
I am very pleased with this oil, especially given its price. I plan to experiment with aging and blending. I hope with time the fragrance will become darker and more leathery or earthy-smelling, and that the oudiness will become heavier. I honestly have no idea but I look forward to finding out!
I was intending to split a bottle among several people, but purchased the bottle before arranging for all of the participants because I didn't want to miss out. Glad I did because Malazi sold out fast. But this means I have several grams more than I need. If anyone wants to obtain some, feel free to contact me. 🙂
