Mesoud VietKing 😍

I have a couple of precious drops of this amazing elixir. I am revisiting this after a long gap and I can smell the changes just over a short period of time - the fresh crassna wildness is rearranging itself into a beautiful deep chewy resinous syrup. This is just a brief reflection after applying a little dab, but this seriously beautiful stuff. What will something like this be like in 10 years??

I hope mesoud is saving half of these runs to release aged versions at some point just to provide benchmarks of what aged high quality oud should smell like for future ouddicts pursuing the higher end of this hobby!
This makes me even more excited for mine , I have a .25 arriving tmm. Enjoy every last drop bro !

Habzoud - Cambodi Smoke (Batch# 1)

Very bitter and medicinal opening with the smokey character dancing in the background. I was surprised to have tried this after a long time. The smokey signature is now even better, it feels much more smooth. In the air, as you move your wrist, you will get this bitter-sweet, smoky, and resinous-musky aura.

To my surprise, this actually reminds me of Grand Emperor of Koh Kong from Jinkoh Store (retails for $500/gram). 🙂

mesOUD - Trat Classic

Here we go, my first swipe from the sample set sent over by Mehmet. Decided to start with some of the Thailand Ouds to try to narrow down some regions specific notes if I can. Trat Classic seemed like the obvious first choice to get a overall feeling of the Thai Crassna profile.

On the opening there’s a clear soaked/fermented smell to me, nothing overwhelming. It’s this chocolaty bittersweet honey type opening that’s feels like it’s bubbling off your skin. Has a barnyard type note that leans leathery and smoky, not downright fecal but certainly approaching it.

As it dries down the barnyard aspects die down drastically, allowing this gorgeous dusty medicinal leather type accord to shine. Little bit of a bitter citrus like an orange zest in the background too. So far this oil is extremely loud, projecting off the skin hard and filling up my head with warm oudy goodness. Can’t wait to compare this beauty to the other Trats and Crassnas in the set.

Now here's something beautiful. I am pacing myself and working through these very slowly. The Royal Laos i already mentioned - an intense bright, forward, fermented note and strong zinging musky woody medicinal presence that dries down to a deep bittersweet accord that I absolutely associate with Lao oud. What a wild take on crassna that is.

Now i am examining the HM Royal Cambodi (Pursat, 1980's). I've smelled a couple of other pursat oils and this is a very interesting addition. It shares the same full sweet candlylike space as the other pursats, but has a little bit more tooth in the top notes which has me thinking this might have been given a tad of soaking / fermentation before distillation but that's a guess and it doesn't smell cheesy just like the opening is a little more complex and multi layered. i smell notes that bring sweet cassie, marzipan, and violet flower to mind as well. I also think I'm getting something slightly rooty, akin to orris maybe?

Definitely a most pleasing crassna and I look forward to hearing other people's impressions especially the folks here who have been pursuing fine crassna like languagescent pursues kyara.

I smelled that not too long ago. First thing that comes to mind is chocolatey top notes. A unique kind of chocolatiness as well, in a different sense than malinau choco-mint type

Yes wasn’t minty at all to me. Kind of like a Hindi oud chocolate I’d get in Russian Oud II or Oud Zhen, but more leathery and smoky/leather, less overall cloying sweet.

mesOUD - Thai Classic🇹🇭

Briefly I want to go back to my first Oud oil from the sample set, Trat Classic. I noticed that Trat opened up much more sweet and felt more oily in the smell compared to Thai Classic. It felt more like the chocolate was bubbling off your skin with how sickly loud it was. Trat also had a very similar drydown to Grand Emperor Hue from Jinkoh Store, a warm reddish shade of woods, slightly smoky and sweet. I’m wondering if that’s also a Crassna species oil.

Thai Classic on the other hand, opened uo with much of the same fermented/soaked smoky and leathery. As Thai Classic dries down it becomes much a dustier type of barnyard smell to me. Old smelling, like walking into a long untouched closet in some backrooms of a zoo. Kind of like an untreated leather, or how’d I imagine a leather hide would smell freshly skinned and currently getting treated with urine.

With all that being said it’s still very lovely, a complex and rich scent that is quite challenging, but that’s the fun of it for me. Wearing something clean smelling all the time doesn’t excite me, I like to be fermented, soaked, and rolling around in the mud at the barnyard sometimes. I prefer the slightly more bittersweet and less fermented nuances of the Trat Classic, but Thai Classic is an oil worth trying if you want old school Thai fermented funky oud goodness.

mesOUD - Trat Sweet

Swiping the second of three Trat samples from Mehmet this morning. Saving Trat Borei for last as I’ve read it’s quite a unique one from the region.

This oil opens up with none of those soaked/fermented notes I experience in Trat Classic or Thai Classic. Instead there’s this dusty apricot jam mixed with a resinous wood shaving/pencil shaving note. Much rounder and sweeter than the previous Thais. There’s this honey like sweetness in the background too but it doesn’t feel too syrupy. I find that as it sits on the skin that dusty/old/mothball like note I’m note a big fan off starts to die down and the fruity tart sweetness of the apricot starts to shine brighter. This could be like a pseudo-osmanthus/apricot type note to me, as it’s changing in its character as I smell it.

Further along I notice a clove spice note coming out with the sweet apricot. Very similar to the Borneo Qi from Jinkoh Store. Not nearly as potent as in Jinkohs offering, and blending very nicely with the fresh sweetness of the apricot.

On the late drydown of this the sweetness and fruitiness is more of a wisp in the breeze, slightly spicy clove is now getting eaten up by an old furniture scent. Something akin to walking into an antique shop full of old wooden chairs, tables, drawers, and old Persian rugs hanging from the ceiling. Combining with that very familiar liquor red, woody cherry crassna drydown. Very meditative in the last hours of wear for me.

A much more wearable and easy-going take on the region to me, very delicious oil.

Absolutely outstanding Thailand A. crassna oil.

Notes are crazy with this one so I just CANT list them all, or it would take me possibly hours (thinking back to what notes where there or not, I am 2.5 hours in) and lots of reading, so I will try and make it short.

Notes start off with a summers day in a hot and humid land were it has just rained, a nice CLEAN, petrichor scent, with lovely sweet red berries, and other sweet (red) fruits, and some mild citrus, with an equal partnership of some sour red cherries, with a lovely resinous note that has a little incense-y vibe to it, as it develops the notes soften and become more well rounded with soft sweet red fruits of all kind, and the sour cherry, then 30 mins later you get notes of different coloured and scented fruits altogether (while the red fruits and cherries are still very much active), with what I can only describe as potentially sweet/sour guava and grapefruit, and other tropical fruits, such as a sweetish to sour tamarind... as it develops (1 to 1.5 hours in) more the red fruits take a back seat, although still there, become much more subdued but will pop their head in randomly every now and then (this includes the red berry and sour cherry, btw I love these notes in crassna's), the majority of the notes now are sweet (slightly sour) tropical fruits, with a powdery, wet-ish, powdery white and sky blue florals on a bright summers day (again) after raining (more petrichor note), and the feeling this gives me is of lovely wet florals in a floral garden with tons of different florals for acres and acres, and notes of dripping, syrupy, relaxingly sweet pure mountain honey, and what I came to realise is that this is a very clean oil, not much earthy, "dirtiness", just purely clean. After another 30 - 45 mins, a subtle soft minty note (more subtle than my other 3 crassna's that I have) comes into play, and gets stronger and stronger and goes away and comes back etc in and out, and the florals are still here to party, and the (non red) tropical fruits are still here but they start to dwindle (fast) BACK into the red berry and sour red cherry, in and out, with the beautiful florals, mint and rainbow vibes of the petrichor. As it develops more you get a mixture of the sweet red berry and sour cherry and mash them into a dessert that is very creamy (but sour) and gourmand, for a very short period of time, then here I am... about 3 hours in and it is becoming woody (incense, where before it was resinous type incense), powdery florals back, and the subtle soft mint comes back more subtle again, but still around. EDIT: 3 hours and 15mins in and I am getting a strong, minty, petrichor scent, lovely wet dripping black/red resin, relaxing sweet, beautiful florals, powdery... oh this is a great oil, just when you think its over, it comes back 😂😂😂... kinda like what happens in The Godfather 3, drags you back in when you thought you were done.

All in all, my first impression of this oil is 10/10. GREAT OIL!!!
