Fwakher - Husn AlShmookh

Strong musk, powerful fecal Jasmine, buttery and glistening ambergris, and oud. The strength of this mix is unmatched by many attars and blends I have. Feels really concentrated. But is very delightful. Wearing this as the Sultan of Oman is in Jeddah (or was, can’t be sure).

SQ Al Hoot from Oudique.

I haven't seen this one mentioned on here yet. The cinnamon and vanilla come on strong at the beginning. But then a dusty, golden incense also appears and a kind of blonde, sweet leather.

I'm reminded of the very first ambergris tincture I purchased on Etsy many years ago. I somehow expected more from it and was thrown off by the amber as opposed to ambergris. That's not to say there's no ambergris in the SQ, just that there's probably a lot more going on. It smells like a vintage perfume. I need to ruminate on what to layer this with. Overall, I think I might prefer this slightly over Multazam.

Maysam AlWard AlTaifi - National Day 96 Blend

This is an amazing blend of Cambodi and Sumbawa Ouds. With Taif Rose oil and a touch of basil oil. The proportions are just perfect. I get the smoothness and deep woodiness of the Ouds along with silky touches of the Taifi rose, and the hint of spiciness and lush, light herbal greenness of the basil. Basil is one of my favorite ingredients in both cookery and perfumery because of its seemingly calming effects on me and great aroma. It marries well with the Taifi rose. Absolutely beautiful blend.

AlMishal Oud - Phantom

The ingredients:

- Rare Laosi Oud 2014
- Rare Malay SQ Oud
- Rare Royal Tarakan Oud
- Rare Malinau 94 Oud
- Filipino Tjouri Oud
- Filipino Deset Oud
- Ceylani Special cooked Oud
- White Ambergris
- HJ Jebreen
- HJ Oudh Imperial
- HJ Muscat

The Review:

This is such a delightful blend it’s on the level of Bourhan Oud. Initially, I didn’t think that AlMishal Oud could pull off executing such an amazing blend but I was wrong. It smells sweet yet it doesn’t drown out the Oud. Both exist in perfect balance. It’s like polished leather with a balsamic sweetness. I’m getting notes of vanilla, geranium, and patchouli with the oud on top. Not one particular oud stands out. It smells woody, floral, saccharine, and forest-y. It’s good enough to go with something bitter also. But not required like the last ones I had from AlMishal. Very beautiful blend.

Bourhan Oud - Kehailan

Back to where it all started with Bourhan Oud. A wonder melange of oud, Henry Jacques and Amouage oils. The ingredients are:

- Trat Hatab Oud

- Brunei Oud

- Ceylani special brew Oud

- Iriani gold Oud

- SQ royal ambergris

- 4 bottles of Amouage oil

- 3 mini bottles of Amouage oils (Rose, Sandalwood, Luban)

- 2 Henry Jacques Royal Turquoise cabinet (Kenny and Lyali Ibri)

It has the dark, muddy, and earthy notes of oud whilst the high-pitched notes of the French oils are giving off notes of sherry and fine liquors. It’s nutty, sweet, and bursting with cognac soaked cherry 🍒 aroma. Very beautiful.

The Oud Trader - Garden of Spring v2

This attar contains:

Irani Rose Otto - 2 types
Bulgarian Rose Abs 2018
Mysore Sandalwood EO 2017
Frankincense Papyfera Heart EO
Green Mandarin EO
Cultivated Kyara CO2
Orris Germanica CO2
Black Ambergris Abs
Yamada Matsu highest grade borneol camphor

He brought this out for me when he saw I loved it. The first thing that hits is the rose and the sweetness of green mandarin. It smells fresh, bright, and clean. Then I’m getting the creamy, buttery Mysore SW. the frankincense feels woody and citrusy. This is a very beautiful attar with good performance.

Scent Talks - King Solomon (Redolence) [sample]

This is one of the few Scent Talks blends that didn’t appeal to me that much. Although it has some top notch ingredients like Madagascan vanilla, Jasmine Grandiflorum, Taif rose, and Mysore. I feel the cocoa resin, coffee robusta, and especially the castoreum overpower everything. There’s a type of animalic scent from the castoreum that’s different than musk and civet. It has to be used sparingly in my books. All in all, it’s not to my taste. But I can see how it appeals to others.

Fwakher's SQ Rose Oud.

Very obviously a Hindi oud rose. Beautiful. It's quite similar to Areej le Doré's Beauty and the Beast. I can swear I even smell some cocoa nuances.

Edit: Also trying hours later the SQ Royal Gazelle VIP. This is like a typical synthetic black musk but done very well. Google Translate (it's been fun reading and learning this way, about "paints") says it has an ambery-menthol flavor, and I agree. Very old school in scent profile. I'm thinking this needs to be layered to exalt a more natural oud or give some old school stature to more playful and artisanal perfumes.

dont know if this is the right place to ask this. thoughts on this statement?:

'When Jacques Guerlain created Shalimar, he gave birth to the very first amber fragrance in the history of perfumery.'

In western perfumery, or alcohol based as the caveat, but I think that's generally correct?

A musk maceration I did a year ago and forgot about (thank god)
New Caledonian sandalwood and Siberian musk.
If I ever macerate musk in any other sandalwood then send a hitman after me.
This is by far the best sandalwood I’ve used for musk, it give you exactly the scent of musk, nothing on top of it except for a faint spicy dry wood. Nothing like mysore’s heavy cloud. You get the almost electric top notes of Siberian musk, like you’re smelling a pod from up close, the hair, the leather, the floral powdery musk, a little sweetness underneath, a tiny bit of ghee note in the drydown. Gorgeous.
