[Ouddict.com] Oud Wood

one of the largest piece I have from Irian, Indonesia.

Edo Period, according to kodo master back then entire tree were brought via Vietnamese ship to nagasaki.
The quality of the kinam (kyara) oil extracted during the 18th century (the Edo period in Japan and the Nguyen Dynasty in Vietnam) is indeed impressive. Although kinam has been harvested for about 50 years now, it is challenging to achieve the same quantity and quality as during that time.
This piece is green kinam, harvested about 40 years ago.

^lovely piece.
Its indeed impressive, i seen many pieces from different eras with different formations, oil level, resin etc, The most important thing is the aroma, you can see less oiley etc pieces ranked higher than highly oily/resined ones, wood is mystery.
Here another top ranked Kyara pieces from that era "Infinite Autumn"

I agree with this. I believe I will have many opportunities and time to experience, learn more, and build a collection of ancient kyara samples like you have, such as the samples in the 61kinds collection, for example.

I really like the samples you shared, and as you said, I also believe that the most important thing is the scent. Many samples have beautiful forms and appearances, but the scent does not match or is not good

Thanks brother, i just use small light box "sadly its suck for certain angles have to get better one"
True that, 1000% better than shots I take from my Iphone.
I use brother camera for most and sometimes i use iphone for certain things.

I hope so! i mean this one of main reasons i still buy its experience, else i have more than enough.
However the wood keep surprise me, was it Kyara, Rakoku, Managa, Manaban etc.
Getting names pieces is easy, Famous incense is ummm way harder, lots of titles doesn't match real wood.
in some kodo notes it was mentioned that there are several conditions that must be met in order for a fragrant wood to be hailed as a famous incense.
At the very least, not emitting any unnecessary aromas other than the five tastes (spicy, sweet, sour, salty, and bitter) is an important element related to the dignity of a fragrant wood.
However, there is one extremely rare exception. This is something special other than the five tastes, its a dream like scent in extremely rare quantity of the wood and it only show up at right temperature in blink of an eye.
The Japanese system may look like its simple, however its really complex and have lots of depth, if not studied under head of school or master one would miss most of it.
What we see on the internet is just peel of it, was it wood or information "which is many misleading in some ways or another" while it have some truth it there is way more to it than that.
Example the manaban in rikkokugomi system describe the common people, and most describe its notes as salty "smell like stuffy salty taste to a dull sour taste which is in some books "peasant smell".
However if you smell some old ones with different schools view they similar properties to that of Kyara, its knockout smell! refreshing, gentle, sweet and unique luster.
Ah man how i wish i can visit Kyukyodo, they have so many top kyaras i want some of lol=/

Love this post.
