EO Bhutan red for the night - this feels like a brother to Hindi oud when I am standing in the centre of this oud with red leathery tones and as I move to the periphery I feel like I’m walking parallel to the Chinese territory as I get the slight medicinal feel. Good one !

I definitely got a fizzy cola, lemon lime note in the opening when the fruity tropical scent was still there.

You’re right! I’m not sure if my earlier fragrance was masking the scent but an hour or so after swiping I don’t get any of that. I think that woody scent had me mistaking it for a cigarette tobacco, and even then it smelled more like a faint glimpse of it coming of a smokers leather jacket. Now it’s settled down to me as a damp smell with maybe some mothballs and old dusty closet.

Take it with a grain of salt as the morning fragrance could certainly be affecting my perception of this oil
Totally, I loved your description all the same!

It might’ve even been like a sprite or 7-up type cola. But this oil definitely needs a clean arm and mind when swiping. I’ll leave a real review after I’ve studied this oil better. Will say regardless of the exact notes it’s really really good
The reason I say lemon/lime is because to me it actually gives me a Ramune note. Which is technically a lemon lime soda but also different!

I used to drink those all the time, I’ve cut out soda and sugary drinks though so the flavor and smell of a famine escapes me. But I can definitely see what you mean. There’s this fizzy pop sparkly citrus that plays with the more hi-chew like candy guava notes. I might just have to grab a Ramune from the H-mart nearby for a refresher though

Totally, for people who don't know the drink "sparkling citrus" is a good descriptor. Emphasis on the sparkling

Sulaym - Taiba (Thailand 2023) - Just happened upon my bottle, took a sniff, thought to myself, this doesn't smell like how I remember it smelling, and took a swipe. Something incredible's taken place!!

Wore it several times during Ramadan, but couldn't quite vibe with it. I knew the brothers at Sulaym would not give the name Taiba to an oil lightly, there were hints of something special in the mid and base, but the top was really lacking, and underwhelming. Today I understand! Whoever has a bottle, take a swipe at your earlier convenience, to my nose, it's turned into a cross between a ultra clean Hindi and a light herbal Chinese! Those water-y notes with hints of citrus peels surrounded by green leaves, and freshly snapped twigs, sometimes coming across almost golden like the Sun.

Astounding really, because this sort of profile isn't easily acquired, at least from what I know, a careful distillation needs to be undertaken. These summertime cologne type profiles are some of my favorites because just how subversive they seem when compared to the mainstream concept of oud. One of the best parts of collecting, but also purchasing from vendors with that sort of insight to see what an oud can turn into, long before it's even reached that stage. Bravo Sulaym!

This is one of my treasures...

Mesoud Tarakan Qadeem... not sure if this is the only microcarpa oud I own. as far as I know it's the only Tarakan I have. I am comparing to some kalimantan and malinau oils and they have some similarities but I'm not sure if they are also from microcarpa. Many of the oils I learned from didn't come with scientific names.

Gotta try his Sarawak Ateeq , another Microcarpa it's so damn good !

mesOUD - Trat Borai

After reading many positive reviews on this oil the last couple of days, I was very excited to swipe this one. Prepared my palette by trying the 2 other Trats and the Thai Classic in the sample set first.

To begin Trat Borai has a very similar semi soaked/fermented funky note that I got from Trat Sweet. Nothing unpleasant as always from Mehmet and not as strong of a fermented note as Thai Classic or Trat Classic. A sour cream funky cheese note begins to play out simultaneously wit a dusty/waxy peach. I almost thought I made a mistake and swiped Trat Sweet again with how similar the opening was to me.

It’s after this oil begins to warm up that it starts to differ from the others to me. More sour tamarind with a slightly citrusy/yellow floral/honey undertone. Very slight, and definitely dominated by this syrupy red woody/apricot funk, but I notice it briefly poking out.

I thought y’all were crazy when I read that there’s a petrichor cool breeze component to this oil. Off the vial and the first portion of this oil it’s so funky semi-soaked goodness that I couldn’t imagine what you guys were smelling. It’s only now later into the lifespan of this oil that I see the light.

The ripe/overripe tropical jammy fruit and semi-soaked funky cheese and sour cream notes of this oil die down dramatically. No longer are they screaming in your face and bouncing off your skin, now, a cooling earthy woody aroma has entered the fray along with it. Smells of the breeze running through the leaves of a tropical forest as the dewdrops drip to the ground after a fresh downpour. It’s fleeting, and if you focus too long on the scent the crassna sour jam starts to come out clearer. Taking your nose a bit further back from your skin and your transported to the woody jungles, with a crisp invigorating breeze bringing the wonderful aromas of the earth to you.

The deeper drydown is dominated by the now oh so familiar crassna woody red scent mixed slightly oily leather smell similar to the other Thai crassnas I’ve tried. There’s little hints of a dry tobacco, hay, earthy dust. All coming together with that slightly moist woody scent. All in all a banger oil, and probably my favorite of the samples I’ve tried so far.

Wow, it is amazing how people smell things so differently. I never got any cheesy funky notes, AT. ALL. Haha. It was a very clean, fresh oil to me.

Glad you enjoyed it!!!

I have a feeling I haven’t fully discovered the depths and nuances of that one fully yet. I heard it would be good to swipe it with Koh Chang for a compare and contrast session.

sometimes those fermentation notes can be kind of subtle and I've also believe that I've become desensitized to them with repeated wearing. The first time I wore the lightly fermented(?) "sweet trat" from pureoudh my daughter who loves oud thought it was the most rank rotten smell. At the time I somewhat agreed but felt the rot smell was mild enough to overlook. Now that oil smells like nectar to me. which is somewhat confusing. Did it change or did I? Did I acquire a taste? Is my olfactory system desensitized from repeated exposure? I can still clearly identify the fact that it's fermented but it doesn't smell like rotten waterlogged wood and cheese.

Anecdotally, even just in the last 2 months of picking up this hobby, I’ve found that my tolerance for the acetone high pitched wood varnish and the soaked/fermented barnyard notes have already increased. It’s getting easier with every wear to look past those to find a deeper smell behind the oud. Does that mean it’s less objective of an opinion now that my scents is biased from past experiences? I’m not sure. I do think you need to build up a scent database and tolerance to certain common scents in oud to be able to differentiate them more clearly.

Your Olfactory (receptors) system changes every 1-2 months btw. So you can actually train your nose, it is 100% true when people say this.

EDIT: I can actually smell and TASTE florals in Gray Goose vodka. I experienced that a few nights ago when out with my best mate with our food.
