Mysore King, Craftoud. Wow, a menthol/camphoric open, beautiful woody profile and potent, great for another super hot day.

Santal Silani 1 today. It has settled down beautifully and is performing very well at 85F. I’ve been wearing a lot of sandalwood oil this summer.
That is my Sandalwood oil of the day as well! And it's yours! 😆
Indeed an gooorgeous aroma and performs well! Beautiful stuff buddy as all your offerings! Never got something bad from you alhamdulilah!

Not sandalwood oil, but sandalwood anyway.

I got these years ago from a vendor called Oudhasi if I recall. Two unopened boxes, and two billets from a couple I opened when I first got them.

I’m wondering if I should just keep those boxes sealed up and if that will eventually make them some kind of collectible. The two pieces I have taken out will take me a long time to go through.

These are rounded like a log but actually just splits from a larger log shaped into cylinders. Smell is actually quite wonderful.

Oh, snap! I just smelled a sample of the one log sandalwood. First impression is that this is really really really nice oil. Right off the bat there is this sweetness that’s not quite like maple and not quite like fenugreek, but with a soft warm sweetness that surrounds the deep sandalwood buzz. It’s a little premature to post a review because I haven’t smelled more than 10 minutes of this evolving on my skin but based on those 10 minutes this has top notes that are reminiscent of my older deg distilled oils when they were fresh. The only other distillate that this brings to mind is this Tamil Nadu single tree oil that I’ve probably written too much about here already… the one that was distilled in degs supervised by a scholar for the purposes of getting a baseline for the highest quality oil.

Anyway, my first impression is, for the second time in 25 years, buy as much of this is you can afford.

I’m not a shill, I speak my mind or keep quiet. again, I still need to see how it performs over a longer time frame, but holy cow. It is so nice to see something like this still being made. You will NEVER find this in the big batches of government steam distilled oil, I don’t think you can make this with high-pressure steam distillation, regardless of the wood. I could be wrong... This requires long, low temperature, ambient pressure distillation to produce I am convinced.

oops - This is Not a Post

Just tried a swipe of the One Log from @EJayB OleFaktory. It is indeed a superb oil. There’s something in high quality Sandalwood oils I own which are all similar, and that’s the way they morph and change on skin. There’s quite a few which stay very one dimensional but this one changes quite a lot—a genuine scent progression. More thorough review upcoming soon. Really nice first impression.

Sumba imperial - Rising Phoenix

I tend to be more into oud oils but I recently became curious about sandalwood oils. So I placed an order with JK to try 1 gram of 3 of his sandalwoods. In the order, he shipped a tiny sample of the sumba imperial.

Sniffing straight from the applicator I was immediately intrigued. This oil is simply in a class of its own. It is noticeably more potent than any other sandalwood oil I have smelled including an oil made from 70s mysore sandalwood.

The oil itself is a brown colour and is a little more viscous than a regular sandalwood.

On the first sniff a blast of sweet, nutty praline goodness fills your nostrils. A few moments later you can begin to pick out some individual notes, brown sugar, butter, nuttiness, some subtle spiciness It almost reminds me of rum but without the alcoholic astringency sort of like when you’re cooking with rum and the alcohol has been evaporated off. A little more time passes and I begin to get something… purple floral? in there as well. Something dense and sweet but fresh and overall very attractive. You definitely get that tropical indonesian air just as you do with JK’s ouds from the south pacific.

This stuff also projects! Others could easily smell it on me in the car “I like whatever you’re wearing today” which is not always something I hear when I am wearing ouds haha. After a few hours this freshness begins to unfold, and from out of this blooms some nice mellow santalols that hum just above the skin with a butteriness more reminiscent of other santalum album oils. Really nice experience. I wish I was a little more experienced with sandalwood because I feel I’m not able to capture in words just how much different and, in my opinion, better this is than other high-end sandalwood oils.

Bottle number 8 is all mine and I’m so happy to own a full quarter-tola of this stuff!

I had a good swipe of mesoud sandalwood mysore. Definitely legit sandalwood, smells great from top to bottom.

I will add that to my nose there was some a distinct woody nuance to the heart note that was very appealing - some particular aspect of the wood that was concentrated nicely in this oil and gives it a little bit of its own character.

That’s a wild oil, isn’t it?? I have smelled one other “Royal Hawaiian” several years ago and it smelled exactly like a generic Vanuatu oil. This specimen is much more complex and definitely has a very distinct personality. It reminds me of Helichrysum oil.

A swipe of old mysore i got from Liberty Natural back before they moved out of Portland to their lavender farm. Got this in the late 90’s - maybe I put on a drop every couple of months. This is one fantastic oil and very much a testament to the quality that used to exist. There is a certain well rounded fuzzy sweetness to these.

Interestingly, this one has not degraded or become more generic over time at all. Seems like it’s kind of doubled down on the cozy fuzz.

also smells like it was not steam distilled, but I can’t be sure that. It has that broad complex musky woody fuzz that so otherwise i have only smelled in oils that came out of degs or slow hydrodistillarion.

One thing I remember is 1997/1998 or so was about the time that things kind of switched over to the current version of “Mysore Sandalwood” (legit government oil plantation grown steam distilled I mean) and more Tamil Nadu profile oil in shops. Liberty continued to sell authentic sandalwood, but never had that same deep rich oil like they had previously so the difference could be the raw materials and it may be this was what the steam distilled government oil used to be like.

My guess is plantation oils and other regions replacing those from wild populations in the supply stream. I wonder if that was the time of any new regulations or something like that in India?

I don’t know if other people had the same experience as I did, and I viewed all this just as a strict consumer, without any insight into the industry for quite a while before I tuned in

Swipe of an Rksons budget sandalwood oil i picked up a while back. I have several batches and two of them have some notes that i don’t particularly love - one has a “rubbery” opening and the other is a faintly floral type of sandalwood that has a slight acetic note suggesting it has aged in the presence of oxygen - I find all sandlwood goes this way as it combines with oxygen. Atlas cedar does this as well…

I applied the latter acetic type yesterday evening and in spite of its imperfections the base of this oil is amazing and I am sitting here 18+ hours later and my arms smell like a jar of fine sandalwood. Unusually appealing, dry, cool sandalwood sheen that I adore

ok this is a bit off topic but i figure it’s worth sharing:

Scientists found a way to make pure santalol by fermentation. I’m guessing they genetically transform some kind of yeast or bacterium.

The price is great compared to santalol isolated from Sandalwood or high santalol sandalwood oils, and apparently the smell is excellent.

I’m going to order some and will report back here of course. In terms of tinkering with fragrance and especially making attars, the idea of being able to buy a whole bunch of inexpensive pure santalol is very appealing.

Now I need to hire some ninjas to smuggle out a Petri dish with a culture of whatever microbe they developed so I can grow my own. 🙂

[update: sample ordered - maybe this belongs in the “anticipation/ inbound shipment” thread?]
