I put a couple of inexpensive RKSons sandalwood oil on a blotter a while back along with some other oils just to try to tune in to some of the nuances I miss when wearing them on skin.

Both of these oils had some slight distracting qualities in the top notes that had me mentally devaluing them more than I should have. But man do they perform in the base department. When I smell these on a blotter there's absolutely no doubt that they are fundamentally solid sandalwood. Would do well in a complex blend where the subtleties of the top notes would be drowned out anyway.

What do you look for when evaluating good quality Sandalwood Oil?

In this case I was talking about a persistent tangible santalol presence on a blotter many days after applying. On skin this translates to phenomena like applying a nice swipe in the late evening and waking up the next morning glowing with sandalwood aroma. Or applying a swipe in the morning, commuting to work, working all day, forgetting about the sandalwood, then stepping out into fresh air afterwards and it comes back into focus - clear powdery dry woody long lasting tail.

There are other things that appeal to my nose in terms of complexity in the top notes and particular nuances that I hope to find. Maple, fenugreek, musk, animalic / urine notes - similarity to fine wood on subitism.

Eden Botanical Plantation EO (Santalum Album-Grown in Australia) Lot #6

Has a typical Creamy and woody Sandalwood vibe which is overshadowed by a terpenic, Elemi or Frankincense top note which lends an uplifting effect. Calm; focused state of mind when used for meditation and worked well mixed into cream for eczema inflamed skin.

Eden Botanicals Royal Hawaiian EO (Santalum Paniculatum-Grown in Hawaii) Lot #18

Very Sweet with floral undertone, similar to Gardenia or Jasmine, and creamy, woody Sandalwood backbone. Diffusivity of oil is quite impressive and much stronger than Plantation EO. Tenacity is excellent, with floral nuances slowly fading around the 4 hour mark, it progressively becomes smooth and buttery with some of the best features of Plantation EO.

P.s. Platation EO applied before sleep was easily discernible on skin 12+ hrs later

If I want to sample vintage-style mysore sandalwood oils, where would folks recommend starting? There are so many vendors and descriptions.
An Najwa has had some bangers!

Pretty sure those vintage ones he had are long gone. Worth hitting him up though as you never know?
Thank you, I should've said he is a person who has been able to turn them up with some regularity so I assume we may see more! 🙂

MesOud NTT Batch III (1/12/24)

Small amount swiped to fingertip, tapped together than dabbed on inner elbow crease and third eye. Decent diffusivity for such a small amount applied. Very smooth, Creamy and very buttery which encouraged deep breaths to explore its extraordinary depth. Buzzing behind Third Eye is quite noticeable, encourages quiet contemplation and I feel it has some peaceful wisdom to bestow upon the user. This is an oil to be honored and respected. What was I saying …Just guided into a daydream state😉

"urine notes"

This is not what I look for in my sandalwood 🤣

This is kind of like saying barnyard or musky or something like that- I actually hesitated between that and saying "pheromonal" but that term actually has no specific fragrance meaning so I made my choice. 😂

The quality I'm referring to is actually a really fine musky note and is part of the bouquet of good Sandalwood both chips on the burner and oil!

Kangiiten - Special Reserve Mysore. This oil is nice. Lactonic and creamy in all the right ways but it has zero projection. It's a weird oil. Whether on my skin or the collar of a shirt it just sits there, barely noticeable. Why would this be the case? No other sandalwood I own behaves this way. It's like it has a weak spirit or something.

I sort of guessed "musky". Thank you for taking that in the spirit intended. After I posted, I wondered if it came across as mean? Am I getting mean? Please tell me if so!! The truth is, I'm just jealous of all your fine noses 😉

Last night I put @mesOUD NTT Sandalwood batch 1 on my left wrist and @An Najwa Damascus on my right. I could smell almost nothing 😧

Not mean in the least - the impression you create is of a supportive and optimistic person.

I wonder if your nose is maxed out on sandalwood right now? That happens to me sometimes and I have to take a break so I can fall in love with it all over again. I opened a fresh bottle of NTT yesterday and was surprised at how strong it was. I didn’t remember it being so bright, floral and aggressive.
