I wonder if your nose is maxed out on sandalwood right now? That happens to me sometimes and I have to take a break so I can fall in love with it all over again. I opened a fresh bottle of NTT yesterday and was surprised at how strong it was. I didn’t remember it being so bright, floral and aggressive.
It's a sinus infection and congestion problem. I have noticed that sandalwood is the first scent I lose, whether it's a sandalwood oil or a note in a perfume. It's saddens me because sandalwood is one of my great loves.

I wasn't surprised not to smell much of the NTT, but to smell so little of the Damascus was really telling.

Oh so sorry. I forgot about your sinus infection. I had a cold that I’m over but still have lingering congestion in the background. I used a netti pot once for a sinus infection and made it so much worse that full on OxyContin barely put a dent in the pain and I had I to get on really strong antibiotics to get rid of it so I fear getting another and fully sympathize.

WOW! I'm sorry to hear that! I do medicated nasal rinses (similar) at least once a day. They're about the only thing that helps.

Kangiiten - Special Reserve Mysore. This oil is nice. Lactonic and creamy in all the right ways but it has zero projection. It's a weird oil. Whether on my skin or the collar of a shirt it just sits there, barely noticeable. Why would this be the case? No other sandalwood I own behaves this way. It's like it has a weak spirit or something.
I have the same oil. I find that some of the higher santalol Mysore oils are just that, quiet, tight and close. Smooth operators, if you will. I also note that if I use sandalwood every day, it's easy to not notice it in the background and become acclimated. Some time off and it's very much more present and able to appreciate. Joy in moderation!

Yes, some sinus infections can be debilitating. I once went to ER at 0500 and was in terrible pain from sinus and ear. I rarely take ill, but when I do, I am ill!

I get that for sure. The thing is though, I don't often reach for sandalwood...well not as often as oud anyway, like once every couple of weeks and this Special Reserve one I haven't opened for many months! It was my understanding from the vague story that was written about on the original listing that it was "potentially" a very old sandalwood, which could mean anything really. It's a bit of a dud for me.

The Kangiiten plain Mysore was also a dud. Dull and flat with no projection. I ended up doctoring mine with other sandalwoods from Rising Phoenix and others, and a bit of the Mesoud ambergris maceration and I have to say its shaping up to be my new favorite. Loud and effusive with a deep, burnt sugar back note. If it were still available and cheaper I would buy it as a carrier oil for other more expensive sandalwoods.

Actually, that's not a bad idea because it's not going to improve on it's own. I just said a similar thing to Mr P regarding lack luster ouds that nothing really should go to waste if you're into blending so I should heed my own advice here. I have some nice 1g samples of sandalwoods that I could extend with this one as well as add it to blends to fill out somewhat.

Habzoud - Ramah
What a beautiful sandalwood. Definitely among the better ones I tried.
Buttery but with a slightly piercing freshness to it that is very enjoyable.

Pretty keen to try his sample set of sandalwoods actually. Think this is the first time I've read of someone else having smelled some.
I would encourage that.
I also really enjoyed Fawz. IMO that one is really suitable for mixing. I put a few drops of merauke oud (al shareef's) in it and they work so well together.

I have this weird relationship with my RKSons sandalwood oils. I was going to say "love-hate" but that's not right. They are strange fish. I think I paid just a little over two dollars a gram for these oils, and as a result they go in my "suspicious" category and I tend not to blend with them, but I keep being pleasantly surprised when I apply a swipe. Fundamentally of decent quality based on the heart and dry down in fact but always something just a little bit distracting in the top notes. One batch has a slight rubbery smell, another feels like it is infused with some light mineral mix in some way I can't put into words. A third has that lily narcotic floral note that I have smelled in oils at a significantly higher price point, and the fourth has that woody-musk facet that sometimes shows up in good oils. To my nose the musky one has the most satisfying overall profile and the least distracting top notes.

The rubbery, musky, and floral facets are all notes I have experienced from the wood itself although in the RKSons oils at times they feel like they "stick out" a bit as opposed to being a part of an integrated Sandalwood aroma. The "mineral" type aroma does not match any woods I have burned and I wonder if this is some byproduct of some unusual soil or maybe an oil that has been adulterated.

Applied a couple of swipes of this @An Najwa sandalwood - vintage mysore, SQ oil, 1990's.

I have written about this one before - it has a very unusual scent compared to the other Mysore woods I have smelled. That classic Indian sandalwood aroma is there, but there is an unusual soft complex sweetness - it isn't exactly floral, but it is more floral than anything else. No idea how to describe it and I would love to know what your reaction is to this oil just because it has a pretty unusual profile. As I had mentioned there was a time in the 90s were retail Mysore oil really was quite different from oil from Tamil Nadu and other areas, to my nose this has some of that same aroma but it's been a long time...

Olefaktory steam distilled sandalwood? Anyone tried this? He told me he always has a steam distilled one and does hydro on occasion when he gets older, better wood. The price is so good and everything else he does is held in such high regard on here. I’ve seen reference to what must be his hydro distilled sandals n here and they seem great. But a causal search through the archives I haven’t seen anyone talk about his steam distilled. I really want an everyday wear type of sandalwood. One that I can wear guiltlessly knowing I can get more.

Mysore Royale by Mr Umair- Tabeer Oud
Sandalwood Oil (Fresh) by Dr Prasun-Craft Oud

So far as Sandal oil goes, both guys have done such a remarkable job that I didn't/ don't feel even a minutest wave of need to see somewhere else for Sandal oil.

I think you will not regret purchasing anything from Olefaktory. The steam distilled specimens that I have a sample of were excellent.

this stuff came out like glue today. never knew sandalwood could be sooo thick! and the smell is as thick as it looks. its camphorus and clean and lightly buttery. florals and orange citrus in the dry down. id venture a guess this was copper distilled. glorious.
